    I would like to have seen an explanation of adjusting the length of the tail gut as well.

    Does the string afterlength (the distance between the bridge to the tailpiece) matter? Some say it has to be the 1:6 ratio while others say that it is not as critical. Also, does the bridge feet always have to sit in the middle of the f- hole notches? Or is it more important to make the string length 69 cm, for example? Thanks for your help!

    This was a literal lifesaver, one of the screws on the tailgut vibrated itself loose and started rattling
    Im pretty far out from the next luthier and the maker of my cello so i had to figure it out on my own

    Dear Edgar, thank you for a great video ! What do you think about harp style tailpieces and carbon fiber tailpieces ? Thank you very much 🙂

    I am currently changing a violin tailpiece
    so great timing!!!. I am also curious about adjusting the tail gut lenth in order to get the angle over the bridge exactly perfect and the distance from the bridge to the tail piece one sixth (5.46 cm) of the active string lenth (32.8 cm).
    Great job on the video!!!!

    Hi Edgar Russ, the tailgut "multifiber braided cable Bois d'harmonie hightech" really improves the sound of the Akusticus tailpiece? It comes with a steel one 🤔... Thank's a lot. Regards

    Hi Mr.Russ I have a question.the distance ratio between bridge to tailpiece on violin was 1/6 of bridge to fingerboard nut. Is it also same on Cello and Viola?

    Another great video Edgar! I think I have watched all of them now. You are so inspiring. I’m becoming curiously attracted to violin making. I never thought I’d be attracted to anything about the cello but playing it.

    Careful you can drop the SP easily. Getting it reset properly takes great skill and patience. Also proper adjustment of the tail gut length is critical to the set up.

    Edgar, do you have experience with harp tailpiece? Or Zoran Marković tailpiece?

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don´t have experience but for me the impact is far too dramatic. Obvious that everything is changing. And I doubt that it is always to the good.

    Hey edgar, I was wondering if rib height on a cello would affect the sound of the instrument. my cello is a 73.5cm with shorter ribs, alot less than the average heightness of the ribs today.

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably you cello would fit to be a percent 7/8.
      Anyhow too low rib height would slightly effect the sound volume.
      But to be 100% sure I would need to see your cello. If it is wide it might be a great sounding instrument anyway.

    Hi mr Russ, it was helpful but a video comparing how it sounded before and after would have been even better. thank you for sharing all these infos with us. When looking online there are very little tailpiece comparisons on the same cello... regards

    What About Adjusting the length of the tailpiece guts? I mean the distance between the end of the tailpiece to the lower nut?

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very important detail. Read the comment from Terry up here.
      It should be 1/6 of the empty string length of a violin or viola.
      On cello or bass it is less relevant but still gives room to play in case there are heavy wolf tones.

      @@EdgarRuss The 1/6 (~54.6 mm)is very important. But I was asking about the distance between the lower nut and end of the tailpiece (not the fine tuner side). Sorry, for confusion

    Fantastic help, Edgar! You are a generous man. My stand-up bass had a snapped tail-gut and it's very hard to get the instrument to a luthier in NYC. So I did it myself - thanks to you!! Regards to you :)

    Hi. Does the tailpiece matter in matter of sound if it's cheep or expensive?

  • @alexandraboyling148
    @alexandraboyling148 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is a shorter tailpiece better for a slightly small instrument?

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes of course.
      Some tailpieces are definitely too long. Usually tailpieces fro violins are sold in long and short and the difference is about 5mm. I love to take always the shorter ones because give me the ability to adjust it without space restrictions.
      But what counts is actually the tone itself from the tailpiece it should be a very very low A tone of 220 Herz

      Edgar, what do you think about carbon fiber and Wittner tailpieces? Since these are synthetic materials, would these tailpieces enhance the projection of the cello like the Akustikus? I find the Akustikus one of the best in terms of sound, but I don't like its aesthetics; I find it too small and artificial to put on my cello.

    Nice video! I have a question unrelated to it though: Is that a cello with no F holes you have on its side in the background?

      That is the front of the cello, the piece that sticks out is often on the back.

      It is an unfinished 1/2 size cello which I got started to finish for my daughter. But than I was late and I had to make a 3/4.
