    Glad to see you uploading a lot again!
    I'm lucky, my parents let me use a closet for my servers, even though its only 6x10', it barely gets warm with the door closed.
    I don't have to worry about noise that way.

    Very nice. The Xeon 2600v3 series processors offer significant potential upgradability should you need additional processing power. Some boards even offer potential upgradability to v4 processors (I've recently dealt with needing to borrow a v3 processor just for the necessary BIOS upgrades for this). Definitely a fine bit of future proofing for your production stuff, particularly since these processors have dropped pretty nicely in cost on the used market.

    I bought 12Tb Exos drives for my Synology because they were cheaper than Ironwolfs. I will note that they are quite loud having set it up in my office but now it’s returned to the wiring cabinet on the other side of the house so I don’t have to hear it anymore.

    I know on Amazon (in the US) the EXOS drives are substantially cheaper than the ironwolfs also. It seems to be a consistent thing. I bought a few ironwolf 16tbs before I realized this and i'm kicking myself about it since they were outside the return period on Amazon.

    I've watched these server videos over a few times now love them. Wish Mark would do another server chat video. Would like to know what's going on with his set up.

      Same, an update on his hardware/software config would be amazing. Did he end up getting a rack in the end? guess we'll never know.

    The rear HD's get hot and styay pretty hot - have you thought about a way to fight that? I've wondered if I add fans to the outsid blowing air out of the 847 if that would help.

    Thanks Mark for the video and congratulations with your upgrade. Just a question do you do zfs replication for backup and if so how do you control or know when the replication is finished so you can shutdown the backup server afterwards?
    I myself is in the process of changing from rsync to zfs replication but struggle to find out when the process is finished so that is why I am still using rsync even though it is inferior to zfs replication guess. Any idea where to look? (background: I am using FreeNAS)

      I wrote a tool for this many years ago. github.com/TheUbuntuGuy/offline-zfs-backup It is designed for Linux, but I was able to port it to FreeBSD for a TrueNAS installation recently. I may publicly upload the changes to the projects so they can be compatible on BSD.

    Hey Mark, greetings from Milton. Where do you find these things at halfway reasonable prices? I come across 1 and 2u machines and cases but I’m hoping to find a 20 bay or more.

    Im using an old school Windows xp era case for my Server, I did have other junk cases I pulled the drive cages out of it and I installed them into that case, 1 with screws and nuts, the other had no choice to use zip ties, I also got a 5.25" bay adapter for 3 3.5" inch drives, Its kind of a mess, Im still looking for and older case, though not a rack case, but something that has a bit more cable management, something that just don;t feel as janky, I had a massive Coolermaster HAF case which would of worked, but the thing was like 4 foot tall, a lot of room in places I didn't need the room at lol

    I have the Supermicro 847-12, and am wondering where to find a SATA power connector to put an internal SSD so that I don't have to use up one of the drive bays for boot disk.

Just need to work out how to flash h710 mini's into IT mode.guess that will be a long day tomorrow. anyway hope your well,

    Exos are louder the IronWolves. If you have NAS in your living space and not in separate room then it is not ideal to use Exos drives.

    • @TheUbuntuGuy
      @TheUbuntuGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Louder yes, more power, no. They are helium filled and the datasheet clearly shows lower current draw in all active states because of this. Datacenters want lowest power.

    • @TheOscylO
      @TheOscylO 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheUbuntuGuy You are correct. For 16TB drives idle is 5W for Exos, IW Pro and IW. For Exos Max power consumption is 10W and for IW Pro and IW Seagate only published in datasheet an average power consumption of 7.6W. So its not apples to apples comparison. I do agree that for server applications low power consumption is required but not only low per se but low for work accomplished. By which I mean faster drive can require more power.

      Yeah we are really placing servers in our livingroom, not in a separate room. /s
      And you'd be crazy to buy ironwolf when exos is way cheaper.

      make sure you get something with a board that supports upgrading to the Xeon E5-2600v4 series processors for potential upgrades, as they offer higher max core counts and significantly improved thermal efficiency compared to the v3 series. It's perfectly fine to start running on the v3 and upgrade later once the prices drop even further, but with DDR3 ECC becoming increasingly rarified since the widespread adoption of DDR4 memory back in, what, 2014, the shift over to DDR4 ECC memory is becoming increasingly necessary for future maintenance.

      Depends on what your needs are and the cost of power in your area. Intel Xeons with their C-states left enabled can be fairly power efficient when not under heavy load. The space aspect is still valid, though, but there's really only so small you can reasonably get with that number of disks in play. In this case, you can save about $500 or more by going with a full-depth server chassis as opposed to something smaller. If you don't need that number of drives or you're willing to spend more upfront for your enclosure, you can totally pick up some of the smaller tower fileserver chassis that use mITX boards and those little ATX format PSUs with redundant PSUs inside them. It just costs more to do so.
