    Smooth water makes all the predawn activity well worth it and the reflection of the rising sun off the cowling at the end was like a cherry on the sundae!

    Thanks for posting. I am thinking about getting rid of my 98 opti 135 v6 and trying one of these bad boys! Nice whole-shot!

    Its very very good. It does not have quite the hole shot of a DFi V6 two stroke but its pretty good. Watch it accelerate from idle with the the sound off and you'll get a feel for it - 4 strokes sound slow out of the hole (2 bangs per revolution compared to 6 I figure?). We use it for skiing and its great for that. You notice the torque when towing a big guy who digs in hard on a turn as the motor rpm doesn't flinch where Ive seen v6 2 stroke 150's momentarily lose rpm in the same situation.

    I've had one of these on my 18' Nitro bass boat for 2 1/2 years now. I wouldn't replace it for anything.

    75 Etec will have a strong hole shot however I've heard Evinrude guys say the 3 cylinder motors are the least strong of their line up (that's definitely not saying they are bad). The Mercury 75 fourstroke is good but very heavy (181kgs) and the the Yamaha 70 fourstroke is bulletproof and good in pretty much every way but it just lacks a little of that hole shot punch (not sure how important hole shot is to you?). The Honda 75/80 is very strong down low due to having BLAST and runs exactly the same as the 90/100 until higher up in the rev range where it's lack of V-Tec causes it to tail off. Definitely a good 75hp motor to consider from my experience.

    did the motor come with the 4 blade? i am thinking about trying out the new spitfire on my e-tec 150, Merc claims they are just as fast as a 3 blade.

    • @SimonH2O
      @SimonH2O  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      This boat gets loaded up and used for mostly skiing and Ive tried a lot of stainless props on this one (rev 4, laser, vengeance, Hi five etc in varying pitches) and have now settled on a three blade Enertia (18P) - The Rev 4 had too much blade area for this motor - it was a little unresponsive and seemed to lift the stern too much which induced porpoising.
      I haven't used an alloy spitfire on this motor but did on a smaller 30hp which worked well. If your budget will stretch to a stainless prop the Enertia seems to be a great all rounder.

      Also the BRP props are very good.

    Hey Simon would you reccommend this motor over a 150 Pro XS for skiing and barefooting at 40- 43 mph. I'm considering getting rid my inboard skiboat and getting an alrounder is all. You advice is appreciated.

    • @SimonH2O
      @SimonH2O  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there. As much as the I'm a fan of Fourstroke motors, for punch and hole shot in skiing applications it's really hard to go past a DFi two stroke engine and the Optimaxs are tried and tested - particularly the 2.5L150's as that motor has been around forever. For skiing the Suzuki 150 Fourstroke pulls really well due to the offset drive shaft (it's the best 150hp Fourstroke for skiing in my opinion). That might be an option for you? The Merc 150 Fourstroke is great in every way, it's just a little slow out of the hole when pulling skiers.

    • @SimonH2O
      @SimonH2O  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi I don't own this motor anymore as I moved it on however I know the new owner has had zero issues with it. I also know of a few people that run these engines in commercial applications and they also have had no problems. Speaking to a Mercury dealer the other day he also said he has seen no mechanical warranty issues with the 150. They are a rock solid motor.

    83 KPH = 51.5 MPH.
    What style hull and length is the boat?
    I have a 17 ft. V hull (with a pad) fish & ski boat (not a little, lightweight bass boat),
    with an old 1988 Merc XR4 150hp 2 stroke (premix, 2.4 liter), and get about the same speed, at 5000 RPM with a 22" prop.

    not fast enough, you should be hitting at least 50 knots, it's a small boat. Try a 21P 3 bladed prop and raise motor at least one hole.

    • @SimonH2O
      @SimonH2O  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah we did run a 21P Enertia for a while when setting the boat up which gave us another 4-5kph from memory however it really struggled to pull a adult skier out of the water one up (deep water start/single ski). We finally settled on an 18P Enertia and sacrificed some top end however it pulls skiers fine now. The Rev 4 used in this video pulled well however with the stern lift that came with it caused porpoising at low to mid speed.

    • @dpd6401
      @dpd6401 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simon Hall Yeah, there's always a trade-off; I know your pain. I was getting 55 knots but the cavitation was so dangerous I had to drop my motors two pegs and lost almost 5 knots and now the 21P props won't rev past 5600. Props are definitely a science. I like the look of these Mercs, I'd love to have a pair on my boat.

    it pisses me off that envinrude only compares to fucking 4 strokes. i guarantee if they compare an e-tec to an optimax they will get their asses ripped a second asshole... also im sure a verado (which is a 4 stroke )will destroy all envinrudes'.
