When I was a kid, my dad rewired most of the electrical in our 100 y/o house (in a small town) from 'knob&post' .... then had the inspector come out. Dad had done some electrical work in the military ... so there's that ..... DIY'ers sometimes get their experience from other places besides "the industry."
This is true! The other thing is DIY we are doing it for ourselves and our own home, and time is not money for us like it is for a commercial contractor and we don't have to cut corners when it comes to time and careful work, and are too scared to cut corners because we are not sure what is critical and what is just important!
Feel so bad for the home owner. We've all been in this position brother with one project or another. Live and learn and move forward smarter. Chin up my man, it'll get better.
Man that guy was devastated you can see he's body posture and facial expression at the end I feel bad for him. Yes you are right a lot of home owners/anyone think because there's a lot of videos out there a trowel and mastic will get the job done. The hardest part of doing tile is the prep work, back when I started it I wasn't aloud to set tile till I learned how to prep and went through the proper stages. It's been over 10 years now and still you never stop learning.
this guy got off easy, imagine if he found out his father in-law did a bad job 2 years later because everyone is getting sick from black mold and the integrity of his house has been compromised.
You're a real pro. It was quite obvious within ten seconds of walking in there you knew it was no good, but you heard him out and listened and told him you would do a full evaluation. Nice to see
Your videos are so valuable and thoughtful, thank you for taking so much time to provide this to the world. Seriously, this is effort you don't need to spend on the rest of us. I LOVED the recap showing what was right and what was wrong!!!! That's incredible, please keep doing that!! Love you too man.
I've done so many jobs that started exactly like that. Where the home owner or family members tried doing it. When they would call me, I would have to do pretty much the same thing your doing . Alot of times people do not understand how much money it costs to get tile work done. They think "if they just buy the tile" Great video man. I do not think you have put out a video i haven't liked.
You've been critiquing jobs done by others with an open and neutral composure. That's a very amiable show of character. I dunno how you can restrain emotions of frustration / disbelief while doing these inspections. Well Done, Sir.
Been doing tile for 25 years and I'll only use wood chisels. Nothing takes out stubborn thinset when you're doing repairs like a sharp wood chisel. Of course it only works for about 10 minutes before you dull the shit out of it, but for those 10 minutes, it chews through the stuff.
Please tape a part 2 or 3 to this and follow up. Id like to see the process of doing it right. There are plenty of high end showers done on your channel and sal's.

Patrick aka Anthony made a great decision to call you in. He was in a little over his head. Think of the mold he or his children would've been breathing. At least they didn't spend money on shower glass yet. This could've been so so much worse.
Same here, I've DIYed my bathroom, tile, waterproofing, etc. And my best piece of advice, watch multiple tile videos, from multiple channels, not just one, and also, sort the comments for the newest ones to see what people are saying.
I done a tiling job for my sister 24 years ago. And my brother in law said that I did a top job. The tiles look as new as when they were done. Iv done a few hundred shower rooms since then. But then I was new in the tiling game. It’s important to use the right product for fixing the tiles. And good quality grout. I used the same grout they use in swimming pools. I’d like to learn how to do 3 d tiling. Iv got my own shower room to do soon. It’s good to watch these videos. I hope it don’t cost Patrick a huge amount to put it right.
I was yelling "STOP!!!" at my screen. lol. I mean, he's right, it needs to come out, but if you ask a guy to come and take a look, you probably don't want to walk in to find everything torn up.
He pulled the tiles mostly with his fingers or with pretty minimal effort. The tiles likely would have fallen off in a couple of months of use, no joke. My bathroom floor was tiled with luan and mastic, and I popped all the tiles off in 20 minutes with a 5 in 1 tool.
Well the bright side is, that with care most of that tile can be salvaged and reapplied once the structure is done properly. Better to have to redo the basic waterproofing than to have to replace a rotten structure had they not stopped.

Lol 20:39 what a smooth produce ad.
Mastic is ok in shower walls if tile is small like subway tile , it says on their instructions maybe not this brand custom definitely says so
I see you do lots of this type inspection. How much do you charge them for it if you don’t do the actual tile job?
What is the picture in the thumb nail I didn't see it the video. Nevermind I see it's just missing waterproofing. I thought it was a piece of kerdi floating/ flapping in the wind and the tile on top of that like a tile curtain 😆
Sloppy looking cuts etc... but it would have held up just fine. Naturally when you go at it with a hammer and prybar it's gonna come apart, no matter how installed. Do you usually take a hammer with you when you take a shower?
The thing i noticed first was the Edelbrock sticker on the toolbox. Do you have anything with an Edelbrock? :)
So sadddddd ☹️, feel so bad for the father in law that just wanted to help his kids save money. Hard on the older mans pride. Wish Issac would of done a freebie.
I noticed old tile bathroom last a long time . Why did tile go from 1/2 inch to 1/4 inch?
Why does Mapei Type 1 specify that it can be used for shower walls?
You should redo the base for him and coach him through the rest. Would make a good video if anything. Does he have a trade he can barter for a couple days labor?
I agree help the dude out if he lives close bye. Stop bye once a week and give him the steps so he can do it by himself.
No just looking down angry😂
