You do amazing work! I would have called a plumber before I tried to tackle that job, just for reassurance. I hate water damage and leaks but since I've been following your videos I've gotten a little more confident about building shower pans. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on the correct way of doing the job right.

I'm a certified Journeyman Carpenter in Alberta, Canada. I do a lot of stuff outside the scope of my trade working in home renovations where i specialize and I sometimes get referred to as a handyman, which I then have to correct them as to my proper tittle. I've always thought of the term "handyman" as a term of endearment from a family member or friend who is trying to compliment and recognize your skill. People who work in the profession of a "handyman" and are comfortable with that title may want to think about what their true titles are in the industry. I would consider them Carpenters over all, even though they dabble in plumbing and electrical from time to time. Back in the day of Carpenters guilds, before unions and even before electricity, they did it all. I don't see why we need a newer, present day term to describe what we have been considered for centuries.

@@thorrippy8387 lol. I don’t agree with the second part. I fix sooo much bullshit that you handyman do and I am not saying this is you but I am a Master plumber and I’m sooo sick of fixing shit after the handyman who had no business doing it in the first place. The smartest handyman I know are the ones who leave the electric and plumbing to the professionals and do the smaller shit. Seriously. I’ve fixed too much shit after handyman it’s hard for me to respect them.

I am a general contractor and been in trades for 30years in bay area. I've done it all and specialize in kitchen & bathrooms these days. I do most of the work myself , but have subbed out tile portions every now and then. I can't tell you how many times tile guys don't pay enough attention to the weep holes and I have had to explain how important it is to make sure they don't get clogged!! pea gravel is a good choice! The fact that that shower has been leaking into subfloor for so long is a reason to demo the whole pan & replace the rotted subfloor etc. When dryrot starts it needs to be removed or the rot will continue even if you clear the weep holes and stop the leaking. I commend you for educating those that need it!!
Also I dont use membranes( only hot mop & float the walls) The fact that thinset is used as a water barrier in between the membranes is something I couldn't allow myself to do and have peace of mind!!! I know you have been doing experiments on this subject and show what happens!!! Nice job exposing the flawed practice!!
I also don't use aquabar because the paper molds and deteriorates over time! I use a thin pure tarpaper backer for my floats!! Common sense is a good thing!!😁😁

I was at a complete loss as to how the water was even able to get to the weep holes until you said that the dry pack mortar is porous which allows water that gets around the drain to utilize the weep holes to then go down the drain. I did not know that the dry pack was porous. This is very informative for a homeowner like me. Thank you.

I really appreciate the time you sacrificed to document this repair. It could almost be described as a " correction" to an improperly installed drain. Weep holes are so critical. That shower was built the traditional way..... Like a tank! One small oversight almost ruined it ,but you saved it and I'd bet it will last the homeowners another 30 years if they so Desiree. My favorite tip you shared was cutting the tiles short of the joint before you removed them. You really are demonstrating your wisdom and mentor attitude. You're really appreciated! Thanks for the video. God bless you and Merry Christmas

Isaac, nice repair. You're entirely correct that few 'tile contractors' would bother with such a repair. Most would say 'gotta rip it out' and then lay a fat estimate on an hapless homeowner - and who knows if the new shower would be any better with so many hack contractors out there.
It's these sort of how-to videos with clear explanations and good camera work that make your channel so valuable - and why it continues to grow.

One sort of similar repair I've done but not with tile is using Hardiebacker for repairing under sink cabinets that rot out, and also using it for repairing garage door panels on old Masonite garage doors. Use the smooth side and paint it with an exterior paint. It's a cheap and fast repair to repair it with a score and snappable board with some water resistance compared to wood.

As a general contractor myself I believe in just starting with a waterproof system on the top layer not crossing my fingers that a poorly designed system will work.

More of a temporary bandaid for low-cost fix jobs. Since no disclaimer that waterproofing/membrane should usually be added on top of the area/deck mud, more hack jobs will watch this video and just tile directly over deck mud with thinset like those videos that show to tile directly over backer board.
