Wow, this is NOT bad! That's a very, very rare thing for a pirate. Makes me wonder what Rare could have done with an official NES port. While some levels would have no doubt needed to been shortened, altered, or cut out altogether, it would have no doubt been far closer to the SNES version(especially with the help of some of the consoles' special chips). It may not have sold well, but Rare should have done it anyway, because what a truly amazing final sendoff for the NES that would have been! And the NES deserved it.
@@0livera.lorenz0 True, and it does give us a pretty good idea of what an NES version might have looked like for the most part. However, it's not the same hardware so it would have probably still been a little bit different. Just one example is that the NES can only have half as many colors on screen as the GBC. The GBC also has an enormous color palette of 32,768 colors compared to the NES' 27 colors.
Rare would have done great, no question. Had Nintendo hired other developers, though, they would have fucked it up. Like Virgin’s subpar Aladdin port to the NES.
Probably the highest quality NES pirate game. If Nintendo found out about this, I doubt they weren't impressed by their work. Most of the songs are pretty good, the sprites are great, the animations are solid, the sound effects are good and the physics are alright. My only complaint is that some of the sprites glitch out and when the camera scrolls, the sides of the screen do sometimes glitch out too. I really like the Hummer team, because unlike most other pirate developers, their games weren’t intended to make a quick buck screwing over unobservant buyers. They were to provide an alternative to kids in third world/post-Soviet countries who couldn’t afford the real games.

I could only stand about 30 seconds of that monotone bass in Aquatic Ambience. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and hoped it would play a different note later on, but it never happened. Yikes.
It does. The colors are washed out in the GBC version, and the graphics aren't very accurate. Hummer Team decided to downgrade the sprites from the SNES version to 3 colors while also scaling them down.
It's nice to see a bootleg done with some effort, that isn't just lazy sprite swapping. I think is fair to recognize the work of the Hummer team on this port, despite their moral ambiguity as bootleggers.
Donkey Kong Land fealt like Snes in your pocket, leading me to think GB is more powerfull than NES. I was young. Would be cool to see and hear a Nintendo made port to NES.
Why did they name it 4, when it clearly is part 1? Games that were official ported to other platforms also don't use a different version number for different platforms, when it is the same game in the end. Also why does that game start with 25 lives? And last but not least, why are the bananas in the water levels sometimes shaped like down arrows? In the original, that's because they point to secret areas but in this game there are no secret areas, so the arrows point to nothing.
The reason it was named 4 was to try to get around copyright problems. This is an unlicensed port made by Hummer Team, not official by any means. The 25 lives were added because the game was overly hard, so the developers wanted to make up for it. I’m pretty sure the arrows existed because they were copying a specific level design, but didn’t think/weren’t sure how to program the bonus areas in.
I was a little disappointed with King K. Rool not springing back life at the end, but overall, really good game. Would definitely buy it on hardware to play on my NES.
This is absolutely insane. And with that, I mean absolute fantastic! Wouldn't have mattered at all, if the first DKC for the SNES would have been an Remake.
That's due to the way the NES renders backgrounds on screens that scroll in all directions, the glitching at the side of the screen was something that they couldn't have done anything about, even then the edges of the screen would have been covered by the over scan area on most TVs at the time.
Masterful move on Nintendo's part to go back to the basics, really giving the people what they wanted; more of the same, it's usual that people will find sequels and reboots not as good as the originals, Nintendo saw that and decided to just release the same game again, but with another stroke of genius, they did it for the NES, combining 2 classics into this masterpiece.
You should check out the Game Boy Color port that was actually MADE by Rare. It's identical to the SNES version but with downgraded visuals and no multiplayer, and is way more polished than this. But...for a bootleg port on the NES, this honestly isn't too bad.
@LEGO Clayface : I've seen that. I actually prefer this one. This one looks and sounds designed for the NES, and captures that essence.
