As a firefighter, I get to visit unique place so we can get to know them before they may be on fire. We have a petroleum product transfer station in our district. They took us inside a round storage tank built to hold tens of thousands of barrels of fuels. With only flat surfaces as a floor and the floating ceiling, and every surface being hard it produced the most amazing echo. Pretty much every sound produced a 4.5+ second unbroken ring. It took time for my brain to adapt so I could try to understand what our guide was telling us. An amazing sound, wonder how it compares to the echo chamber

I love this type of content. Helps us get a glimpse of not only what these engineers have been struggling to achieve, but also the intended VS actual application for the products. That graph in the echo chamber was really eye-opening.

When I was in my 20s I worked as a security guard at a facility that had an anechoic chamber big enough to fit a small house -- about 40' cubed. The standard hazing ritual was to make the new guy go in and shut the door and turn the lights off, to see how long before you start to panic. "Just use the radio and call us when you can't take it any more"... not telling you that it's also a Faraday cage and the radio won't work.
I lasted less than a minute. As soon as the lights went out, I had to lay down on the floor because it felt like I was standing on the edge of a cliff. They turned the lights back on after about a minute, knowing that most people would be panicking by then.
They used it for testing satellite equipment.

We had one of these anechoic chambers at my school Sacramento State University. I was lucky enough to get access in my Physics of Music class as my professor did tests for various speaker and mic companies. What was super trippy is when he shut off the lights and spoke. You’d swear he was right next to you. So cool.

This was awesome.... what a fascinating place and the engineer you interviewed was a major intellect & cool guy.... The echo chamber was immense! When those hands clapped it was like an explosion of sound.... this was one of the most interesting sound videos I've seen, well done Glen.

woah! at 3:48 when glenn turns the camera you get a perfect example of what the guy is talking about at that moment. the volume drop from the mic position changing is so much more noticeable than it would be in a normal room where the sound can echo and reflect

    • @HugoRBMarques

Well as a German I don't recommend it. There are too many cases of failed immigration and some areas are just downright no go zones at night. I would recommend anyone living there to move because our politicians just don't give a crap and care more about huffing their own CO2 free farts than making Berlin a safer city at night.

I went into this sound ‘void’ chambers at a Bose facility years ago, and it was incredibly overwhelming.
You could literally hear your heart, pulse, saliva in your mouth, etc.
Even the clothes and skin ‘rubbing’.
    It was so odd.
Of course this room isn’t as intense, but it’s pretty close.
I’m pretty sure that the Bose room had negative pressure in it as well. (Can’t recall exactly why it’s different from a standard ‘echo free’ room).

    • @grayaj23
      @grayaj23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That was the weirdest part, I think, about my experience in an anechoic chamber -- the negative pressure made it feel like I was standing next to a cliff. I don't normally have a fear of heights, but this triggered a near panic attack and I had to lie down on the floor to make it stop.

The set i bought were clearer and had more DBs for their size. im so glad i spent the time instead of buying online. The past month has been a fun new experience experimenting w all things music/recording. Need to grab an acoustic and play in both rooms.

I used to work somewhere with an anechoic chamber. It was the weirdest place ever. You just can't understand how you depend on echos to hear properly until you've been in one. You can't property pinpoint sound direction even when you are looking at the person speaking. And if someone speaks from directly behind you, you just don't hear them. It's freaky.

I build & use my own monitors alongside commercial monitors as control ( Flatest & most clinical-sounding I can afford ) An anechoic chamber is NOT nessesary to isolate-test monitors. FFT and the ability to trunicate the pulse response (timewise) before the wave even hits 1st reflection (usually the floor), will give virtually the same results as anechoic.. That being said, an anechoic is a wonderful tool b/c you can listen to them long-term, unlike using the FFT trick mentioned. *Anyone who poseses a calibrated test mic can do this using software that's capable. I use the free/donate REW, it's exellent & and as long as you computer doesn't choke, REW can perform quasi-anechoic tests & any other worthwhile tests you can think of.. BTW-2: That echo/verb Chamber is HUGE and sounds awesome! Great video, & FU fGlenn, or being able to visit Germany...

Speaker measurement is harder with just an anechoic chamber than with just a Klippel NFS. It is hard to measure directivity without a klippel NFS. And speaker directivity is more important than frequency response.

But that's the weird thing, you can make very VERY flat speaker quite economically, but it's susceptible to the acoustics of the room. But headphones are inherently very very uneven in response, and to get flat phones, you need to spend horrible amount of cash in comparison to a speaker that's as flat as those headphones. But headphones do not have issues with room acoustics... so you cannot win.
You either get speakers cheap, and spend fortune on acoustics or vice versa...
But that is the choice you must make. Phones distort your stereo field as well... so speakers are ultimately better choice, but to do good... acoustics!

That anechoic chamber, is, no different. Than the way, American recording studios. Used to be built. Back in the disco days. Where everything was, dead, dead, dead. Ambient drums? No way! Ambient guitars? Are you kidding? Vocals, as dry as the, Sonora desert. I haven't been to the, Sahara, personally. Except in Las Vegas. Decades ago. But I,, dry gas.
Anechoic chamber is a misnomer. As we could still hear you. It did not absorb, you. You must be all wet? Up the, Detroit River without a paddle. Way past, Belle Isle. And up, Woodward Avenue, in Detroit. To the Detroit Zoo. And across the street from that. Right off of 9 Mile Road. Used to be an, Elias Brothers,, Big Boy restaurant. With car window service. And a, ordering intercom.. Just like at Sonic Burger, would have. Over 50 years later. Along with that awesome, R&B music sound! Plus, Rare Earth,, Bob Seeger and a host of other, hit makers. Of the rock 'n' roll genre. And 80% of the R&B outta' Detroit. From Cars to Funk and back! Was the George Clinton, funk around the block band. Or something of that nature. And Bootsy Collins, knocking at the back door. Not to forget Fred Wesley. But he wasn't from Detroit. He was from, Bama. Originally. And got his degree in music from the,, University of Alabama. Before he went to work for, James Brown. And one hell of a bone player! And he knows how to FUNK! And I'm just a white Jewish kid from Detroit who's into funk and R&B. As is all more loving oriented. Than, bad ass white rock 'n' roll boys. That would generally do nothing. For a poor little squirrel.. They might have, gotten run over with their, motorcycle? Which is virtually impossible to do! With a motorcycle and a squirrel. In 40 feet of width. Of the road the motorcycle was on. Along with the squirrel. Motorcycle tires are only, 3 inches wide. Within a, 4 Lane, 40 foot,, width... And……
Yes! This squirrel was out to, commit suicide. By motorcycle. By my motorcycle! And yet… I had to stop. Jump off my motorcycle. Run back to poor little squirrel. Lying on its back. Looking straight up, blankly. I considered giving it, CSR. Or, Cardiopulmonary Squirrel Resuscitation. But I just looked at it.. With it, blankly looking at me. I simply said to it. I hope you're happy now? Walked back to my motorcycle. And drove the next,, 3 blocks. To my job.. At NBC-TV News, Washington, DC. As one of their top,, Senior, first call, Network-TV,, Audio Engineer's and Miracle Maintenance Engineer's... Of, 20 years. Putting my hands in people's clothing. Tickling them. As I pulled a microphone cord, through their clothing. Then unbuttoning their shirts. And grabbing around. For the microphone. Then affixing it to their,, ties or lapels. Sometimes hidden in their brassiere. Always fun. Thank you lady. It was good for me. How is that microphone for you? A little small maybe? Really tiny? Really tiny. But you don't want to give a girl.. An old-fashioned, 1950s, RCA, dynamic, lavalier microphone. Because it's about the size of an extra-large tampon. And we couldn't be sure. What's the women might do with that? So we had to wait. Until the 1980s. Without the need of a phallic looking extra long, shotgun microphone. When Sony,, came to everyone's rescue! And gave us, itty-bitty, dinky, ultra small, back electret capacitor a.k.a., antiquated term for, condenser microphone. Basically the same kind. That lost them in World War II,, fighter aircraft superiority. Because the humidity from their voices. Kept making the microphone sound,, wink out. Until Sony later perfected that.. After they lost. Where it's really no longer a problem. And microphones got,, itsy-bitsy. So the girls couldn't stick them in the wrong places, anymore.
And that's the history of, condenser lavalier microphones. And suicidal squirrels. All true. All real all the time! Yes I killed that squirrel. He was looking all stupid and dead.. On its back faceup. How did he time that so accurately? I was the only one on the road! It was 40 feet wide! And he leaped! Just at the right moment.. To die! But then I've also killed a bird. That smashed into my helmet. At 70 mph. That was not fun! Good thing I had my visor, closed! And all I saw were feathers in my rearview mirror. As they floated to tthe ground. And this tiny lump. Looking almost like a dog had relieved itself in the road. By crapping out, a dead bird. With very few feathers. They just exploded off the bird! It was amazing! Almost like a tickertape parade! Made out of feathers.
I like to kill animals with my motorcycle. It's challenging.
    I see, dead acoustics.
