  • This thing is showing a lot of promise.
    Episode Four: What started off lightheartedly trended towards introspection, with a dash of confused rambling. I also put the final coffin nail into a nearly-dead motor.
    Early disclaimer: if you're a die-hard Lasernut fan, don't get upset. I don't mean anything I say as an attack. Just try to get across to me why you chose a Lasernut, and what you use it for. I bought mine because it was like 40% off, and I have no idea what to do with it, other than complain about it.

    I Love my Ryft. For the two speed, you need to modify the shift fork and recess the hole in the case a bit. Exocaged has a good how to video. Mine has been flawless since.

    Thanks for this. I didn't know I needed a Ryft in the fleet until now.

    I enjoyed the Ryft so much I upgraded all the links, sway bar, and put a servoaf steering link in the front. Reefs Raw servo. Didn't take long to break both front and rear axle housing. I suspect an upgrade there at some point, because like you said.. it's FUN.

    I have both, and find they have very different application despite both running 2.2 similar wheel base. I drive both tho not how they’re sold.
    My ryft is 4ws, castle mamba censored 1465, 2 speed, with reefs across the boards. I have a brass insert in my front axels as well. It is a crawling monster. People think it’s clunky, then I’m up a 75* face they couldn’t even try.
    And then my lasernut is vitavon across the boards. And I drift it in dirt and asphalt. Straight tire slayer.
    Both are fun. Driving my ryft more crawling a lot.

    this little outrunner sure pack some punch - moves the big RYFT like that - nice

    To be fair to the lazernut, the real Nut has portal axles. And locking diffs. But I don't even think it has finished a King of Hammers event, keeps breaking. Lol the Bomber is the vehicle that should be compared, that is a real King of the Hammers winner!

    I could see the lazernut doing better with some high weight oil in the center diff and just about any oil at the axles lol. Heavier weight oil at the axles on the Ryft or locking them, would improve rock performance I'd guess. There's probably going to a balance between diff oil for rocks and diff oil for flat ground. Maybe another spool out back and something heavier for the front? Cool to see you trying out an outrunner. I have the Holmes V3 Revolver in 1800kv. It does the ultra slow easily and it keeps that bumpability when I need some wheel speed. I have a locally made quiet esc for it, and it has such a smooth, slow startup, I can see and read the labels on the motor as it spins. That's also running on 3 or 4S. Holmes has the new Crawlmaster V2 out and in stock. It specifically says not recommended for two speed vehicles or rock racers, but it might be a fun option to try in one of your crawlers that has an axe or slate combo that'll work in the Ryft. The Revolver I have has that proverbial boat anchor drag brake too. Not much BEC to speak of in these mini, quiet esc's so they'd work best in your rigs with a direct power servo

    Nice comparison. I was interested in the Lasernut a bit until I saw the new Hammer Rey, definitely getting one of those instead.
    Now, after seeing your vid, I think throwing some Lasernut size tires on my 6S Typhon would be equal, if not better and save me a lot of cash over the Nut.

      Arrma would be a much better starting point for an Ultra 4, honestly. I guess Horizon thinks Losi is a bigger name in the category, but... eh. We don't need "race precision" for this kind of rig.

    TH-cam knows I just got a decked out used Ryft. I watch your videos anyway, so these year old ones are popping up lol. Mines decked out w/ billet Vitavon everything, mamba X and a 2500kv Tekin pro hd motor. Thing rips!😂 There’s a whole event series 10min from my house. Looking forward to getting dumb my by bounced😂🤡

    Oh yea! I put the axles off the ryft on my scx10. Blew my mind.

    I uploaded a short video of low speed control with an outrunner to my channel. Sound is on, that's how quiet the HH ESC is.
    The tiny motor improved sidehill performance quite a bit, as well as providing better low speed control and drag brake vs. a 550 brushed.

    Ryft needs spools ASAP. May want to pinion down. You can still get that low crawl smoother. I put Traxxas 20 million in the center of my 'Nut with a Vitavon spur. Running factory motor on 6s with a spectrum 150 amp. Too fast, but so fun.

      I dunno how you magicked that Spektrum 1900kv to not die on 6S. Mine would get into the 160s on 3S, even geared down. It also has the low speed control of a bullet, but that's another topic entirely. I just want to spool the center on the Lasernut, so I might have to bust out the JB Weld.

    You have to throw an outrunner in one of your crawlers. The torque density and the drag brake are ridiculous. A nice bonus is lowering cg on trucks that mount the motor up high. The only drawback is noise-unless you can score a Holmes ESC.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where do you usually shoot for in terms of Kv for running on 3S? The $20 jobbie I bought is a 1450kv, which is I think a bit too spicy, and that's why it doesn't crawl as smooth as I think it could. Something like a 900kv maybe? I have two spare ESCs at the moment, I'm willing to do some experimentation.

    • @FaithSaraG

      @@CrawlerCanyon I like my trucks to be able to go a little faster than I can walk. I also gear them as slow as physically possible and then add motor to get the speed I want. I find this gives me excellent low speed control along with good "bumpability". So the TF2 is running 3.6" tires and 9t/62t 32p gears with 1850kv on 3s. The Element has an Amazon dig gearbox geared 14t/87t 48p, 4.19 tires with 1450kv on 4s.
      I'm thrilled with both setups. Super slow crawling, plenty of wheel speed, unstoppable torque, and a drag brake like you just got stuck on a rock.

    No good turn should go unanswered... And since you're helping me spend my money... Well, I should return the favor, right? As much as you seem to enjoy the Ryft, I say don't cheap out on components! Buy a nice Axe sensored combo, a decent steering servo, and while you're at it, dispense with the cheap ass shift servo and get something that will give you reliability there. Paint up the body panels to make it pretty, and be happy with a really well rounded fun maker.

    You mentioned a plane motor towards the end of this do you fly and or build rc planes as well? Very curious as I started with rc planes and then a crawler

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never flown an RC plane (or plane of any kind for that matter.) It's just that to source cheap outrunners, it's plane or quad motors. The "crawler specific" outrunners get pricy.

    Stop thinking about motors and lock the diffs and then make your choices. It's making me mad watching it not being able to climb. Mine crawls so good my buddy's says it's not fair.
