I just ordered a meerschaum pipe for a friend. It's a vintage pioe. I am going to clean it before giving it to my friend. This video was very helpful. I only have briar pipes for myself and know nothing about meerschaum pipes. Thank you for the instructions.
That sandpaper tip was killer. My best meer had a little build up only in the top half-inch or so of the bowl and didn't smoke as well as when I first got it. I sanded it down so it was nice and smooth again and wow, I'm surprised just removing that little bit of buildup could make such a difference. Excellent suggestion.
Yes you want no cake at all. The meerschaum is poorest and has to breath to filter the tar, moisture, and nicotine out. With cake in the way it can't filter.

Question- Walls are very smooth after the sandpaper. What do you do to get cake out of the bottom of the bowl? I can’t reach it. Ideas?
Hi, is there a way to neutralize the head of a meerschaum estate after scraping it out? You can't go like Bruyere and do it with salt and alcohol.
