    We recently did a recording session in my favourite studios in the world: Sunset Sound Studio Three, where Prince recorded 3 of his best albums!
    We used Sunset Sound's amazing Mic collection featuring U67s, FET47s, 87s and put them up against an inexpensive $1700 mic setup of Shure Microphones and a Focusrite 8PreX interface.
    And guess what? The results were amazing! It goes to show that the most important thing is a great room, with well-tuned drums, but most of all: A great performance!
    Creativity is king! Watch the video and check it out for yourself.
    Many Thanks to Focusrite, Shure, Sunset Sound, Jonah Smith, Jon Button, Blair Sinta for making this happen.
    Have a marvellous time recording and mixing,
    Warren

      It's a bit chicken-and-egg I think. On the one hand, if you don't know what you're doing then you can make even great gear sound awful. On the other, if the gear starts off sounding better then it'll be more forgiving of less ability.

    • @seenbelow
      @seenbelow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CLaw-tb5gg For sure, but I think it also applies for the learning itself. I didn't know the difference between preamps until I heard a really good one. Same goes for microphones. Also I had to see my room measured first to hear where the buildups occur (below 100 Hz). I think it's a back and forth thing.

    • @CLaw-tb5gg
      @CLaw-tb5gg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@seenbelow I've only got sound samples on the Internet to go on, but whenever I've listened to microphone or preamp shootouts, the really expensive revered ones always sound a bit meh to me. I've listened to so many comparisons between, I dunno, a vintage U47 and a £500 mic and often I prefer the cheaper one. However, I don't claim to have golden ears or anything, and perhaps I'm just not hearing what others are.

      Produce Like A Pro Shure should send you a massive check for this one no doubt about it. Having extremely expensive gear is nice but unless you are a "money is no object" type person its hard to say that there is (for the sake of the title) $98300 difference in sound quality between those mics. Just goes to show that the room and the performers are exceedingly more important than the price of the microphones.

    • @FanaticDrummer
      @FanaticDrummer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ts all about the genre. Ive heard hard rock drummers record with cheap mics in great studios and it sounds just dirty and clunky because the mics cant handle the dynamics higher end mics can when pushed in a more demanding setting. For a clean metal/ prog sound, these cheap mics wouldn’t hold up to the mix or sound signal. The drum kit here is meant for a dirty indie classic rock sound, its already compressed and dead naturally. But with resonant drums, cheap mics have a nasty distortion to them.

    This is great, Warren. I teach various studio disciplines, and I'm currently teaching mainly beginner students to engineer at Point Blank in London. I'm going to be sharing this video with all my students, because I feel it backs up my take on how far expensive gear will get you - particularly when you're starting out. I usually tell my students what I think are the most important elements to getting a great recording :
    1. Song
    2. Players and arrangement
    3. Instruments
    4. Recording environment (i.e. just the space you're recording in - whether or not it's a traditional "studio")
    5. Sympathetic engineer who knows how to *LISTEN* (so many people forget this)
    6. Gear
    I've heard and made records that sound amazing, which have been made on a shoestring. Similarly, I've worked on sessions in huge commercial studios with amazing gear, and ended up with lacklustre results because of any number of factors. Sometimes my students are so caught up with having the best monitors, interface, mics, plugins... and forget to actually MAKE SOME MUSIC.
    Thanks again, Warren.

Next album I wanted to mic the toms as well and was worried that I needed to shell money on at least 4 MD421. That inspires me to try with cheaper options like those or Sennheiser E603s or AT230s.

      Between used dynamic mics and Russian/Chinese condensers there's plenty of budget options to get great quality recordings. Some cheap copies of common mics also sound great.
      Mic quality is often not *the* determining factor anyway. It's room sound, mic placement; signal chain and editing knowledge (and audio source, ha ha). Unless you have absolute garbage to work with, those factors are way more important. A $5000 mic will not give you good sound in a crappy room, ever. A $50 mic, however, will give you good sound in a good room.

      Eric I bought an amazing pack for an amazing deal on Amazon, it was the lewitt drum mic pack. The over heads alone lct 340s cost more by themselves than I got the whole pack for not to mention it comes with a Rex 640 dual element kick mic, three tom mics and a snare mic with a wicked case that could survive an earth quake. The whole package went for 1200 on Amazon. They are much better overall than my audix mic pack I had. I got it a while ago but I highly recommend seeing if it's still availiable at that price on Amazon. If not for the audix drum mic pack also is a nice but for just a few bucks more the lewitts were unbeatable. Good luck with whatever you get.

      @@ruthlesscutthroat4030 a dynamic mic works well in this application so that it doesnt pick up the piano. so no large condenser or tube mic works -cheap or spendy- w live vocals, and then cranking the gain and eq with good preamps or plug ins but i think mostly his voice is really super!

    It was interesting with Prince living in the session room. Forgetting about all the world and its distractions, temporarily live only in his mindset & emotions. Al Pacino says desire can sometimes beat talent, what say ye? Imagine an ambitious little prick wanting it more than anyone else.
    I know Celine Dion was crazy good from the start and also ambitious. Her mother was ambitious too and wrote Celine's first hit. So cool, home made song by a home-maker. I remember hearing the Titanic theme the first time on radio. I thought No way anyone can sing that good and beautiful.. it's a trick and edited. The song isn't that high but sounds majestic.

      Thank you for being so honest and kind enough to help people. You are rare. I put in many years of being a live singer/guitarist/song writer and had to put in work on other peoples projects in exchange for some of my songs to be recorded. I was never happy with the half ass recordings and about 6 years ago decided to take matters into my own hands an learn recording. I have learned many things from you and can produce my own stuff now using old protools 6.7 and a couple cheap mics. I have 1/10th of the gear as a small studio and get great results doing all the singing/ playing and recording by myself. I work endless hours doing this and don't know why but I can't stop. If you would ever be interested in hearing something just say the word and I can put up a link. Worst case you will get a good laugh.

    I don't think it sounds as close as you're saying. The more expensive kit sounds way less harsh (specially on the hihat) and with a bit more lows and low minds. It sounds like it would be way easier to mix. The cheaper kit sounds good for what it is, but if I were to mix those drums I would have nightmares figuring out ways to give presence and definition to the cymbals while cutting the harshness out. Still completely possible to make a great mix! But harder!
    On the flip side, I do like the fact that room still maintained a lot of its character despite the difference in setups, and I actually liked the cheaper tom mics better than the 421's.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Andre, absolutely! They are definitely different, I did love the rooms in particular and as many people are pointing out the toms could easily be better! When I was listening back I actually confused the tom mics! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

      Чикунов Максим thanks bro im pretty new to this, i was worry that the preamp wont be feeding enough power since the mics are plugged in from a great distance... another question, should i record with EQ and compression and preamps right from the beggining or should i record as is and editing later?

    • @Desperado94520
      @Desperado94520 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      L'Quik Suárez it's all about your taste. If you have an EQ you like or such compressor, don't put it away, use it. But if you have some doubt about using some outboard gear, don't use it. You always can apply effects in the box. One thing should be noted - if you record with overEQ or overCompressing, you have no chance to fix it after. Have a great time recording!

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi L'Quik Suárez, it sounds like the way you are setting up is correct! If you are concerned about level etc going into a pre amp that is an interesting point. On pre amps like Neve etc we like to drive them almost into distortion, but with most on board Pre Amps that are in Interfaces I would print clean and use plug ins for drive etc. I hope that helps? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

      A lot of people buy certain mics for their distinct characteristics but when it comes down to it in a full song you won't be able to hear much of the difference. Just goes to show 99.99% of a recording is the engineer, room, and the players.
