Brennan’s interpretation of Asmodeus is always so amazing. Turning Vespin Chloras into a puppet and then ranting at Zerxus about how “one of our foolish paper dolls” had interrupted the gods plans was chilling. Brennan brought back that perspective with Asmodeus looking so tired as he explains to Ayden that the people in this city aren’t real. This time it really serves to demonstrate the difference in his respect for the members of his family/the gods, compared to puny mortals.
The Emissary has so few lines, but they are so on point, it's awesome! You can see Noshir being so present for everything that's happening, and it just shows in what his character is saying/doing.
2:28:09 This is how you know that Nick has played with Brennan for years in his home game: he is the first to figure Brennans clue out and break under the implications.
@@miro-jz1si True. Nick put it best: "You're going to love this! I'm going to kill your brother!" Ashley, on the other hand, was acting like the Mom to her kids that the Everlight is. But then the kid proposed blowing up her family with a nuke.
@@oldfrend "We can help you win the war". The war is with the Betrayers. She's saying we can help you kill your family. That's what Nick realises in that moment, that she's designed the weapon to only kill Betrayers and leave them unscathed. It's the moral hinge the entire story swings on. What is the "good" thing to do in this scenario? This is the moral conundrum the players are met with.
I thought this too, but then i remembered that fcg wad gifted to another city and was not present in aeor at the end. D probably found their remains in marqet
*slow claps* “you hold within you, a poem so beautiful it could convince reality to kill a god” probably the most beautiful sentence I’ve ever heard in my life. Ik Brennan was talented but that’s insane to come up with on the spot.
Ah yes, the regular family reunion, just you your siblings, your pseudo siblings who are married to eachother, your siblings who are evil and abusive and mean that you have been fighting for so long there's no documentation of the before, and that one stranger that has murdered one of your siblings and assumed their place Isn't it always so awkward
@@Mazygolucky I think it was mentioned that they couldn’t feel the anger they might have wanted to at the Matron in ep1. My guess would be part of the spell erasing the former god from existence it also sort of over wrote peoples feelings about that god. So they can all have feelings about the fact that she ascended but they can’t have feelings about the erased god.
the only reason the matron COULD replace the previous god at all was because he wished to experience death himself. if the gods know that then most of them would probably accept the matron, at least partially.
You and your family have been fighting for decades. It's a brutal war, long, long since passed the point of squabble it once was. You are tired. Tired of the aches in your muscles that don't heal like they once did. You are tired of the stench of the smoke and fire of the mortar shells. You are tired of having to look across the battlefield and see your brother and know you have to wake up tomorrow and try and kill him. Then, you find out your grandchildren -- who were the catalyst of the fighting to begin with -- have come up with a solution to end the fighting, and it involves ending you. You put aside your differences with your estranged brothers and cousins, to try and learn what your grandchildren have made and stop them. Except, when they tell you, they tell you with glee in their faces and joy in their hearts that they want to help you. They want to run a sword through the hearts you have so long battled against... but you haven't been able to stop them beating. Yet, the joyous, youthful face looks up at you with expectation. They have suffered. They've suffered not just because of your brothers who hate them, they've suffered because of you. What can you tell them? No? The war must continue? They must continue to suffer and die, when the whole reason you started fighting was so they didn't have to? But you can't say yes. How can you? In the end, that's still your brother. That's still your cousin. You fled death and destruction with them at your back. There's no bond stronger than what you share with them. How do you grapple with that? How can anyone be expected to take that level of guilt and inner conflict?
Beautifully put to words. It's like two incompatible parents, who both love each other very much, but cannot stop fighting. They fought and fought, then finally separated, but now have custody disputes that rage and never end. But they still believe they love each other. One day the youngest child comes up to one parent and says, "Mommy, what if I just kill Daddy and live with you forever? Wouldn't that make you happy?" It's messed up, it's unfair, it's selfish, it's cruel, and it's destroying the innocence of the only victims: the children. If the parents cannot change, then the only answer is for them to go.
After episode 1, I was wondering what Brennan is going to do to sow discord and panic amongst them. Sure, some of them don't want to bring the city down, but surely just that one disagreement about the end-goal can't end up being *THAT* dramatic. And then the hospital scene. You think you've found your inside person, you cure her son, know she's your *real* worshipper, she's *your child* - and then she drops that line, "We can help you win". The long intro of episode 1, it may have been confusing and disorienting to many, but it was such a perfect setup - as soon as this archmage implies that she can help the crew win the war, you know from what an ignorant place that's coming - after all, how could a mortal know about the history these *siblings* share. It's perfect, it even shines light back into Calamity, the confrontation between Zerxus and Asmodeus, the way Brenann played Asmodeus and insisted that the Primes are their siblings. Chef's kiss.
I didn't see it that way. Because I thought and still think, that what she ment was that they can help them win the war against Aeor. Also, the idea that gods think of them as pathetic and weak, and yet they feared them enough to burry the hatchet for atleast some time, is such a disgusting level of hubris in it's own, neither side is free of it.
Ashley is so good that I often forget she is acting and start thinking she is just being herself. Then she changes to a new character and her facial expressions and intensity change to that new character and Ashley is gone.
Brennan's line 'even the disease is given leave to rest' was really heartwarming. Parasites and pathogens don't have an innate sense of right and wrong, so whatever bacteria or virus was raging within the boy was just doing the only thing it knows how to. To be kind enough to show love and sympathy even for the sickness within someone shows what kind of heart the Everlight really has. Love it! And Ashley Johnson's reaction to hearing that the boy now has 70 hitpoints at level 0 was just the best
Laura's performance as the Matron was captivating and it must be full circle to go from Vex losing her brother to playing the one who took him Edit: oh my goodness protect Slitch at all costs
What performance? I was too distracted by her constantly stroking her bottom lip for some reason and biting her nails throughout the episode. It was gross.
Brennan "Birdfact" Mulligan - 2:39:24 The birds praying to Asha is actually scientifically proven! In a published study, a scientist was able to cause pigeons to complete rituals to receive food. Those rituals were eventually taught to other pigeons, and they started to create their own as well. BF Skinner's "Superstition" Experiments
When ravens or other corvid find one of their own dead, they will stay around and caw in what almost seems like a funeral. I don't know how much of the intent is just humans projecting their feelings, humanising them, but they do behave differently. And we know they have a concept of self like us, primates and dolphins do.
Idk why this had a google translate option but I clicked it and it said Calamity: It was Downfall: Slitch cant believe the calamity's downfall was Slitch. the crazy son of a bitch did it.
I love how Brennan encourages his players to get creative with their skills and makes every idea sound amazing. I also love how he sees his players' intent and can guide them on how to meet that intent within the 5e rules. I also, as a dnd novice love that he explains the implications of some rolls succeeding/failing like the silence. It really helps me understand the gravity of the situation.
I love how Taliesin is portraying the *feral* side of the Wildmother. Because in much of Critical Role's stories, she's the kind, warm embrace, motherly type. But this is Mother Nature. She has another side...and that side is scary.
Yeah, she's a mama bear, she's a knotweed choking out the other life to grow further, she's a flood and a drought, she's nightshade and poison and claws and teeth
Im torn, he's portrayal makes sound sense, but when you compare it to how she acted in entirety of her other appearances in CR. Her attitude is also wastly different, as if between calamity and the present, she aged by like 20-30 human years, almost as if a bit of Ashton has snuck it's way into her.
Well, if you take into account the state of the world at this time and its damaged state, a harsh feral Wildmother is probably pretty on point. The land is suffering, barren, and that brings creatures into feral nature.
The wild mother is using nearly 100% of her power to feed life back into exandria, She has no power left to spare. She is starving herself to feed her countless children, leaving both her godly form and her human reincarnated HUNGRY.
"Isn't it artistic and beautiful weaving our own end." What a line, and such good inspiration for the god of elves, inspired even in desperate introspection.
Can I say, the God's portraits are absolutely beautiful! Also, I love how Pelor/Ayden doesn't have a SINGLE subtlety bone in him. Planning to board of Aeor with him must have been a nightmare for the other gods, the boy flaunts his divine light at any opportunity :')
For those of you who didn't notice, I love how Nick Marini (who portrays the Dawnfather) appears in the opening title when the Sun Tree illuminates. Such great attention to detail!

MAJOR SPOILERS The reveal at 2:28:09 is the single best way Brennan and matt could have wrote it, it gives a very clear reason as to why Ludi and so many others want to remove the gods but without just making them mindless assholes
There was no way Ludinus would play something to Bell's Hells if it didn't show something that might convince them to join his side. I've been a team Ludinus this entire campaign and I thought all my talking points about why the gods were bad would be in direct line with the people in Aeor. It actually shocked me that the celestials had my line of thinking about the gods, and it makes sense since they would be the only ones to realize the gods aren't trying to kill each other.
@@huntertuggle2667 I think one of the main points of this campaign is that none of the sides here are to be taken really, Ludinus is a power-hungry, fascist piece of sh*t and the gods are condescending, self righteous, narcissistic pieces of sh*t whose selfish actions can cause actual apocalipses, so I think that both of them suck, the gods and ludinus gotta go and we should put chet up there as the all-powerful deity to reign over all
@@huntertuggle2667 So you get rid of the gods, then what? You think Predathos just stops? How about the millions that will suffer under the Kruviris Imperium? THAT'S WHAT I WAS JUST THINKING like it wasn't a mental thing so in theory there possibly has to be a physical copy or some remnants that a spell could put back together
What's to say D doesn't have that already? Or D was the reason fcg went berserk, but we'll never learn that so maybe Matt reworked it in some way so D is still a relevant part of the story?
Taliesin playing a cleric of the Wild Mother: “She is kind, and warm, and nurturing. In your darkest moments, find comfort in her gentle embrace.” Taliesin playing as the Wild Mother: “I am literally going to rip this man’s throat out with my teeth.”
@@WD_Gaster66yeah but I can see Percy and Molly and Ashton in there too. I looked Cad a lot but I think the character got to shine for me because he wasn't trying to be intimidating and edgy.
I’d absolutely love to see a demon adherent to the Matron; demon physicality is chaos, so Slitch may take on feathers, strings and porcelain features due to his devotion.
"Why did you make us? Why did you make all of this? When you knew that you were hurting this world, why didn't you just leave?" Deepest most meaningful line in the whole episode to me, tbh. 2:53:22
@@doov3537My guess is the Lawbearer has already made that decision and The Emissary is somehow going to be pivotal in creating the Divine Gate. It would explain why he NEEDS to survive, and why Arcadia wouldn’t share the reason with the risk of Betrayers finding out. It would probably be difficult to convince them to leave but that way there’s no need, and the Gate has a kind of law vibe to it. What doesn’t make sense in this theory to me is if one god can create the Gate, why couldn’t another destroy it?

Really fun episode or dark or both. I really liked a lot of the interactions and stuff. It was cool to see Ashley as Everlight deal with being told basically as the person playing Ayden put it “Hey, I got you a gift. I’m going to kill your brother” I also enjoy all the Wildmother x Lawbearer drama it was so funny “I got you gift, I made a forest with rules” and then the Wildmother saying “That is a better gift, typical” to learning the lawbearer is growing her a forest or a few
"If you wanted to make us to serve the gods, you should not have made us good." (2:56:20) - probably one of the greatest lines I've ever heard in any artwork, especially one being improvised. Well done, Brennan.
Just to be clear... the Father Milo trolling is that he's Asmodeus, using Asmodean magic, and pretending like it's Dawnfather magic to mock Ayden. Right? Am I reading that correctly?
To make it even funnier it’s likely that as he’s lived an e entire mortal life in that shell it’s possible he is a legitimate ordained priest of the Dawnfather. Meaning for atleast 20 years he’s just been an a-hole tarnishing his brothers reputation.
@@mmstanford00 AND since Ayden is a bit younger than Milo, it's possible Ayden, as the shell for the Dawnfather, knew going in that Asmodeus has been goofing around with worship in his name. I love the dynamic.

I'm just waiting for Brennan to be like, "And your guide comes to show you the way, he issues a greeting as he approaches, 'Smiley day to ya!', Sam would you come to the table please?"
I love how Brennan has this gift to make the players feel like they make the coolest choices ever, and to help them actually make it even cooler than they imagined. I love that he is totally fine abandoning his own ideas and where he wants things to go, in favor of bending reality a little so that everyone can tell the most epic story possible
Always see a player who really knows the rules helping other folks with their characters. Glad Nick is there to help manage the weight of a group of 20th level characters.
I’m really digging Nick’s portrayal of the Dawn father. Is anyone else getting Jesus vibes? As an ex JW, it’s almost surreal to see how I imagined Jesus acted as a child reading stories. It’s bittersweet
According to many creatives that have worked on DnD, they usually describe Pelor as the embodiment of the Old Testament God. So perhaps it's appropriate that his human avatar is Jesus coded.
"Primes, Betrayers, side-by-side, with the impossible choice between them." "Pepperoni or pineapple?" "¿Por qué no los dos?" God, that was a good comeback. (BTW, I never studied Spanish, everything I know is from reverse osmosis due to living in the US, I believe he said, "Why only those two" or something to that effect; did I translate that right?)
Seriously, Pep and Pineapple is the standard order for my Friday night gaming group. The fact that BLM is aware of it's wonders fills me with great happiness. ;^)
@saskiascott8181 the divine gate isn't possible. Many calamity milestones in the timeline haven't yet happened. This ceasefire is made in the middle of the war, not the end. The divine gate shouldn't be in play until the war ends
I love who is who, Tal as the Wild Mother, Laura as the Matron & Ashley as Serenae. They come full circle. I hope we get the beginning of Caduceus' stories at the end of this. The Wild Mother has to go create the Blooming Grove with the head of a hero, the Matron must "gift" her worshippers The Clays to her... I just said that but...... I just remembered Caduceus' talking about that. Tal said the Wild Mother had few followers except in a sort of cult. The Clays.... though devout are not in a cult and at once become her gardeners. and they were originally the Matron's.
and they are guarding the parts of a "fallen hero"... maybe one that has to be taken apart so that the a certain "poem" that is inside of them doesn't get completed in the future?
Now with Asha, Taliesin has across all three campaigns officially played a male character, a genderfluid character, a non binary character and a female character.
the only downside to this series so far is that the name Arcadia Cereventorix was wasted on a fake id of the knowing mistress and won't be a character later on

The Emissary has so few lines, but they are so on point, it's awesome! You can see Noshir being so present for everything that's happening, and it just shows in what his character is saying/doing.
Abu's and Laura's scene together in Abu's place of "worship" was peak DnD. A true work of art that scene was, they both killed it.
Yes! I was so captivated by both of them!
That scene convinced me that Ludinus is right

@@hugosimoes1490genuine question, how so? What convinced you?
2:28:09 This is how you know that Nick has played with Brennan for years in his home game: he is the first to figure Brennans clue out and break under the implications.
Maybe Ashley realized it, too, given how she reacted.
@@Catalyst375I think Ashley thought it was a good thing at first, and Nick knew immediately whatever solution the archmage has, it's not good.
@@miro-jz1si True. Nick put it best: "You're going to love this! I'm going to kill your brother!"
Ashley, on the other hand, was acting like the Mom to her kids that the Everlight is. But then the kid proposed blowing up her family with a nuke.
i'm sorry i must be super dense right now cuz... what clue?
@@oldfrend "We can help you win the war". The war is with the Betrayers. She's saying we can help you kill your family. That's what Nick realises in that moment, that she's designed the weapon to only kill Betrayers and leave them unscathed. It's the moral hinge the entire story swings on. What is the "good" thing to do in this scenario? This is the moral conundrum the players are met with.
Very cool to think that FCG is alive and (probably) active during this miniseries
Imagine Sam joins the next episode for a two minute cameo
@@Pingviinimursu I want this to happen more than anything
He gets killed like Perkins did in C2, and that’s how FCG was dormant until Dancer fixed them.
That qoute is so fucking metal and I love it.
That and "if you wanted us to serve the gods, you shouldn't have made us good" just floored me. These lines man.
Me before Dawnfall: Aw, the wildmother is so cute and wholesome!
Me after: Don't fuck with mother nature.
When Caduceus said “nature is very violent” he meant it!
I'm so amused that everyone is just coming to this realization now. Her title is the Wildmother😅. Like a mama bear, no?
Damn, Nature! You scary!
Ah yes, the regular family reunion, just you your siblings, your pseudo siblings who are married to eachother, your siblings who are evil and abusive and mean that you have been fighting for so long there's no documentation of the before, and that one stranger that has murdered one of your siblings and assumed their place
Isn't it always so awkward
lol I wonder how they are so chill with the Matron even though she killed their sibling.
I feel the truce is playing part in that @@Mazygolucky
@@Mazygolucky I think it was mentioned that they couldn’t feel the anger they might have wanted to at the Matron in ep1. My guess would be part of the spell erasing the former god from existence it also sort of over wrote peoples feelings about that god. So they can all have feelings about the fact that she ascended but they can’t have feelings about the erased god.
It was also hinted the god of death chose to die.
the only reason the matron COULD replace the previous god at all was because he wished to experience death himself. if the gods know that then most of them would probably accept the matron, at least partially.
Wouldn't that make you happy?"
It's messed up, it's unfair, it's selfish, it's cruel, and it's destroying the innocence of the only victims: the children. If the parents cannot change, then the only answer is for them to go.
At least it shows in a very human way why the gods decided to remove themselves from the world and create the Divine Gate.
@@misticsword7561 That is one way to put it. They didn't want to murder their family, but they didn't' want their kids caught in the middle, either.
'The answer, My Friend, is blowin' in the wind. The answer is blowin' in the wind.' -Bob Dylan.
I mean you failed to mention that every one of the Betrayers is objectively evil and actively try to exterminate mankind whenever possible
What that archmage sees as a war, the Gods see as a small family argument.
Thankyou for expounding on that because it confused me for a good 10 minutes lmao
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought how full circle it looks like.

@@rayplays7498 That's literally the character lmao
@@rayplays7498so he's succeeding in his delivery then?
I love his voice. So smooth and calm. I could listen to him all day
I love how Brennan encourages his players to get creative with their skills and makes every idea sound amazing.

@@huntertuggle2667 I think one of the main points of this campaign is that none of the sides here are to be taken really, Ludinus is a power-hungry, fascist piece of sh*t and the gods are condescending, self righteous, narcissistic pieces of sh*t whose selfish actions can cause actual apocalipses, so I think that both of them suck, the gods and ludinus gotta go and we should put chet up there as the all-powerful deity to reign over all

and they are guarding the parts of a "fallen hero"... maybe one that has to be taken apart so that the a certain "poem" that is inside of them doesn't get completed in the future?
@@zerodkarma I think the "Head of the Hero" was "The Emissary".
3:41 Yo, it's legitimately so nice having Sam back 😂
Now with Asha, Taliesin has across all three campaigns officially played a male character, a genderfluid character, a non binary character and a female character.
He's collecting it all!
I'll put 5 quid on "non-gendered horror" being next, something a little closer to himself, as a treat
This is important why? In what way is sexuality remotely important?
@@briangriggs5703 Ah yes, the famous sexuality: woman
@@briangriggs5703they weren’t saying it was particularly important. just pointing it out cus it’s kinda cool the range he’s had lol
Brennan is just amazing. That energy is like the most supportive coach and the creativity of an artist. Just a beautiful combo in a GM.
"Double, triple much. Infinity." (brb crying)
Abubakar's portrayal of Corellon is so insanely spot on that it made me change how i imagined Correllon to act and behave
"Should have known better than to use their reaction" has to be my favorite line in this episode
I immediately heard Sailor Saturn's theme playing in my head when Laura manifesting the Matron herself in this moment.... Spooky as hell but I love it
the only downside to this series so far is that the name Arcadia Cereventorix was wasted on a fake id of the knowing mistress and won't be a character later on

I can't believe Brennan had two sessions with Laura Bailey and didn't have any Emily Axford PTSD triggers.
Laura is a goddess but Emily is the actual devil
@@raiseumhigh6067 They're both devils to their respective DMs
@57:10 .. Brennan switches the music and my soul is yanked out of my body into a *secret place* 😂
