Her actual name was Mary Francis. She picked up the nickname Skeeter as a young girl from her grandfather who said she was always buzzing around the house like a "skeeter" (mosquito).

Jackie DeShannon's "Every Time You Walk in the Room" was also a big hit in the 60's!! Love her voice! Love y'all sooo much...keep up the wonderful work (fun!!)!!
Skeeter Davis was an acquaintance of mine for a few years. I had her for an autographing at the bookstore I managed in the '90s and she did a full concert in our mall's center court. Got to hear her do "End of the World" live! Her voice was amazing!
The Grand Ole Opry is a radio/tv show that showcases country acts. Its considered the Mecca of country music. It got its name from the fact it took the spot of an opera radio program. On the first episode the announcer said we are replacing the opera with opry. Its a huge deal to be invited to join the Opry as a member.
1 of those misheard lyrics for me when I was 9-10 year old. We did not know the lyrics at all but when this song got played in the music class we'll all be shouting the chorus, "Volcano!! It's the the end of the world!!" 😄
Oh my, what a cutie pie; he is so big already! I love this song by Skeeter Davis. Karen Carpenter did a cover of this too, and of course it is fabulous too.!
The Grand Ole Opry is a country music venue where the top country stars have performed from as early as the 1920s.. It includes a live theatre and a radio show. As far as I know, it's still functioning with a regular show, sometimes daily. A lot of musicians you've featured performed there, including Elvis, the Everly Brothers, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc. Today it's the center of a complex that includes a hotel, restaurants, conference facilities, and so on. At one point it even had a theme park with rides, but I don't think that is still operating. It is in Tennessee, and I've been there twice, as I grew up in Kentucky.
This is really cool reading some of the other comments about people meeting her. I was born in 1969 so first exposure to music wasn't until the late seventies.
I got to see her at the Grand Ole Opry ! And she sounded the same ! The Grand Ole Opry is a live broadcast that showcases past present and future stars ! It’s in Nashville you can go to it and see it live but it’s also a radio show ! It’s been there for 96 years and still going strong !
Back to the 60s we go! (1962, to be exact.) Skeeter Davis (Real name: Mary Francis Penick) was a big name country star back in the 60s. This was her first MAJOR crossover hit. "I Can't Stay Mad At You" was another. She never had a #1 hit, but this song hit #2 on both the pop and country charts. She had a great career, and was one of Dolly Parton's biggest influences.
PBS aired a great documentary about country music by Ken Burns. The Grand Ole Opry featured prominently. There was a country music program called "Hay Barn Dance" that aired on the radio following the "Music Appreciation Hour," which consisted mainly of opera selections. The host of the program joked that the opera was done and that going forward they would be airing a "Grand Ole Opry" instead as a way of poking fun at the show that led into his. Someone like the name enough that the radio station added another show to their lineup with it. As more and more people attended the show live, the studio became too small to accommodate them, they built a venue dedicated to the show. In the mid '50s they aired it on television once a month for a year, and they had another live television special in 1978. It's been airing weekly on television since 1985. The show has launched and/or featured many prominent stars, like Hank Williams, Dolly Parton, and Johnny Cash.
I'm 66 years old now, and this has been one of my all time favorite songs since it was on the radio. I fell in love with her voice when I was just a little boy.
Skeeters recording of this song, was the first, and only time, a song cracked the top 5 on all 4 billboard charts, and was ranked the #2 song of 1963. When I started driving in the 70's, installed an 8 track tape player in my car with 2 9 inch speakers in the back so I could blast my Skeeter Davis tape. Love your reactions!
Awww, Luca is such a show stealer! :) So cute!! His look just said it all; he's like there's no one there Papa, that's just a camera you're looking at! X) Lol
I met Skeeter back in the early 80's, My Mom was friends with her. She was such a sweet, humble lady. Mom was heartbroken when she passed. She was a soft spoken lady. RIP
I can't hear this song without thinking of "Girl, Interrupted." I knew the song before it appeared in the movie, but the scene it was used for was really damn sad.
I have an old cassette tape of my sister singing this song. She used to sing country music in talent contests and would win every week. She was supposed to start singing professionally at this one Country Club that Marty Robbins had sung at, but had a seizure. So that ruined her career real quick. She had seizures pretty often. She mostly sounded like Patsy Cline. I lost her a couple years ago to COPD. R.I.P. Charlene 😇.
Produced in Nashville by Chet Atkins, this was intended to be a Country record (hear the steel guitar) but it crossed over and became a huge Pop hit as well.
For Female Friday, check out a lady who passed just recently, Susan Jacks, lead singer of The Poppy Family, a Canadian band of the early Seventies. Susan had a voice that was poignant and powerful, plucking the heartstrings like a soulful guitar. She was best known in the States for the song, "Which Way You Goin', Billy".
The Grand Ole Opry is a live radio show on WSM in Nashville Tennessee that began broadcasting in 1925. It had a very strong signal you could pick it up from several states over, thanks to NBC. Most of the country stars had a gospel/folk upbringing in the mountains and southern states and Bluegrass music came from there. It was the dream of Country/Western singers to get on the Grand Ole Opry to be heard, long before there were videos or television. It was hard to get on it if you didn't already have a record deal. And they had high standards and expected you to never miss an advertised performance. Which Hank Williams Sr missed performances and got fired. The Outlaw movement started when frustrated singers didn't fit into their mold, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and many others went to Austin Texas to perform on Austin City Limits which was broadcasts on PBS TV stations. A lot of folk singers got a boost from going to Austin.
One of my favourite female country singer and this is one of her best songs. Please check out her songs "A dear John letter", "Gonna get along without you now" and "My last date".
This takes me back to my 10 year old me sitting in my sister's bedroom listening to this on a 45 record player. Always a favorite of mine. Like someone else said, it is easy to sing to.
OMG Luca was so cute, the way he was so seriously studying Jay when he was talking about the song, like he was trying to decide if he agreed with Jay or not.
Sir Jay and Lady Amber, Some singers just have/ had a passion for a song, Skeeter (born Mary Frances Penick 12/30/1931-9/199/2004) put her heart into this Arthur Kent and Sylvia Dee song (1962). It was also sung by Brenda Lee, (1963) the Carpenters (1973) .
this song was featured at the beginning of the Biopic drama about Karen Carpenter, and was played as Karen was rushed into hospital at the end of her life, so that is what it reminds me of.. a truly great beautiful song in itself, but Jay and Amber, you are loving The Carpenters now.. check out the movie if you get time to know what I mean, and for some dramatised but factual details about The Carpenters.
oh my goodness what a cute little baby boy you have just comes on looks adorable off he goes I'm smiling and that's a good thing because the song just put tears in my eyes
I was a little kid when this song was popular. My big sister (15 years older than me) was my idol, I loved her so much! I was sad when she’d leave home after one of her visits. She had to return to her job miles away! Whenever this song came on the radio, I would think of my sister and how much I missed her.
For any 'Baby Boomer' Generation folks, like myself, I think ALL of us are familiar with this song, and Remember & Love It! Easy to sing along to. :) Thx for Reacting to it Guys! PS- Cute to see little Luca trying to flash a smile with His pacifier! :)
I am a 2001 and I play a game called “Fallout 4” and there is a radio station called “Diamond City Radio” and that is where I heard this song. Let me tell ya it hits completely different because on the game it is literally the end of the world. I fell in love with this song when I heard.
This was my fave song when it came out and the first song I learned the words too. I was about 6 years old and ALWAYS sang along with it. ps-still knew the words😀
This song reminds me of playing my cousin's records on her record player - this is one of those songs that I know only because of her. And I loved it as much as you did. Thanks for the reaction - and the memories.
One of my all-time favorites from the way back country female singer songs is Donna Fargo's "Happiest Girl in the Whole USA" oh, when she does that line "now you be careful, gotta go, I love you, have a beautiful day".... wow.
When I was a small town teenager in the 60s the local radio station would broadcast about three hours of requests and dedications every evening where you could phone in a request and dedicate it to someone - maybe you and your girl’s special song or whatever. This was quite common in 60s radio around the country. When you heard this song requested and it was like, “to Judy from Bill”, you knew that Bill just got dumped and was playing his last card to win her back. Simple times.
The Grand Ole Opry is a long-running live country radio show originally aired from the Ryman Auditorium and now airs from Opryland. Most of the performers on the show are known as "Members" of the Opry and you can only become a member upon invitation of a current member. The Opry's membership acts as a kind of living Hall of Fame with both living legends and current artists regularly performing on the show.
Almost. They never broadcasted from the Opryland theme park, but instead build a huge freestanding building near the park. That location is still used by the Opry to this day, even 30 years after the park shuttered. The park was eventually leveled and they built a huge mall there called Opry Mills. Of course, the Opryland hotel is still near there and in use.
Opry members are required to perform on the broadcast an a regular basis. This is why George Strait isn't a member. He lives on his Texas ranch and has no desire to be in Nashville that often!
Could you please do a song sang by Lisa Marie Presley called Lights Out or the solo with her dad Elvis called Don't Cry Daddy in her honor? RIParadise beautiful lady. You're safe in your daddy's arms now. 😥
Here is a category with 3 songs for your future consideration: Songs from the 60s and 70s that were prominently used in weddings. 1) Wedding Song by Paul Stookey (I think you will fall in love with this song) 2) Precious and Few by Climax and 3) We've Only Just Begun by The Carpenters.
She was a excellent singer, her & her sister was singers. In auto accident, her sister died. She carried on singing. Nick name was Skeeter, As her Grandfather gave her because she was always Buzzing Around as a Child. 😢 Love this song, Romantic. Mr T.
Currently going through it my high school lover of 11 years left me Feels like it was yesterday but it's actually almost been two years and I can't get over it for some reason

Skeeter told a radio dj that this was about her mother's death.

I hear the End of the World while listening to my rock stations. The song was a huge crossover.
A British Invasion group Herman’s Hermits covered this song on their 1965 “Herman’s Hermits On Tour” LP.

The Grand Ole Opry is in Nashville and long story short. It's basically Country Music Heaven on Earth.
As old as this song is.... it never Really gets Old !!! So, so wonderful.
She has many many more good songs, contemporary country and gospel country. I just like looking at her, just reminds me of an old friend.

Man! Luca is getting so big. Cute little feller.

The young, child like quality really speaks to the pain of those lost young loves, that I, at the age of 70 still can recall and cry for.
One of my favorite songs to finger-pick on the guitar with it's unique melody and rolling piano in the background.

"Girl Interrupted." Next movie. This song reminds me of that scene.
I loved Skeeter. Her bio-book "Bus Fare To Kentucky" is incredible. A lotta hardships she endured.
People who had a major heartbreak in life understand what she says. I did feel this in my life. I still love this song.
