Some of my favorite fish. Not as aggressive as tiger barbs, and the males are stunning when ready to breed.
Black ruby barb is a fish species, endemic to Sri Lanka and endangered in their natural habitats. However, seeing how the species thrive in the ornamental fish industry and breed successfully in captivity is interesting.
I love these breeding how-tos. Maybe you should invest ($$$$) in a macro lens for close-ups of the eggs and fry.
How do you select which fish to put in the breeding tank? Plump females and the most colorful males??

Hi Jason, I love all the barbs. Beautiful fish and great information. Can they go with angels or are they too nippy?
The nippiest barbs are the store bought farm raised tiger barbs , it is a boisterous species , but the aggression comes because most common ones are hybrids, between tigers, t spanners or ruby's
So like your fancy tigers or the green tigers and even the common ones are all hybrids , which exponentially increases aggression, if you want barbs , buy a species , not a hybrid ex buy ruby Barbs, or two spot barbs , or t spanners or buy cherry barbs get a real species that exists in nature, they do have real tigers but mostly only from one location point and very rare in the hobby

@@Aquadiction I would describe it as manageable large barb , I would not keep a larger barb or Cyprinid without a pond or crazy larg tank , I hate the fact that tinfoil barbs , red tail black sharks , black sharks and bala sharks are some of the most common asiatic Cyprinids , they are tank busters and basically unkeepable for the majority of aquarists
Spanner barbs max out around 9-10 but many prolly don't make it that big , have s group now and absolutely love them , powerful swimmers though , I am debating whether to build a large plywood or buy a large glass tank . If you were worried about size you can find slightly smaller and even more colorful Dawkinsia on wetspot tropical or imperial tropical , I am holding out for d. exclamato or d. Rubrotincus also love Rohani

@Knyght Ryder that’s really interesting experience you have there, I’ve had red tail black sharks all my life and they never grow more than maybe 6 inches for me, I have seen them larger but never grow them larger myself… currently have one in a 450ltr and he’s maxed out at about all the red tail sharks we have ever had! I have stayed away from the black shark for this reason though! Barbs are just fantastic, love them all but mainly the smaller to mid range ones! Borneo red fin silver sharks maybe our personal favourites, a bit bigger than a denison Barb! Thanks for the reply dude, love hearing other people’s experiences
@Knyght Ryder forgot to say we currently own red panda barbs, denison barbs, janthochir barbs, black ruby barbs, narayan barbs, indian high fin barbs,. We have just ordered long fin cherry barbs, golden barbs, and chequered barbs, so yeah, we love our barbs, lol!! We really really want Arulius barbs also, but every time we try and get them, we come across problems so hopefully one day we will get them 😀

I am surprised by low number of eggs you got from them. I set up one pair for spawn about one week ago and got around 200-250 hatched fry.

how many days should I condition them? Should I feed them while breeding?
Really depends how big the female really is but 5 days should be good. Yes it's best to feed live brine shrimp while breeding them it can help them spawn
