Speaker Driver Replacement

  • Drivers--sometimes called "speakers"--produce the sound in your speaker system. Sometimes they go bad due to defects, age or even abuse. Such was the case with these Realistic Nova-6 speakers. The tweeters had failed. After a number of conversations with Parts Express, it seemed that the best replacement they could offer was the Dayton Loudspeaker Co. #275-055 titanium dome tweeter.
    From what I have read, Radio Shack's Realistic Nova series speakers are generally well regarded. The surround on the woofers also appears to be very robust. Despite their dated looks, I would certainly recommend them.
    A Technics SH-4020 "audio timer" makes a cameo appearance in this video. This is basically a glorified electric timer that can turn a stereo system on or off at a prescribed time. Since a simple light timer could do the same for a lot less money, these aren't terribly common units. This one supports worldwide voltages, 50/60 cycle correction and uses 24 hour time.
    The receiver driving the Realistic speakers in this video is an Optimus STA-795.

    I have a pair of these that I've never had to replace or repair. I bought them at a yard sale in 2004 so I've had them for 8 years. They are the really great speakers and they seem to last a long time.

    Bought the same speakers for $20. they looked perfect and the surrounds looked perfect. When turned up a little I started hearing a loud popping noise out of one of the speakers on hard bass notes. I watched the speaker closely and saw that a split in the surround showed up on the hard bass punches. They look perfect when at rest but you can see the split if you really focus on watching the surround. I am replacing both the woofers and the tweeters from some Daytons from Parts Express.

    Nice work. And looks like another piece of equipment followed you home...
    I would also like to maybe see a video in the future on re conning, that would be interesting.
    These speakers are pretty odd looking, very very 70's, but they are good looking in their own type of way,

    perhaps you mis-spoke or I mis-heard. you say the new twtr range starts at 5K Hz. With the XO @ 4K, you'd have a response dip between 4k and 5K Hz. Actually, twtr 275-055 freq response is listed @ 3K Hz and up. Its Fs is ~1600; a single capacitor (as the XO) will provide a 6 dB slope. A general guideline for such designs would be to set the XO point to be twice the twtr Fs to insure protection from lower freqs it can't produce. Good job and enjoy.

    another thing to watch out for. is if someone has been working on a speaker. and if they didn't have it hooked up correctly. its a good chance they didn't know what they were doing.and it would be a good idea to check the speaker specs. and try to determine if they had removed any insulation and replace it correctly.I found some of those once.and if you have built your own custom speakers before like i have.and it looks like you may have. you can tell something is wrong.as soon as you hear them

    The Advent /2, /3, and /4 series of speakers use the exact same woofer. The quantity and quality of the bass is so good I find I don't need a sub.

    do you remember if the yellow wire goes to the positive or negative terminal of the 8 inch speaker?

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately I do not. If you have a multimeter with a continuity test range, you can backtrace the wiring and find out for sure.

    Those cabinets aren't much different from my old MC-1201's. I experimented with them for years,
    eventually replacing all of the drivers and crossovers with new ones from Radio Shack until I was happy.

    How do most tweeters connect? Are there clips or is there any soldering involved? I'm about to replace the tweeter in a Polk Audio CSi3 center speaker.

    I tried the light timer on a radio once and it ended up blowing the radio or they both blew so I wasn't sure about the light timer thing. Did I do something wrong?

    Any good links to some good places to find new replacement speakers?

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Parts Express is a good place to start. They have individual speaker drivers and complete speaker systems for any budget. If you want to repair your existing speakers with an exact part...sometimes you can get lucky on eBay.

    I just got a pair of RS Nova 5 speakers from an antique store for $15. They look just like yours. I hooked them up to an old Panasonic amp/receiver/record player unit and they sound good.
    I have a pair of Boston speakers too.
    They have way more bass. I use a Fisher amp for those though. Maybe that’s why...

    Is the tweeter the driver. What's meant by speaker drivers ?

    • @armanelgtron4533
      @armanelgtron4533 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Speaker drivers are the speakers themselves. If you need a better explanation, search the internet.

    Terry Stafford, the English sounding Elvis. You must be 30 something, that makes two of us. Anyways, got a buzz in my pc left channel from accidentally having my volume up too high, and landing on some YT site that had their music way high. Will check out the Dayton Loudspeaker Company. Thank you.

      I do my electronics on the bed too, nowhere else to work on them and the bed is ideal for turntable work where the TT needs to be bottom up
