      TalkTV had a similar reaction to the Queen's death except the main female anchor started to cry when she finds out saying "And I'm extremely sorry to have to bring you the exceptionally sad news that Her Majesty The Queen has died". She continues to weep as she immediately joined Mike Graham in the studio and continued her sadness into their conversation.

    22:40 This is the radio station I listen to every day. Very emotional moment. I was listening to this show, and due to a poor signal, stopped listening around 6;15pm. With a better signal I listened to it at again at 7pm to hear the top of the hour headlines with no idea she had died, and instead of the 7pm news, it was talking about "King" Charles. I paused for a moment to work out if they was talking about a future time when she died or if she had died. When I realized I ran to tell my dad and put it on speaker , just in time for the Prime Ministers address to the nation. Was in shock and had goosebumps.

      To be fair, as a public broadcaster, BBC radio stations have been trained for years to be on standby + ready for any news or announcements related to royal families' death. As for privately owned commercial radio stations, they don't have the obligation to provide training to their DJs + staff and install special news alert equipments for the occasion.

      @@izzatfauzimustafa6535 They certainly don't have the same levels of formal protocol binding them in the same way. Every station is meant to have some sort of plan, but how much of one exists for smaller ones? Put it this way, I was a student radio regular for three years (late 00s, but the Queen and her husband were already in their 80s then) and don't recall doing an obit shift. By fortunate coincidence, all the significant Royal deaths in modern times (Diana, Queen Mother, Philip, now Elizabeth II) have come outside term time...

From serving in WWII as a truck mechanic/driver in the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service to owning a Saudi king (Abdullah bin Abdulaziz) by showing him she can drive in her Land Rover when women in his country couldn't, and even staying on her horse when a 17-year-old was shooting at her. I had BBC Radio 2 on in the background, but due to the reports of the Queen's ill health I had my VPN on (I'm American) and was paying attention to BBC One TV online. BBC One announced it earlier than the radio did, but I heard God Save the King overlapping each other from two different places. Radio 2 was, from what I recall, playing its regular schedule and the DJs were doing their regular thing with the occasional "Well I hope the Queen will be alright".
    Every single BBC Radio station except CBeebies went into a several hours long special talking about the Queen, her life, and her accomplishments, alongside related news stories. Radio 3 went into peaceful classical a few hours later which I slept to that night. By the next day Radio 2 was back to playing music, but it was gentle, inoffensive, and soft, often with songs about missing others and being sad in general. They also had a sombre news sounder every hour.

    • @EssexNonLeague
      @EssexNonLeague 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Radio 2 actually had restrained programming. The news broke around 1:40 on Jeremy Vine's show (hosted that week by Tina Daheley), with some discussion up until the end of the show. Steve Wright's show was largely the same, but he was a much toned down figure than usual, as was the music. Sara Cox's show, by which time after 5pm things were not good, had none of the usual features, and was largely just toned down music and messages about the Queen, with the links also all toned down, probably in anticipation of the news to come.

    The sameness of the reports comes from the long-planned "London bridge" protocol, established to send out across all networks the same notice and the same script of what to say.
    Can you imagine being a young person working their first job at a radio station, and being given the script to break in and make the announcement. Surreal.

    I think some people would argue it was unprofessional because many people had suspected such an announcement was coming as the afternoon wore on on the 8th September, but I think many more people would identify with the distress in Andrew Marr’s voice when he made the announcement on LBC. You really wouldn’t think the death of a 96 year old lady who had been unwell for some time would be a shock, but somehow it was. I was watching the news on TV when the announcement came, knowing the Queen was under the medical supervision of her doctors, but when the news of her death broke I was immediately in tears. The Queen has been a constant in the lives of so many of us for so long. She was a familiar face for her Christmas speeches and her appearances on the Buckingham Palace balcony in good times, but she was also a source of reassurance in bad times. One of her finest moments was the speech she made when the UK went into its first covid lockdown in 2020. Her calm authority at such a difficult time would teach the politicians a thing or two.

    Canadian here. My husband and I were loading up to go camping when the news was reporting that the family was at her side. We had news updates on our way and when we reached our location and backed up to put the camper in place, the news broke. For some reason, it was a shock, we didn’t think it would happen so fast. The memory for us is that the town we’d arrived to camp in was Coronation, Alberta. How fitting of a town to be in when we heard the news.

    • @sbclaridge

      Speaking of Alberta, I can't help but be reminded that the main highway between Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta Highway 2, is named for Queen Elizabeth II. It got that name in 2005 to commemorate Her Majesty's visit to Edmonton for Alberta's centennial celebration.
      Even Her Majesty's mother had a major Canadian highway named for her; the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way) from Toronto to Niagara Falls is named for The Queen Mother.
      Obviously as a Commonwealth country, Canada has many things named after, and commemorating, members of the Royal Family.
