Everyone Beware of the cheap lighted nocks on Amazon. I had one get pushed into the shaft of an arrow and the string split the shaft and cut my string into. The crossbow i was shooting was the Barnett Hyper Raptor 410. It could have just been the rapid force from the crossbow itself. On that crossbow the cam axles turn inside of a case bearing instead of just a hole in the limb, making it able to reach intended speed quicker. Like 0 to 60 in one second verses 3 seconds without bearings. So that may have been why that happened. Hadn't happened on any of my other crossbows that just have a hole in the limb.
I bought the "Nockturnal" ones from Bass Pro last year (they were quite expensive). I fired 2 bolts, both nocks were destroyed as soon as the bolt hit the bag. I watched a bunch of tutorials on installing them and followed all the instructions and best advice, yet both still blew up on impact. Unacceptable. I went back to using the factory ones (Carbon Express PileDriver 20"). I simply can't risk these things disintegrating on trigger pull/in flight/on impact. Sure, I could go with a different brand, but once bitten, twice shy I'm afraid. Especially at $35+ for a 3 pack of pretty much any decent brand.

One question I've been wondering about is if they can see it when it's sitting in the crossbow ready to fire. Like if I'm on the ground, load the bolt which activates the nock and sit there waiting....can they see that? I don't use a solid red nock, I use a flashing multi-colored nock that goes from red to green to blue in various flashing patterns. My brother said he can see it through the woods a pretty good distance away, but can the deer see it as well and would that alert them?
Shouldn't be activating until the shot...something is not right. But the flashing light reflecting off stuff, yeah, no different than your phone lighting up in low light I'd say, not good.
I've also done some camera testing of the lighted nock from a deer's viewpoint and have never been able to detect the light coming when practice shooting during legal hunting hours. If you try the test at full darkness you can see a glow coming toward the camera.

I wouldn’t worry and this is exactly what I am hearing from you. I tend to take both. Lighted knock in the evening and a regular bolt non lighted in the morning hunts.
Ok I finally pulled the trigger on the scorpyd aculeus with acu draw. It was not cheap but I want to xbow hunt as much as possible here in NY. My current xbow is not compliant but can be used during regular season and I may go out to the ranch in PA for a hog hunt.
Last year, I shot a nice buck at dark. I watched the lighted nock pass through the deer. The deer ran quite a ways, but I knew it was hit hard. The arrow was gone. After waiting 15 minutes and letting my mind wonder what had happened, I stood up and stepped 4 or 5 feet to the side and the lite nock was visible about 24 yards away. Whether from a tree stand or from a ground blind, a lighted nock should not be seen by the target. That would be a good quick experiment tonight in the dark. At 25 yards, how far to the side do you need to be in order to see the nock pointed away from you. Good video. However, a second camera angle from your perspective would have been cool too. Great info Rich. I could go into a long technical explication as to why you did not see the nock as the arrow flew toward the camera but I won't. You hit the bull's eye when you said the nock is behind the shaft. LEDs for the most part are directional light. Yes, there is a side glow, but if you look at the nock straight on from the string end the light being emitted is much brighter than the light seen from the sides of the nock. That is because the LEDs light beam is pointed to the end of the nock. I have never worried about the deer, pigs, or turkey seeing the nock, but if they do, they don't appear alerted by it. FYI the speed of light is about 982,080,000 fps
Totally agree Rich! It blows my mind how many compound and crossbow hunters don’t use them! Some people claim the effect arrow flight but I call bs on that lol. Love my Lumenoks!
The actual arrow in flight makes a distinct buzzing sound, may not be something we can hear without electronic help but it's 100% there. So there is a continuous sound from the second you fire to impact with the target. 'Jumping the string' is only part of the reaction, the whole scenario form the get go is audible to animals. Not sure if or how that can be eliminated ? Heavier arrow, helical real feather fletches, NO FLETCHES even ? As for lighted nocks, I doubt if deer react to that even a little, but they sure react to the WHACK/BUZZING sounds. It's only natural, right?
In one of my Darren Cummings interviews, he mentions how the arrow continues to give information to the deer about the direction the threat is coming from, even though the sound of the bow is what initially startles them. You're right, there's a million different possibilities. Some deer just don't seem to care, even. Others, they're pretty twitchy.
@@Deathbybunjie I forget where I saw it other than TH-cam, but they had a camera and microphone 20 yards out and the slowed down both the film and enhanced/modulated the audio and the Crack/ Buzz all the way to the target was very distinct. I was surprised at the arrow in flight audio. I am pondering just how that might be mitigated but I have no test equipment. I gotta assume natural somewhat longer fletching would play a part in that ? SO MANY little things to discover about flight of bolts ! Have seen videos ( and I know you have too ) of arrows in flight from vertical and crossbows where the arrow is literally shaking and dancing downrange the whole flight. Slow Motion is Eye opening for sure.

But for me compared to my experience with lumenoks, the firenock is way too comple (too many parts and glue, etc.) and they broke on us on our first hunting outing. The nock snapped in half and the interior was soaked in blood and not reusable. Not sure what caused it, but they doesn't get a second chance in my book. They're really hard for me to install and my success rate on installation was about 50%. I'm sure it's all my fault, but my installation success with the lumenok is 100% lol. Again just my personal experience.

I weighed my clean shot knock outs and they were about 25 grains heavier than stock piledriver nocks. I’m going to get some more knock outs but to shoot my standard nocks for target I wanted to weight match my stock non lighted to the nock out lighted ones. I glued in small fishing split shot inside the factory nocks and weighed them on a grain scale. I got them matched within a grain so I think I will be good to practice with these and get the same performance as the lighted nocks. I will be using all lighted nocks when hunting even in daylight hours. Just wanted to have better option for cheap factory nocks with same performance and weight. I agree lighted is the way to go when hunting hands down. You can trace your shot placement exactly and makes arrow recovery especially when dark and even in daylight much easier. They are a no brainer in my opinion.

Even when I was shooting a compound bow never had a bad reaction to a lighted nock. The benefits definitely out way not using them

I don't think it matters...the arrow is headed AT the deer either way, blocking the light I'm betting.

Ive had my share of misses with a vertical bow. They normally look and walk off. However, the strobe lighted knocks scare deer from my experience.

Great angle showing what the deer would see. I never worried about a deer seeing the lighted nock, now I know that’s not an issue to deal with.

Best lighted nocks are the firenock
They also come with match weight metal pieces so you won't run out the battery
