    Fits with the sounds I've got on my low, low mileage 2002 Street Bob! I'm talking about 3,400 original miles. Will not engage with a weak battery at all. You make this operation look simple but I believe it may be a lot of work not to be the problem!
    Thanks for great video.

      1st thing to do is make sure that you have a fully charged battery. Minimum voltage is 9.6vdc to start. If it’s falls below that, it may or may not engage at all. Also, low voltage can possibly caused the solenoid plunger to stick, and stay in start the position. Another thing to check is the starter relay. If your battery is hot and this issue continues, then it’s time to replace the starter drive. With so low mileage, I would begin at the battery.

      @@petesantoro2827 A battery at resting voltage will be over that. Anything below 12V needs diagnosis including a load test (load testers are cheap online and worth owning)

    The video applies to all Denso OSGR Light Duty starters of which there are many millions on cars and trucks so you can benefit from reviewing those too. If buying a car clutch ensure it has the right rotation. Your contacts are likely fried at that point but these are not sophisticated parts and automotive kits come with all the seals and hardware for about twenty bucks online, just look at your contacts and compare or get the kit with both types. Every OSGR I own gets an aftermarket pushbutton which fit their coaxial solenoid housing and install in minutes with three screws. The buttons push the solenoid core everything in the electrical portion of the start control is bypassed. If you have a big twin starter lying around you can cannibalize it to fix a Sporty starter and the opposite is of course true.

    • @Chris-0113
      @Chris-0113 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mikechildress6073 From what I've found in my research, it's caused by an undersized starter Harley used and the engine "kick back" that happens sometimes when you turn off the bike. I replaced the race gear with an aftermarket one from "AllBalls" and haven't had an issue. That gear has roller bearings inside of it and will only roll one way. So when the engine does that kick back, it plays hell on that gear. I've seen some people also install a stronger aftermarket starter to resolve the issue. Can't confirm this is the cause, but that's what I've found in my research.

    • @Chris-0113
      @Chris-0113 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Sinehmatic I just remember it being the 1200cc Evo engines. Not sure about particular years that were effected or just all of them. From what I read, Harley used the same undersized starter on the 1200 that they used on the 883. Just doesn't have enough torque for the 1200 with a higher compression than the 883, especially in hot climates.
      But since my original post, I ended up replacing the entire starter, due to the same issue. I went with a higher kilowat starter from Allballs and have had zero problems since. The new starter turns the engine over much faster and without hesitation and no engine kickback.

I know this was posted a year ago already, but I just came across it because my 2005 sportster 1200 roadster is making a sort of grinding noise when I start it with the engine hot. Never does it from a cold start… only when I stop for gas or something like that, shut off the engine, and then go to restart the bike soon after shutting off. It makes the grinding noise but then always starts right up immediately after. Doesn’t do it all the time from a hot start either. Anyone know if this would be the starter clutch, or something else?

      While I agree with your logic, the rebuild kits for the starter solenoid, clutch, and brushes would still be worth redoing. Starter will in essence be “new” internally, but same housing. And you still saved money. Yes, the labor involved is crazy for these starters, especially if you hv to remove an oil tank and primary cover like some bikes, but it’s still worth peace of mind in my opinion to redo the internals since your already there. Starters are actually still cheap and easy to repair.

    Why are all these torque specs "from... to..."? I always pick the middle of the two values. Why do the manufacturers dont just tell me one value?

      Alot of manufactures do. HD is pretty notorious for the range. Picking the middle is good

    Warning when this happens to your Harley and you take it to the dealer they will tell you the starter must be replaced and charge you $1000.

    just an observation, Ive been a Harley owner now for quite some time and have come to the conclusion that the starters on these bikes totally suck along with the wiring to them ate, and then doing this job is a nightmare for most of us, , I had a pristine 16 softail slim with a bad starter and the thought of wrenching this bike and scratching the oil tank no matter how careful you are, made me sick on that bike , the factory exhaust , oil tank and a lot of brackets had to be removed to do this job, what a hassel
