Really these high quality quartz watches are simply superior to mechanical watches in every possible way... All they are missing is the prestige of mechanical. I personally derive a fair bit of joy from the mechanical nature of my watches but for pure functionality quartz is superior.
The only thing to consider is the battery/resistor that needs replaced. A mechanical watch is a true machine that can last for many lifetimes. However, I also love high precision quartz. As a tool watch, where the exact second matters, they are unparalleled. Tight and precise.
@@Dr.Randy.Butternubs “Many lifetimes” is debatable. You’re eventually going to run into a Ship of Theseus situation once you’ve replaced enough parts. Aside from that, lifetime maintenance costs for many mechanicals will exceed the cost of the watch itself, to the point where many would argue it’s not worth getting a mechanical under $1,000 because that’s how much you’re going to pay even for cheap maintenance through most people’s lifetime.
I hope they continue to iterate and improve on this series. Been meaning to pick up the previous version, but now I’m undecided. Really wish they made the current version in titanium, but the steel does look very good anyway.
It never ceases to amaze me the sheer amount of bang per buck the Oceanus line has, not to mention the beauty of these watches (yeah... I admit, I'm a sucker for anything blue...). My grail watch still is and will probably remain a Grand Seiko with SpringDrive movement, but Oceanus definitely will be right next in line... And to be completely honest, I could probably be happy with an Oceanus as my only watch for a loooong time.
Nick got me into Oceanus. I started with this one and then bought the S5000 Manta, and most recently, I bought the P2000. Amazing watches for the money. The Zuratsu finishing is right up there with GS.
Just beautiful. I will pull the trigger on this one, my first quartz. Excellent review. Also, it is now available on Amazon for 432.00. Gotta love the bluetooth...just in case the fools in charge stop the Denver radio.
I own one. May only downside, is I no longer have the manual and I forget the cookie-pookie steps necessary to manually set the watch(yes, I know, use the Bluetooth app). Love the watch, wish they'd make it in titanium.
My dream watch. I've been a Casio fan boy for approximately 2 months and been into watches for about the same time although I've worn a paw-1500 for 8 years now. I've never noticed how cool watches really are!
Nick, I have to post a thank you for this also. The Oceanus filled an important gap in my small collection. I tend to be a huge fan of JDM watches to start with, and while I had a great main watch, travel watch, and backup watch, I wasn't completely happy with my dress watch (Seiko SARB 035). The SARB was beautiful, reliable, durable, and reasonably accurate (actually I'd say amazingly accurate for a mechanical watch that cost me under $400) if I wore it constantly, but it I took it off and wound it to keep it powered, it needed to be reset more than once per week, and the lume just wasn't all that great. Enter the Oceanus T200 (my version has the grey dial and came on a leather strap). This is dress watch perfection for someone who loves JDM quartz watches and actually expects their dress watch to be pretty much as functional as their other watches. I bought this watch based largely (though not quite completely) because of your reviews (I would never have known the Oceanus line even existed if it weren't for you), and I really love this watch. So thanks, your info helped me make a great purchase that I'm now in love with.
Thanks Nick. Mine just arrived today. Synced up to the phone and it's ticking right along. It's going to be so nice not to fiddle with my watch when the plane lands. The inner AR coating is very effective. The weight is so good I'm glad they didn't add the expense of Titanium. Love the look, wearability and functionality. It gets a 10/10 from me but I'm not so picky as some.
I recently decided to give up on mechanical watches as, unfortunately, the cost and time to service them has gotten to great. I was recently quoted $575 and 5 weeks to do a regular service and regulate basic ETA 2895-2 movement. The watch only cost $700 when new. Quartz movements for me from now on and the next analog watch is likely to be a Casio Oceanus T200.
I gotta say half of my love of your video reviews is your voice, and I absolutely cracked up at the 8:26-8:45 mark, "$500 bucks for a quartz watch, you bourgeois bastard..." - coffee straight through nose...

Yep. This is an excellent watch. All the downsides of the bracelet (and weight) can be solved by taking the bracelet off and using a [leather/nylon/cordura/rubber/silicon/whatever] strap of your choosing. The watch head itself is really light, it's mostly the bracelet that's heavy.
Nick, you've sold me! I had my eye on this, the S100, and a few other options as my next watch. This looks like The One! You raised an interesting point on what Casio's capable of. I bet they would knock a Spring Drive-type movement out of the park!
Awesome watches like this remind me of that simpler time when one watch did everything I needed. But no time to reminisce, gotta go down to the vault and pick out a piece to wear for work today, something dressy but not pretentious, with perhaps a playful touch of sportiness, and complements my tie but doesn't distract. And then for the afternoon...
I live in Germany and recently sent my S100 to Casio repair service in Hamburg because I bought it used and had some small issues. The repaired the module the crown and the gasket for 120$ which I find it's a good price. So service won't be any problem.😉
I have Rolexes, Cartier, IWC etc. I bought this because I live in Mexico City and you can be invited to depart from your watch in any corner. I didn’t expect much more than a practical watch. Boy was I surprised. This is not accurate, it is the perfect time every second of the year because it updates with the satellite or your phone. It has perpetual calendar. It can let you find your phone by using the button in the watch. It is beautiful; just stunning. It’s the best watch I’ve had.
I've had/ this watch for about a year now. It has become my EDC/travel watch. To deal with summer heat causing my wrists to swell I've put it on a blue FKM rubber strap. I'm barely seeing any scratches on this watch, except for the stamped clasp, which I suspect is made from a softer steel. This is all the watch anyone *needs*, so buy this one and then quit 😉 At the moment (September 2022) the US$/Yen exchange rate is very favorable so get one now.
Been seriously contemplating this watch for a while now. Do you know of any real competitors to it? I haven't really found any, without dipping into nearly $1000 watches or more, or full-on smart watches. As a truck driver, this kind of watch is so ridiculously perfect it makes it almost impossible to justify anything else. I'm just wondering if there's any options that might look either a little less dressy, without going for a GShock.
It is really a beautiful thing what Casio is able to do for 500$.. if it was another name on the dial, quite sure the price would have been substantially higher and maybe the fit and finish wouldn't have been where Casio has taken it. Hundred percent a gem!!👌👌
Hi Nick, if you could only have the T200 or the S100, which would you personally keep in your collection? Btw, thank you for reviewing these great watches.
I know I’m a year late, but I have had both for awhile. I think that if I HAD to choose, I’d still take the S100 over the T200. It’s lighter and more comfortable, and even though I can’t change out its straps I never really found myself wanting to. I find it more comfortable than ANY other watch I own including “luxury watches”
Great vid, thanks for good dirt on a lovely watch. But, two things: It can be argued that pinned bracelets don’t come loose where some screwed bracelets will AND I love that color. It looks almost copper or bronze. Please comment on it.
I believe the S100 is actually more universally sized than the T200, the T200 is actually 41.4mm, which is on the larger side, and the 49.5mm lug-to-lug is extreme for anything under 17". The Smaller S100 would still look good on 90% of wrists. The newer addition this year (yes, 6 years on), the manta is double the price of both of these, but has by far the most wearable dimensions at 39~41mm case and 46.5mm lug-to-lug.
I really like a couple of the Oceanus series but would prefer something different from the blue tints/glows/effects. What about simple no colour version
@@ecureed S100. And I downloaded clock wave app so regardless of where I am I can receive an atomic time signal using my phone. It had to be the titanium 👍
Hey Nick, why no put it on your wrist? The 48-49mm lug-to-lug seems a little tricky for my smaller (6.5inch) wrist. An impression would be appreciated...
I've got a couple of Titanium watches. They tend to scratch more than steel, something to consider. Just ordered one on Amazon. Thanks for the great review Nick.
I have an ecodrive titanium, and to be honest, I feel they scratch easier than steel watches. The problem of steel watches is where you have polished surfaces, the brushed ones held up better than polished areas
As far as I can tell, T200 is in the "basic" or classic line of Oceanus (anything starting with OCW-T is), while models starting with OWC-S (also referred to as Manta) are the "premium" line of Oceanus with more features and/or better materials. So I would not consider T200 to be a sequel to the S100. This would also explain the cheaper steel bracelet on the T vs titanium on the S. There's also a G line (with GPS) and a P line (not sure what the theme is). M line used to be a thing (from when they introduced multi-band radio perhaps?).
I own the original and love it and it was going to be the last watch I ever bought...until I saw this review. Damn! What a beauty. Would it be wrong to buy this watch even though I don't need it? Great review.
The BT will work for most people. But there are still some of us that can't carry BT at work. But if Casino could ditch the BT and add GPS sync, it would be a winner in my opinion !
@@thomash4578 not sure how there lineup works but they have them listed on japen online store under oceanus there's 3 pages of oceanus variations i was quite surprised at the amount they had, from memory there were 3 gps models listed

I really don’t understand why Casio and Citizen release their newest and best stuff to only the Japanese market. They must be aware of the popularity of their products around the globe. I just don’t get it.
Amazing watch! I own myself another Oceanus model and I confirm they are really great watches. However, I found that it is getting less and less wrist time for one reason only: I love the fluidity of the second hand on mechanical watches compared to the clicky rotation on quartz watches. Other than this second hand question, I am enjoying all the features that the quartz movement is allowing and so, wondering if by any artificial mean, quartz watch designers could simulate the fluid rotation found on mechanical watches for the second hand?
Check out the Seiko VH31 movement. It’s a so called mecha-quartz movement that combines quartz regulation with a mechanical sweep hand. I have a nice little Escapement Time three-hander with the movement and it’s a very nice effect. Seiko also makes chronograph mecha-quartz movements. They are really great with a nice snap-back chrono hand instead of the typical slow reset of a quartz chrono.
Side by side views are VERY helpful, thank you. I like the looks of the S100 more. I thought a cleaner dial with no "tought mvt." would be satisfying but not really. The color of the dial and shape of the bevel on the S100 are much more pleasing to my eye. Once again, thank you for helping me to lighten my wallet sir :D
Sir. By the time you need to change the battery of the watch. Does it need to be sent to japan for the servicing? I was wondering, since it is a JDM version then maybe servicing the watch may need special equipment and parts found only in japan.
Nick, just saw there is an app - Clockwave - that allows iPhones to simulate radio atomic clocks. May be worth checking out if WWV closes. ( i don’t want that- grew up in Ft Collins)
I'm a simple guy so I like this one even better than the ocw-s5000. It's so easy to read. My main complaint is that the crystal shows dirt to easily. Wish it had a the ocw-s5000's double curved crystal
Yes it does. Better than that, the atomic clock signal keeps the date updated. It’s literally a set it(just your time zone really) and forget it watch.
The perpetual calendar complication is built into the quartz module, the date will adjust correctly even without bluetooth and Radio atomic clock signal.
Thanks for the review. Now I know that I`ll buy the S100. Going from titanium to steel is a massive downgrade. It did not need to be bigger. The design of the T200 is a bit vanilla(OP homage). Where I live the radio signal will still be going when the BT app is dead tech. The ability to change straps on the T200 is nice, but in reality I never put my watches that are on a bracelet on a different strap.
Hi Nick, I had to watch this a second time, even funnier!! I was just wondering if your thoughts were still the same on these, which you prefer, the Titanium or the Stainless steel? Thanks again for the videos!
Totally uninterested without the titanium. Shame, seems like it fixed a lot of the issues of the previous model, but that's a massive step back given the price.
As long as it doesn't functionally damage the watch, I like the way titanium scratches up with use. It's kinda like blue jeans and old leather; better with wear. I guess if you like to keep everything looking new it's not as ideal.
How is your S100 5 years later, I think this watch will last at least a good 20 years without servicing and, by that time, may only require a capacitor change, which can be done by yourself
it has to be the s100.. better hands.. and titanuim. just love the s100.. and for a 7 inch wrist.. that lug length is a tad big.. besides that the s100 is just better. the domed crystal makes the s100 look bigger, so its smaller but looks bigger... both are nice..
Only thing I don't like is the badging . Why is Casio below the model/range. It should be on top. With applied letters. Then maybe the Oceanus or the wave logo. Maybe just the logo. Otherwise the watch is great. Case looks amazing function like a gshock. Pure class
Nearly a perfect watch. Arguably the best quartz watch out there for that price range. Is it expensive? Hell no! Not for the quality! In my view the watch could cost 1500 and that would still be reasonable. (It offers more than most luxury watches.) My only minor quibble with it is a rather plain, somewhat flimsy-looking back. The "Casio" logo on the dial is superfluous. "Oceanus" is quite sufficient.
You persuaded me to get this watch and i’ve loved it everyday since. Thank you, Nick!

@@ecureed I absolutely love mine, couldn't be happier, and honestly get compliments on it almost everyday I wear it :D
@@jivadaya6439 good to know, I ordered mine last night, so excited to get this one!
@@ecureed Sweet! Everyone has different tastes but I do hope you enjoy it
$500 for paragraph of specs on this Oceanus, people will complain that its quartz. $10000 for a fifth of the specs and that's "prestigious". Hilarious
BuT mEcHaNiCaL = sOuL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great looking watch, with awsome qualities. Would love this with a digi screen, ala the Aerospace
@5:42 and @8:24- classic Shabazz - "and that's a great thing!"
@0:58 and @6:38 oceanus flex
@9:08 helpful comparison of 100 and 200
I genuinely can't decide between this or the s100
"It's not a smart watch but it's not as dumb as some." 🤣🤣
Priceless...
Great review, thanks!
Love your reviews! That 'criminal cartoon voice' is a great trademark you have! lol. I guess the adjusment of the WT will be clean using the app.
Loved the review, very thorough in details!
Thanks for the great review, Alan Alda!
Was this guy Kripke on the Big Bang Theory ?
Given everything this watch can do, not to mention the finishing and design, $500 isn't too bad.
Are you sure the second hand is adjustable within one second for alignment purposes? It's normally only in one second increments with Casio.
Hey nick, Not sure where a good spot to ask this is, but what size clasp did you put on the Seiko Samarai? I'm looking to get one, it seems excellent.
I would wear that watch it's very nice watch ,Idolize older version better I have small wrists I tend to buy smaller watches
Your one minute video got me to want to buy watches everytime, great videos.
Finally.. I have found perfection!
I am so sick. I am about to spend $4,500 on an omega aqua terra when this $500 watch is absolutely all i ever need. I am crazy. I hate this hobby.
I'm a simple guy so I like this one even better than the ocw-s5000. It's so easy to read. My main complaint is that the crystal shows dirt to easily. Wish it had a the ocw-s5000's double curved crystal
I'm not a nato strap kinda person, not sure if thats a good or a bad thing?
Of the three watches in the video, I prefer this T-200, especially in terms of appearance.
The hands on this are really cool. Like mini katana.
'Oceanal retentive' LOL love it
That blue dial and chapter ringnis gorgeous. Daddy like.
does the date adjust at the end of months with 30 days? it seems like it should with the Bluetooth sync.
First Oceanus model came out in 2004 - long before the S100. Over time, most Oceanus watches have subdials.
Hi Nick, I had to watch this a second time, even funnier!! I was just wondering if your thoughts were still the same on these, which you prefer, the Titanium or the Stainless steel? Thanks again for the videos!
Nick, if you like R/C watches, check out the Junghans Mega.
That dial is SO PRETTY
Totally uninterested without the titanium. Shame, seems like it fixed a lot of the issues of the previous model, but that's a massive step back given the price.
Steel is more durable and hefty, an improvement for me.
Titanium is durable enough for me. Not sure why one would ever want a watch to weigh more.
@@cloudcleaver23 Titanium scratches easily compared to steel. I prefer watches with some weight. Light watches feel cheap to me.
As long as it doesn't functionally damage the watch, I like the way titanium scratches up with use. It's kinda like blue jeans and old leather; better with wear. I guess if you like to keep everything looking new it's not as ideal.
Looking at any new watch brands? Well, ones you haven't reviewed before?
When my S100 dies, or my other watch dies, I will grab one of these for sure!
The s100 will live for eternety. :)
How is your S100 5 years later, I think this watch will last at least a good 20 years without servicing and, by that time, may only require a capacitor change, which can be done by yourself
@ Yeah, still going strong, best watch I’ve bought so far value wise. Incredible really. Radio still works too!
it has to be the s100.. better hands.. and titanuim. just love the s100.. and for a 7 inch wrist.. that lug length is a tad big.. besides that the s100 is just better. the domed crystal makes the s100 look bigger, so its smaller but looks bigger... both are nice..
Really nice looking Casio Oceanus lv the design of the overall watch❤️⌚⌚⌚❤️🏴
Only thing I don't like is the badging . Why is Casio below the model/range. It should be on top. With applied letters. Then maybe the Oceanus or the wave logo. Maybe just the logo. Otherwise the watch is great. Case looks amazing function like a gshock. Pure class
Nice looking watch, great review 👍
How do I find the closest repeater to my home?
Nearly a perfect watch. Arguably the best quartz watch out there for that price range. Is it expensive? Hell no! Not for the quality! In my view the watch could cost 1500 and that would still be reasonable. (It offers more than most luxury watches.) My only minor quibble with it is a rather plain, somewhat flimsy-looking back. The "Casio" logo on the dial is superfluous. "Oceanus" is quite sufficient.
Thought you were gonna bring out a delica lol
Blue or black dial? Some say blue n some say black. Am totally confused.
Excellent video, thank you very much.
