Just had an issue with an F4 that wouldn't load film even with fresh batteries, found this video and confirmed it's the same procedure as my F-801. I took the F4's MB-21 apart and cleaned all the contacts with 99% alcohol and q-tips, and works perfectly again.
Thank you Paul. Great to have a reliable source of information. Even if we 'think' we remember how to do it....always best to check with a reliable source! Sincere thanks. [Edit....The F4 is magnificent. But that did not prevent me making rudimentary mistakes. I omitted to use the Program setting until half way through the film....got the iso setting wrong for good measure....and also forgot to lock the aperture ring after setting to Program. Accordingly, my first ever (SLR) roll of Kodak 400 iso (24 frame) color film is almost guaranteed to have been a dog's breakfast (not yet developed). Moving on now to fancy pants Ektar 100 color negative....I mean....what can possibly go wrong?]
Just ordered mine, it's on it's way in from Japan. You seem very knowledgeable, with a pleasant way of sharing it. Have you considered making more photography videos, on a consistent basis? I think this channel has a lot of potential to become big over time. Cheers from The Netherlands.
Thanks, you are right, I really need to do more, so thanks for the reminder, and I will try to do a video soon. Do you have a photo topic you would like to hear about?
Nice video Paul, can you tell me the lenses you got attached here please? It's 50 1/8? Which year? I recently bought mine F4s and I just love it, but want some prime 50mm AF from 90's. Thanks for answer and keep up great work :)
I don't normally use a 50mm. My prime lens selection is: 24mm ƒ2.8, 60mm micro, 180mm ƒ2.8. I almost always shoot B&W film with an orange #15 filter. But, if I were to shoot with a 50mm, I would get the ƒ1.4... if I used Nikon. I don't know it the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Milvus ZE will work on my old film cameras, but it is an amazing lens!!
Maybe you know, but when you load film into the F4 it normally advances to 1. However my F4 is not resetting the frame counter inside of the viewfinder (Currently it reads 150 and counting as I take pictures) and the camera does not advance to 1 when I load film. However when I take photos the frame counter in view finder goes up by 1 and the one near the mode selector also goes up by 1.
Hi Paul. I just acquired a F4. Everything seems to work fine. But when I open the film back and press the shutter release ( without any film obviously) The curtain does not move at all. Is this some sort of safety feature of the camera or there is some issue with that. Could you please check with yours and let me know?
I am away from my camera right now, but try taking the lens off (with the back closed), and put the shutter speed at a long setting so you can see after you click the shutter. I would use a 1 sec. setting. Click the shutter release and check to see if you can see the pressure plate or not. if the mirror goes up and you only see the shutter, the shutter isn't working, but if you see the pressure plate everything is probably fine. Thanks!
@@paulubl4380 you are a Life saviour. Though I feel a little dumb to have not thought of that myself. Lol. I was just sort of busy panicking. Anyway yes I can see the metal plate. So it seems to be some sort of safety feature and I am sure it's fine. Now I can sleep peacefully. Thanks a ton. Cheers. :)
Hi, I just bought a F4 but when I load the film in and manually spin the rewind crank to put tension in the film to make it flat, nothing happens. The crank just spins Tried manually and LED just blinks red if I try to do it automatically
Yes, There 3 things that come to mind. One, the batteries are low. Two, the aperture ring is not locked, and the camera is on program, or Three, one of both of the rewind levers are activated. Check the aperture lock, and take a photo to clear the rewind... And finally, make sure the rewind post is lowered and back in the locked position. Hope this helps? Paul
Paul Ubl thanks, I think I found out why, I got a dud. I didn't realise that it was missing the bottom part of the silver bit that goes in the canister. I hope I can return it and I'm cursing myself to not have brought film with me to test the camera!
Paul Ubl yes, I think I will try, they seem very honest and detailed in their descriptions. Already found one that would equal almost double to what I spent factoring in postage! But I rather pay more for an actual working product!
You’re the Bob Ross of loading film into cameras. Very calming video!
Alexander Meisel Thank you! That is high praise, and I’m not sure I deserve it… I used to enjoy watching Bob Ross on PBS so many years ago!

Ashish Medda safety feature. They don’t want dummies sticking their finger through shutter

I've has great luck with ebay cameras out of Japan... might be worth a look?

That’s only half the story. You can rewind manually so the leader stays out of the canister. Thought you would have known that !
THANK YOU!!
