No denying TAS version is Great. For The Batman, design wise it does suck, but his mannerism and dialogue makes up for it. Visually, Gotham's portrayal is good too, but the drama with his dual personality and his ego/confidence in Season 4 didn't really help, and Season 5 was just disappointing. I prefer his Arkham City look over his Knight look. Sure the latter was unique, but reducing Eddie to a mere mechanic feels like they hurt his image as a genius. Telltale's portrayal and look was cool. Shame it didn't last.

Riddler not being able to accept that Bruce was Batman at the end of Arkham Knight made me laugh. He couldn't handle that his theory of Batman being a criminal who robbed from the criminals he caught and bribed Gordon to look the other way was proven wrong so he deluded himself into believing that Bruce Wayne being Batman was a trick to make him look stupid.
Gorshin should also be credited with designing the Riddler's suit-jacket look as an alternative to the body-suit. A look that has obviously caught on and I believe helped the character be taken more seriously later.

You shouldn't feel bad about putting something from a video game on a high spot. Video Games are a very valid art form along with film. Just because something is from a game rather than a movie or show shouldn't deduct praise or appreciation from that thing. I have to agree, that the Arkham Riddler is my favorite, but next to the TAS interpretation.

This is my new favorite channel. As someone who grew up on BTAS and couldn't afford many comics as a kid, plus now doesn't have time to keep up with everything batman, your whole channel is a gift. Thanks a bunch:) btw I think I'll watch those Arkham games after I get my fill on rewatching BTAS :)

Like I was saying in the other section, oh man, this is the kind of videos that make me want to pester you about picking up *Gotham* where you left it ^^ Ed Nygma is one of the best characters of the show, and my favorite live action Riddler. Cory Michael Smith was amazing. - In the Arkham games, we got 3 solid takes on him in different times of his "career". Sure, the Arkham Knight "riddle-races" sucked, but the character was still cool IMO. I'm glad you ranked it so high. -No mention of the *Batman: Telltale* Riddler? He was also very interesting. Not as playful/zany as Jim Carrey's version (that I don't dislike, actually), but it's hammered by Catwoman that he only recently became much colder and vicious, that he used to be a man that still had a code, some honor or whatever, and wouldn't just torture people for fun. I liked how they went with him for the boss/leader of the bat-rogues gang, and it felt way more believable than in the DC Rebirth "War of Jokes and Riddles" Batman arc. Plus, I love his design in this one, his hood + mask reminds me a bit of the ones Oliver wears in *Arrow* , and his iconic cane is put to good use. Sober but efficient. - About *The Batman* , I feel you, when it came out I was a kid raised on TAS, and I had a huge problem with both Joker & Riddler chara-design (among others, but they were the big 2). It's only a few years back that I actually looked past their terrible (IMHO) styles, and really appreciated that TV show for what it is. That's really too bad that these great shows only got a couple Nygma-centric episodes each... - On that topic; *Justice League Action* is a lot of fun, and that episode was indeed awesome, I really wish we got more... I had assumed that Nygma was bald in this one because they got inspired by his TNAB look, (which was another re-design that felt like a cheaper off-brand version of TAS) in which he doesn't have hair. (Quick note: I also enjoyed Nygma in "Young Justice", but it's been a long time since I've watched the episodes he was in... I remember liking him though, nice design and all...) Pardon me, Mr Wickman, but it's been over a year, and we really need more in this series. Plus, I really think you need to do this for Two Face, as you've very rarely shown your "preferred Two Face". Also, if you ask me, Telltale did an amazing Two Face, yet you've barely mentioned him. Harvey is very likeable, and Two Face is downright psychotic in the game. I think what turns him insane is a bit weak, but aside from that, it is a perfect Two Face. Travis Willingham does a very great performance as Harvey, and shows the dichotomy of the character very well. I admit, it isn't as good as Mr. Eckert (yours, not Nolan's), but I think it is almost as good as TAS, and certainly worth a review. I've been watching your channel from the start, and I am almost as obsessed with the character as you. I think you will be pleased. P.S.: Just in case, you don't need to actually play the game. I like to think that the in-game reason behind his look in Arkham Knight is in the first Riddler tape he asks Scarecrow when his plan will happen so he can "coincidently" plan his on the same day, but Scarecrow's plan was happening much sooner than Edward thought so rushed his plan. This could be the reason his bat killing mech looks more clunky and made of scrap than the other things he made as well as the hasty question mark paint job. The Hawiian shirt and cargo pants could be his work outfit and the classic suit and bowler could be what he wanted to wear but didn't have the time so just made himself look presentable by buttoning it up and doing his hair.
The fact that you still included the batman version of Riddler just shows that you should never underestimate a character based on their looks. The Batman write a better Riddler than TAS and that is given all feat. Now, if we can only get a proper portrayal of Riddler on the big screen (No Jim Carrey please).

I think JLAction did the best job, even if it was just for one episode. I am refering to 2 specific moments in that episode: 1. "He's stealing my act!!!" That shows the Riddler pride for his gimmik. He is the Riddler!! Nobody else must leave riddles to Batman!! He confronts the Joker just for that. 2. The moment when he can't stop himself and just solves the riddle Joker proposed to him. It's supposed to be funny, but is also so accurate. The Riddler can't run from a challenge. In a way, it reminds me of "Riddler reformed", but it was even More accurate, this time.
It's a testament to the influence of the sixties show that it keeps showing up on these lists. Pretty excellent list here Rogues. My picks for the best versions of the Riddler are more or less the exact same.
Frank Gorshin is what made The Riddler Great! He gave us a genius mad man with delusions of grander ! He elevated the one shot character; from the Early Batman story to arch villain status! Without him to blase the trail; The Riddler would have been forgotten...
Hi there. I am bit disappointed that Jim Carrey 's Riddler wasn't featured on this list and neither was Cory Michael Smith ( as he is #1to me ) but I'm glad you put my 3 favourite Riddlers on there. John Glover from BTAS, Frank Gorshin from the 60s tv show and Wally Wingert from the Arkham game series. I look forward to seeing Two Face in the next video.

I know that the TAS version would be number one, but you did a list with Mr. Freeze, would George Sanders' version be on it? He was the (prototype) TAS version before TAS.
If it makes you feel better about putting a video game version in the number one spot, just think video games are just another mediums to tell stories. With the growing popularity of video games in the mainstream, they can and have provided a very unique way of storytelling. :)
The Batman TAS version in the episode Riddlers Reform is perfect for me. Not so much his appearances in the prior episodes where he's all about video games.
A lot of villains got redesigns in Arkham Knight and I feel Riddler's is the only one that worked what with him having the mechanic theme going on with those robots. What's everyone else's excuse? Seriously, go back and look at them. You'll notice about half of them are wearing fairly normal clothes. Was it casual Friday? The worst offender was Firefly. It's the big finale and he turns up in a tank top and jeans. What's even the logic there? "Batman beat me last time when I wore a fully armoured suit. So this time I'll wear as little protective gear as possible so that he can beat me up even faster." And guess what? He did.
If you went with the scarecrow, best versions the Arkham games could also be number one. I don't think there's anything wrong with putting a video game as the top pick especially when it's done great like in the Arkham series.
Alright I know the 60's Batman show won't be on your Two-Face list, unless you count Shanter's performance (which you will). Number 1 will likely be the TAS version, but alas nobody else really seemed to use the character as intended.
Frank Gorshin would be my nummer ett, but he was my favorite as a kid back in the 60's. (Favorite - Comedian, Television Show, Villain, and Actor.) And I appreciated him being The Riddler in 2 (2.5*) shows, "Batman" in the 60's, and "Legends of the Superheroes" in '79". (*.5 is his appearance with Adam West on the MTV Movie Awards in '95, where they parody "Interview With A Vampire.") And I agree with your assesment of "The Batman" Riddler by Robert Englund. maybe i just love gotham, but im a HUGE batman dc fan and i said the same about the penguin and Robin Taylors Penguin made me love the villian of the penguin as much as heath ledger made me love the joker and i gotta say the riddler in gotham did just the same for me , such a good story line all around and his growth as a character
Oh boy, Two-Face is coming up! Like you, he is my favorite Batman rogue too. Also another point I agree with is that while he is a top notch Bat Rogue, he almost has a d-list vibe to him. He is so under used and when he is, Two-Face is usually always a sidekick or underling. I hate that.
I would not call Dent a d lister. He is a major foe, but is sadly underappreciated these days. Aside from Joker overexposed, I think one of the reasons why most writers can't get dent right us because they do not explore the duality in New ways. Another reason is that they probably view Dent as a Gimmick villain who is one note, which is fucking stupid considering that Riddler is one if the most popular rogues in pop culture yet he gimmick could also be consider "one note" by cynics and non comic readers.

The interesting thing about Riddler was how he was legitimized by the non-comics media, and not the comic media that birthed him. Before Batman 66, Riddler was nothing but a Joker wannabe, and no one knew what to do with him. Then, Frank Gorshin took on the role for Batman 66, turning him into a parody of Kirk Douglas, an arrogant creep who could go overboard without warning. That clicked, and for the next twenty years, THAT was the Riddler. But, when DC started toughening Batman's Rogues' Gallery in the 80s, Riddler seemed out of place again, and no one could do anything with him other than have him taken over by demons so he would be a little more threatening. Then there was Batman Animated. Even then, the writers had no clue what to do with Riddler, until they came up with the story, "If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?" in the second season. It was a lousy title, and none of the writers liked it, but it DID create the modern Riddler: the arrogant man who is the smartest guy in the room and must constantly prove it -- justifying the riddles. He is the nerd as super villain, hiding his insecurities with an arrogance born of perceived perfection. The addition of today's greatest riddles, the internet and virtual reality, to his background, gave him a greater edge. (That, incidentally, is why I disliked the Jim Carrey version: he was more or less playing the Mask all over again, the arrogance seemed half-assed, he didn't have that sense of perceived perfection, but he was definitely a nerd -- the worst aspects of a nerd, like Sheldon Cooper with superpowers.) And his involvement in the Hush storyline (which I can add simply because the movie will be coming out soon) cemented his true threat as one of the few villains who can come close to outthinking the Batman. Let's hope the upcoming movie pulls the same trick both TV series did and once again revive the Riddler as one of Batman's classic villains.

Gotham's Riddler really shone once he was allowed to come out. As in, after season 2 and when they didn't reduce his character to being stupid because he's in love. I'd probably put him 2nd, right after Arkham's Riddler.
Call me weird but I like the idea of Worst to Best more than Top X because certain entries get left out of a Fixed countdown but that;s probably just me.

I like to think that the in-game reason behind his look in Arkham Knight is in the first Riddler tape he asks Scarecrow when his plan will happen so he can "coincidently" plan his on the same day, but Scarecrow's plan was happening much sooner than Edward thought so rushed his plan. This could be the reason his bat killing mech looks more clunky and made of scrap than the other things he made as well as the hasty question mark paint job. The Hawiian shirt and cargo pants could be his work outfit and the classic suit and bowler could be what he wanted to wear but didn't have the time so just made himself look presentable by buttoning it up and doing his hair.

The fact that you still included the batman version of Riddler just shows that you should never underestimate a character based on their looks. The Batman write a better Riddler than TAS and that is given all feat.
Now, if we can only get a proper portrayal of Riddler on the big screen (No Jim Carrey please).
I think it's coming out in 2021, and no villains have been actually confirmed yet.

This is why i love collecting all of riddlers trophy his reaction in the Arkham games is just so good and funny at times.
I think JLAction did the best job, even if it was just for one episode.
I am refering to 2 specific moments in that episode:
1. "He's stealing my act!!!" That shows the Riddler pride for his gimmik. He is the Riddler!! Nobody else must leave riddles to Batman!! He confronts the Joker just for that.
2. The moment when he can't stop himself and just solves the riddle Joker proposed to him. It's supposed to be funny, but is also so accurate. The Riddler can't run from a challenge. In a way, it reminds me of "Riddler reformed", but it was even More accurate, this time.
It's a testament to the influence of the sixties show that it keeps showing up on these lists. Pretty excellent list here Rogues. My picks for the best versions of the Riddler are more or less the exact same.
My favourite scene of the TAS Riddler is in Riddler's Reform where he's screaming for somebody to tell him how Batman got out of his trap.

Hi there. I am bit disappointed that Jim Carrey 's Riddler wasn't featured on this list and neither was Cory Michael Smith ( as he is #1to me ) but I'm glad you put my 3 favourite Riddlers on there. John Glover from BTAS, Frank Gorshin from the 60s tv show and Wally Wingert from the Arkham game series. I look forward to seeing Two Face in the next video.

I've been reading some Wonder Woman from the 40's, and I think some of those villains would be perfect for your forgotten super-vilains... I know you don't take request, but I was in love with Mouse Man and his over-confidence.
I know that the TAS version would be number one, but you did a list with Mr. Freeze, would George Sanders' version be on it? He was the (prototype) TAS version before TAS.
Sanders would definately be on such a list, yes.
The Riddler trophies would have worked if they were more optional. Like, I wanna save a hostage. But I don't feel like collecting trophies.
If it makes you feel better about putting a video game version in the number one spot, just think video games are just another mediums to tell stories. With the growing popularity of video games in the mainstream, they can and have provided a very unique way of storytelling. :)
The Batman TAS version in the episode Riddlers Reform is perfect for me. Not so much his appearances in the prior episodes where he's all about video games.

A lot of villains got redesigns in Arkham Knight and I feel Riddler's is the only one that worked what with him having the mechanic theme going on with those robots. What's everyone else's excuse? Seriously, go back and look at them. You'll notice about half of them are wearing fairly normal clothes. Was it casual Friday? The worst offender was Firefly. It's the big finale and he turns up in a tank top and jeans. What's even the logic there?
"Batman beat me last time when I wore a fully armoured suit. So this time I'll wear as little protective gear as possible so that he can beat me up even faster."
And guess what? He did.

If you went with the scarecrow, best versions the Arkham games could also be number one. I don't think there's anything wrong with putting a video game as the top pick especially when it's done great like in the Arkham series.
Alright I know the 60's Batman show won't be on your Two-Face list, unless you count Shanter's performance (which you will). Number 1 will likely be the TAS version, but alas nobody else really seemed to use the character as intended.
Frank Gorshin would be my nummer ett, but he was my favorite as a kid back in the 60's. (Favorite - Comedian, Television Show, Villain, and Actor.) And I appreciated him being The Riddler in 2 (2.5*) shows, "Batman" in the 60's, and "Legends of the Superheroes" in '79". (*.5 is his appearance with Adam West on the MTV Movie Awards in '95, where they parody "Interview With A Vampire.") And I agree with your assesment of "The Batman" Riddler by Robert Englund.

maybe i just love gotham, but im a HUGE batman dc fan and i said the same about the penguin and Robin Taylors Penguin made me love the villian of the penguin as much as heath ledger made me love the joker and i gotta say the riddler in gotham did just the same for me , such a good story line all around and his growth as a character
I also like what they've done with him in Batman Year Zero and the war of Jokes and Riddles.
Oh boy, Two-Face is coming up! Like you, he is my favorite Batman rogue too. Also another point I agree with is that while he is a top notch Bat Rogue, he almost has a d-list vibe to him. He is so under used and when he is, Two-Face is usually always a sidekick or underling. I hate that.
I would not call Dent a d lister. He is a major foe, but is sadly underappreciated these days. Aside from Joker overexposed, I think one of the reasons why most writers can't get dent right us because they do not explore the duality in New ways. Another reason is that they probably view Dent as a Gimmick villain who is one note, which is fucking stupid considering that Riddler is one if the most popular rogues in pop culture yet he gimmick could also be consider "one note" by cynics and non comic readers.

Speaking of Riddler, I don't mind seeing a "forgotten villains" video for Cluemaster.
The interesting thing about Riddler was how he was legitimized by the non-comics media, and not the comic media that birthed him. Before Batman 66, Riddler was nothing but a Joker wannabe, and no one knew what to do with him. Then, Frank Gorshin took on the role for Batman 66, turning him into a parody of Kirk Douglas, an arrogant creep who could go overboard without warning. That clicked, and for the next twenty years, THAT was the Riddler. But, when DC started toughening Batman's Rogues' Gallery in the 80s, Riddler seemed out of place again, and no one could do anything with him other than have him taken over by demons so he would be a little more threatening.
Then there was Batman Animated. Even then, the writers had no clue what to do with Riddler, until they came up with the story, "If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?" in the second season. It was a lousy title, and none of the writers liked it, but it DID create the modern Riddler: the arrogant man who is the smartest guy in the room and must constantly prove it -- justifying the riddles. He is the nerd as super villain, hiding his insecurities with an arrogance born of perceived perfection. The addition of today's greatest riddles, the internet and virtual reality, to his background, gave him a greater edge. (That, incidentally, is why I disliked the Jim Carrey version: he was more or less playing the Mask all over again, the arrogance seemed half-assed, he didn't have that sense of perceived perfection, but he was definitely a nerd -- the worst aspects of a nerd, like Sheldon Cooper with superpowers.)
And his involvement in the Hush storyline (which I can add simply because the movie will be coming out soon) cemented his true threat as one of the few villains who can come close to outthinking the Batman. Let's hope the upcoming movie pulls the same trick both TV series did and once again revive the Riddler as one of Batman's classic villains.

Gotham's Riddler really shone once he was allowed to come out. As in, after season 2 and when they didn't reduce his character to being stupid because he's in love. I'd probably put him 2nd, right after Arkham's Riddler.
Riddler should have been the Antagonist in The Dark Knight Rises instead of Bane! But on my number one list is Telltale Riddler
