Shimano Stella vs Vanquish (vs Daiwa Exist) - 1 Year Reel Review

- A review is not a review until you've actually...used the gear. One year seems like the appropriate testing period for this pair of reels. The Stella and Vanquish sits atop Shimano's lineup of spinners, and they are almost polar opposites in terms of design philosophy. Daiwa's flagship Exist is also considered in this video.

Thanks for the after season review! Just something about a vanquish. One of the only reels I actually purchased a spare spool for.
Yeah I was very surprised by its performance - probably the best all around spinning reel I've ever used
thanks for sharing another outstanding review!
Thank you!! I appreciate it!
Love the insight and compare! Already have 2 Stella’s don’t make me want another reel
Lol so many reels, so little time
Great review as always. I bought the Vanquish in 4000 size for my sea bass (striper in the US) fishing in the UK and it quickly became the reel I use most. A bit light for my 9'6ft rods but sits great on 9ft rod. Roger I just got the new Shimano 24 Twin Power c3000xg love it too. It would be interesting to see your review of it one day.
Nice!! The new TP definitely on my radar for 2024!
Bought a Vanquish for largemouth/smallmouth, but havent used it yet. This review got me more optimistic about it.
I was interested about your take on the Exsence, because it was one of the reels I was considering before I got the Vanquish at a lower price point. Have you done a more in depth review of the Exsence?
Thanks for the Fantastic video! I l am enjoying the Stella and the Vanquish for the very reasons you mentioned in this review but I still love my Exist! I do also have to mention that only you would say that a Stargazer is your favorite 😂
Haha thanks Dave! May your Exist live long and prosper - and how can anyone NOT pick the stargazer as their favorite bycatch - look at that face!
The best review I've seen so far. I had similar feelings right after buying the Vanquish, but as soon as I caught the first asp, I changed my mind. Now I'm eagerly awaiting the delivery of the new Twin Power. I didn't go for the Stella, as it seems to me that the Twin Power can handle the job. Nevertheless, I'm still tempted to get the Stella and the new Certate - but I need to get a reel to pair with my ultra ligth rod so it seems that I will end up with another vanquish but smaller size
So many reels, so little time to fish them all :)
hey mate, nice comparison video, i just got my stella fk 5000 pair with daiwa saltist hyper v2 spinning rod, haven’t got the chance to try it, hope i made the right choice for my saltwater bottom bashing & some inshore casting…🙏🏽
Love those heavy hooksets. I can also attest to the smooth drag of the vanquish, its a great reel and punches way above its weight.
It definitely does!
Been waiting for this review since the vanquish video drop last year. Awesome. I do notice ur vanquish handle is different from the stock model, I been trying to look for replacement handle for the vanquish 3000 model for the longest time. Not a fan of the T shape handle
Thank you!! I too am not a fan of the T shaped knob, I replaced mine with the Avail Slim EVA knob.
@@CookingandFishing did u replacement the entire handle or were you able to just change the knob only?
@@jayzhang49 Just the knob!
Great review!! Have 2 stellas and 100% agree on the new duracross drag, very noticeable when hooked on a fish 👍🏼
Out of the places a Vanquish is released outside of Japan - New Zealand (no hate just lucky to have it)!! I just hope Shimano Australia introduces it to the Australian Market in the near future!!
Yes!! Hopefully Shimano USA and Aus comes to their senses lol
23 Vanquish is very comfortable to use for Bass fishing❤
Out of my Stella fk, and twin power fd I too gravitate towards my vanquish. Tight lines!
It really is such a perfect little reel - thank you!!
Thanks for the review, this was very informative. I’ve been trying to decide on whether to get the Vanquish or new Twin Power (in 5000 sizes) to handle bigger species in Florida. Not over slot fish, but more of the river sized species between 20-30” (snook/reds). It will be my medium-heavy setup. Do you think the 5000 Vanquish will hold up to these fish or should I go Twin Power? Thanks in advance.
For that application I'm going with the Twin Power, or better yet bite the bullet and get the USDM Stella - you'll probably put that lifetime service to good use.
@@CookingandFishing thank you!
I have a Stella SW. And picked up a 23 Vanquish 3000 while traveling Korea. Paired with a 23Dialuna. Thats what I use as my seabass and halibut reel here in the San Diego area inshore.
Got a Labrax AGS coming, and was gonna pick up a Certate to pair with it. Figured they are perfect match together. Targeting the same species.
But now your review has me rethinking the Certate. Hmmm
Yeah I mean it's all anecdotal, but if I wanted zero headaches I'd just get a USDM Stella to pair to your 9'+ rod and call it a day - platinum service for life.
100% love the feel of the stella. i also use the vanquish more on lighter rod setups. i feel for some reason the shorter design of the certates and exist actually balances some rods a bit better. they are all insanely good reels for sure, can't go wrong. comes down to personal preferences at this point. btw the c2000s vanquish is very fun for UL setups
Yeah we are spoilt for choice these days - thank god both companies exist (no pun intended)
The Cow nose ray are no joke when it gets hooked. They just keep going.
Lol they do...but usually they make just one run parallel to the beach and you have to follow them not stand there watching 200ft of line strip out haha
Very good video. Thank you.
Ty!!!
Man I really wanna get a vanquish to see what the hype is about but I hate that plastic drag noise, which the the main reason I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I don't mind it on the vanfords but I kinda expected better on the Vanquish. The stella sounds similar and the exist imo sounds the best. As of now I am debating really hard to choose that over the exist sf.
What kills it for me is the weight, the 2500xh exist weighs 5.8oz and the Stella 2500hg weighs 7.4oz. That’s definitely a noticeable difference fishing for a few hours.
They are very different reels, that's why I said in the review that the counterpart to the Exist is the Vanquish, not the Stella. Stella's heavy alum rotor really is unique among all high end spinning reels.
@CookingandFishing It's always been Stella vs Exist ;)
@@khnguyen141 People think that bc they're the respective flagship models, but the Stella is a different beast with a different design philosophy. Shimano could easily make the Stella as light or lighter than the Exist, but that's what the Vanquish is for :)
I love it. I wish my wife would let me get it. I am happy with my Abu Garcia Veritas. Your technique is incredible
Thank you!! and LOL re the wife...sometimes it's better to ask forgiveness than permission :)
Hey @3:25 you can really hear the Stella when you’re reeling in. My Stella is also loud just like this too. I wonder why that is? It used to be very quiet. However the overall performance of my Stella has not changed, it has just gotten loud. I’ve had people clean my reel and inspect it and they have all said it looks great and nothing too concerning so I’m not sure why it’s so loud? What are your thoughts? Thanks 🙏
If the actual drag performance is good, I wouldn't worry too much about the acoustics. All that is is a little spring flicking against a clicker...you can remove it entirely and a silent drag system that performs just as well. Having said that, I do prefer the drag sound of the Stella over the Vanquish :)
@@CookingandFishing thank you for the reply. Sounds good 👍 I was debating on sending my reel into shimano to service too but maybe I’ll hold off a bit and save myself a couple bucks for now.
How does it compare to the new certate if you've gotten the chance to fish with it?
I have used my Daiwa 19 Certate in the surf for the last three years with zero issues so far. Never has it been serviced, either. I just got the 2024 Certate. Hopefully, this one will be jusy as durable.
Good luck - I mean it!
How do you feel the differences between the 19 and 24 Certate so far?
My exist need new oil after two years fishing..i’m not a fan of magseal ..
I cant justify buying another reel since I own
the 2500-h 23 Airity, 4000xg 2020 & 2500s Vanquish.
The reels are solid but the Vanquish is just something else. So I share the same sentiment
Yeah like I mentioned in the review, I know guys who have fleets of Vanquishes - I didn't understand before, but I get it now
When start fishing for snook and tarpon the Stella and exists is the way to go!
@@snookerson9292 Stella yes, Exist...nah
Just baught a soare xr s80ul+ and i have a vanford to match it since its a very light rod but i was looking to get a higher end reel. The stella if abit much for me so i was thinking either a vanquish or an airity in 2500 size. Depending on how it feels though i might also look into a certate or twinpower to balance the rod
get a vanquish, the new airity st sf etc still doesnt sniff it. I have a 1000 fk stella and 1000 vanquish for my ultralights and imho vanquish is better. If you want to balance it though get the stella since it weights a little more
I'd get the Vanquish in a heartbeat lol...unless you're only fishing in freshwater, in which case the Airity might be a good option. That rod is probably super light so I wouldn't worry about getting a paperweight for balancing purposes.
I do hate the look of the vanquish but I use it the most out of all my high end shimano!
It's growing on me a bit...but yeah the black/silver scheme and also just the weird sharp angles on the housing...compared to the Daiwa monocoque reels, it's really a shame. But functionally - best spinning reel I've used to date!
18:00 i have nothing good to say about daiwa and saltwater either
i had a ballistic go bad on me from saltwater very fast and when i sent it in under the warranty they just oiled it up and sent it back which it went into the trash not much later
Lol yeah...again, I know people who use their magsealed Daiwas hard in the salt and they claim zero issues, I guess it's the luck of the draw but me personally, Daiwas stay in freshwater
As a certate owner, I unfortunately have to agree that the mag seal just doesn't work in the salt. The mag seal within the roller bearing (or where a roller bearing would go, gets destroyed every month or so of heavier weekend warrior trips. This has me looking at the shimano options.
Just rinse it bro I've had 10+ magsealed reels and it works fine
@@IFeelfishy Yeah man all stuff in saltwater corrodes, just a quick rinse under light tap pressure does the trick. My certates run smooth after 2 years of usage
It's sad bc I love Daiwa's design and drag
@@CookingandFishing Me too man. I already have it, so I will use it until it cant be fixed anymore. By then I'm sure Diawa will have more of the kinks worked out. Or you will have more videos showing better options!! keep up the informative videos, I love them!
The new certate finesse custom models have no magseal bearings in the linerol
What handle/handle is that? Dont the 3000 models for the Vanquish come in a paddle knob
It's an Avail slim EVA knob
What model vanquish do you have? I do mostly pier and bank fishing for pomps, flounder, sheeps, reds here in Texas using 10-15 lb line. Which vanquish model is a good fit?
Great honest review
@@abrahamjoseph6707 It depends on the rod you're using, but the 3000MHG is a good all around size - 4k body/gearing, 3k rotor/spool - will fit 7' freshwater rods as well as JDM seabass rods up to 9'6ML etc.
So would you rather have a 5k stella for stripers than a 5k vanquish?
both are too small but gun to my head - Stella all the way.
Super recenzja
Thank you!!!
Unfortunately, someone stole one of my vanquish reels. So sad.
What!? Death is too lenient a sentence!
my exist sf 2500 good so far only fish in salt.. no magseal ... i catch bass and bonefish with it and cuda and bonito ect...
Nice!!! I guess that's an option if I really wanted to use a Daiwa in the salt lol
@@CookingandFishing i been using shimano's for decades 0 issues wanted to see how this exist sf will do.. i can make a cheap freshwater reel last on saltwater you just have to know how to care for your stuff... my buddies got some mid range reels and not even a year they already having bearing issues lol... all about how you care for your stuff
You just cant go wrong with Shimano. Daiwa is excellent too
I agree - those 2 are it when it comes to freshwater sized spinning reels.
Vanquish for the win. Kinda lame its jdm only, but it's my new goto reel. I have all the previous 3 generations of Exist and the Stella FK, FJ. Yup i spent way too much money on gears.
Yeah it's the most functional spinning reel I've ever used - checks every box
I love my certate more than my exist
Not too much a fan of shimano in the smaller sizes
I like both, but as I explained in the video...salt + magseal...no bueno, for me anyway.
👊🙏👍
Couldn’t disagree more about your opinion on the daiwas been using various mag seal models since they came out. Use predominantly in saltwater never had a problem ever .
Well, we all make purchasing decisions based on experience, and ours certainly differ.
I love me Stella fk and just got my Twinpower FE. I don’t need another reel.
Lol "need" is a strong word...
I met a fisherman who used to fish a Stella 22 FK, He showed me the vanquish 23 1000ssspg and said its better to fish with than a stella, I laughed at him. Ive heard time and time again that once you buy a vanquish you buy the next one. After watching several reviews and looking at Daiwa Arities and Exists, I purchased a 1000 vanquish. I am using it more than my stella FK22. I am super happy with it. Ugly reel compared to the Stella and Exist but It is by far the most functional spinning reel on the market. Hopefully the next Stella will put in all the good things as they did in the vanquish. Ive heard the new exist is coming out soon but I still believe currently the Vanquish is king. Will do the job better than an Exist for almost half the price...
The Stella 22FK I find is smoother and more durable than the Vanquish. The Stella can be slightly better for High speed retrievals. Shimano use surface treatment on the gears in the Stella. But the Vanquish is the more functional and better for BFS. That winding startup inertia, slow oscillation really makes a massive difference when finesse fishing. Really Does cast further than an Exist and Stella too
Many people are having problems with Daiwa magseal as they are removing it from certain places like the roller bearings to make their reels lighter and smoother. (Also selling it for the same price or more) Positive side MQ body is more water proof and you don’t have to handle small screws. Down side is even if you have the socket tool that you need to buy to open the MQ body, you cant buy Magseal from anywhere ,you have to send it to Daiwa. Using other magfluid lubricants or grease will void your Daiwa warranty but also doesn’t work as well. So off to Daiwas terrible service department. Also Daiwa lied with the new Airity ST and SF. The 1000 SF is a size 500 reel body with a size 1000 spool to make the Airity 10g lighter than the Vanquish 1000. The Vanquish is a true 1000 in spool and body and handles bigger fish than the Airity. I really think Shimano are slightly ahead of Daiwa and miles ahead with their pricing and servicing of their reels. That being said Daiwa can make a comeback in future.
Here in Australia Shimano give us the crumbs... They really need to Bring the Vanquish to USA and Australia...
If you want the Reel for Finesse Fishing you will be very very impressed by the Vanquish.
Wow - what a stellar write-up! Thank you! And yes I would have to agree with all your points re Shimano/Daiwa, as much as I'm a fan of Daiwa's designs they fall short in some key ways. Here's to hoping both Shimano USA and Aus comes to their senses and give us the Vanquish!
@@CookingandFishing Can't thankyou enough for uploading this video. A very unbiased and intelligent review!
Big fan of Shimano, Megabass and Daiwa, have been using their reels for years. Have picked up a few things over the years, seen and heard things about all kinds of Gear in tackle shops.
How great is it when tackle companies give you what you want and what works? Here's to hoping brother! Tight lines champ!
@@samasim3944 Thank you!!!
I own three Stellas two SW and one 4000FK ,I’ve been a Shimano fan since my childhood and I still have to find a spinning reel that feels or performs better than Stella ,the only reel I take with me most of the time is the Stradic 1000HG just because of how light it is,not even to mention how smooth it feels and yet it doesn’t compare to Stella in anything except in weight
@@fisherman1353 The stradic is a kids reel compared to the vanquish... If I was high speed jigging or popping for GT or Tuna I would pick a Saltiga or Stella SW or other reels especially for line capacity, they don't make 8000 Vanquish but if they did it would still do the job... The vanquish is the new and improved Stella FK... I have a Stella FK and SW, Saltiga and a Dogfight, Maxel transformer, Maxel rage... None of which I would use for every day fishing all bullet proof reels but heavy and cumbersome to use... I can still catch big fish with the vanquish for my everyday fishing... I have used my saltiga dog fight a handful of times. Haven't put down the Vanquish since I've purchased it... I've put the same braid on my Shimano Cardiff are considered higher end reels in the stradic family. I don't consider the Shimano Cardiff anywhere in the class of a vanquish even if you fully decked the Cardiff with Shimano yumeya exclusive parts to make it lighter and smoother. I have a Cardiff fully decked out with yumeya exclusive parts and even then it still isn't as light or as functional because it doesn't have any of the new 23 or 24 Shimano spinning reel technologies included.
