Well if we look at the subtext of some of the paintings in Hollow Mind, a puritan witch hunter from the 17th century would not be thrilled that his brother is together with the enemy. Philip felt that Caleb betrayed everything they stood for so he committed fratricide.
Apparently Caleb was hanging out with a witch and Philip didn’t want him to, he though witches were bad. So he brutally murder his brother by fighting him then having Caleb burned to his death! Ever since that day Philip kept making more Caleb’s aka golden guards.
