As a Swede i gotta tell you your in for a treat if you are a truluy historica madman like me. Follow the songs and i will follow you. When i learned i had relatives in america i started to pay attention to history and boy its magic.
Gustavus Adolphus gained the name "The Lion from the North" because one of the royal symbols of Sweden is a golden lion, and so happened to fit into an old prophesy where "The Lion of Midnight" (the bit in German in the song) is described like this: "...mighty lion born of northern star will conquer the realm of evil, usurp the eagle's sceptre..."". Basically, pro-Swedish propaganda made the king out to be this legendary lion. It fits really well, with his fight against the evil catholics and all, and so he became knon as the Lion from the North. The king is remembered today primarily because of his military cunning and has earned him the nickname "The father of modern warfare", because he revolutionized warfare up to the point that the "old" way of doing it became obsolete. Military academies around the world still teach his tactics, amongst others of course. Historians have theorized that Gustavus Adolphus would have been to understand warfare up to the time of WW1 (if he somehow time traveled) - after that technology leaps ahead too much. Crazy to think.
The 30 years war are considered by many historians as the actual First World War cause so many countries were involved and the death toll were enormous.
Gustav Vasa (a king also known as "The Father of Modern Sweden") made Sweden protestant in the 1500's after Martin Luther (accidentally) started the protestant revolution. That's why Sweden joined the protestant side in this war (Sweden is still protestant to this day). It was one step in a long line of steps that led to the downfall of the Holy Roman Empire in the early 1800's. Napoleon's rise to power was the final nail in the coffin.

Oh and as a Swedish i recon it's different lyrics a bit and i would maybe ask a swedish translate the swedish version cause its stronger words in it and becomes like another lyric in between
The Carlus Rex-album was made in 2 versions - Swedish and English. Do not make the mistake of thinking they have the same lyrics for each song. They are frequently different to the point of just having the same melody. I suggest reacting to both versions, in full. Avoid the official lyric videos of the Swedish version - as they only have the text in Swedish. Use uploader "Piscator"'s videos for tanslated lyrics.

"Mandatory service is short, son. Trust me."
You at age 48 when released from the army at the end of the war: "WTF BRO!"

@@lionfromthenorth4580 Thanks!
This is from the Carolus Rex album, so it was before Tommy's Time. Thobbe is playing guitar.
This was recorded with the original Sabaton line up, so before Tommy, Thobbe, Chris and Hannes

I think they used Latin because it matched the international (Latin) name Gustavus Adolphus.
I'm glad, 'cause Latin sounds so cool 😎
... and as a side effect, the chorus is virtually the same in the Swedish version of the song.
You should check out Carolus rex and Gott mit uns from the same album. En livstid i krig (live) is also a must. Just remember to put subtitles on.
Thanks for the recommendation!

I believe Piscator has an English lyric-translation for the Swedish version.
