Mica on Raku Pottery // First Firing in Raku Kiln

- ***Mistake in video!!! It is grams of mica Not Oz!!*** The first firing in my new Raku Kiln! I show the whole process from throwing the pottery on the potter's wheel to firing the pottery in the kiln. This is the first time I have done terra sigillata (or terra sig) and mica on my pottery when applying horse hair to it. I love how the pottery turned out and I can't wait to explore more colors of mica on the pottery. This is the last raku fire for the season and I will be doing it again when it warms up around March or April.

Very nice ! Your mica inclusions into terra sig created a potassium rich sig , so in reduction you got attic black Ancient Greek pots 🤓👍 nice video ! Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching
nice work! love the results. we discovered the same way I think, :) to put a kin shelf on top of the kiln to warm up before we put the pieces on it to do the horse hair. cold climate Raku is tricky! however it is great for crackle glazes, they love a cold breeze on the way to the reduction chamber...
Yeah cold weather Raku is always a little tricky! 😂
A standing ovation for this brilliance!
Thank you so much!
Really lovely job at documentation and explanation also lovely results.❤
Thanks so much! 😊
I love this kiln! Súper! Beautiful results!
Thanks so much! 😊
Beautiful results!
Thank you!❤️❤️❤️ The mica was crazy, definitely having to do that again!
I would like to ask, if Raku burning process happens when the clay is dry after a week or wet?
Did mean burnishing process with the terra sig? You can do that in the leather hard stage as well but I did it after bisque because the mica added to it can burn off in the bisque fire, depending what temperature you bisque to. If you mean burning the horse hair on to it, that happens after the first kiln fire (bisque) and the terra sig is added, burnished and dries for a few days. Then I put it in the raku kiln.
Love it! One clarification.. that was oz and not grams of mica?
It is grams! Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I will put a note in the description.
Good
beautiful, what do you use to burn?
Horse hair (ethically sourced)
This is Raku ?
Yep. It is a type of Raku called horsehair Raku and I added mica to the pottery too. There are other types of Raku that I would love to try too!
