Well if my lore is correct this takes place 14 years before gears of war 1 starts and marcus and dom that u see in the trailer are 20 to 21 years old which is why they look so different also this is their first time seeing and fighting the locust. (And the game is official we just don't know when it's coming out)

This is the very start of the Locust War NOT gears 1 but 14 years before. This is the VERY FIRST time the humans of Sera encounter the Locust Horde. Yes this is the next mainline game, NOT a spin off. Its focus is going to be on how Marcus and Doms friendship flourish after the death of Carlos Santiago(Doms older brother and Marcus best friend). They will also touch on several events across the first year. Since they said the game will show the invention of the Chainsaw Lancer which is a yr after E Day. They wanted to showcase how truely powerful and terrifying the Locust actually are. Plus everyone has no experience fighting them unlike Gears 1. They look different because they are 14 years younger then Gears 1 and 41 years younger then Gears 5. 4 and 5 is NOT an alternate universe. The new Game Director said they are proud of the story of 4 and 5 and will continue. However they saw the opportunity to do something different and couldnt pass up the idea of going back to the very start. Gears 6 will still happen eventually.
