5 years ago My father is used to drive a milk vehicle every day through this road without any power steering carry a 45 cans of aavin milk from ooty to masinakudi, moyar and mudhumalai .once we are in Akoni my father taking vehicle from ooty to masinakudi at time we saw father driving a 1995 model S benz lorry no power steering, no power brake, no any safety systems my father using his full potential to rotate the steering of vehicle at that moment tears are coming out from my eyes without knowing me I am proud to my father .....any how dear friends and mates drive carefully in this road without any experience don't take this road better to go through gudulur route incase you going to take this road follow the instructions on side boards which they mention on which gear you have to drive a vehicle be safe -TKY

2018 இல் ஒரு விபத்து நடந்தது அதில் பயணம் செய்த 7 பேரில் 6 பேர் மரணம் அடைந்தனர் இதில் நரக வேதனை என்னவென்றால் அவர்கள் மூன்று நாட்களுக்கு பிறகு தான் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டனர் ஆனால் அதில் ஒருவர் மட்டும் உயிரோடு இருந்தார். நான் ஏன் இதை பதிவிடுகிறேன் என்னவென்றால் அதில் உயிரிழந்தவர்களில் என்னுடைய நண்பரும் ஒருவர். இந்த விபத்தில் தான் இந்த மரணசாலை பற்றி தெரிய வந்தது. ஆனால் இது ஒரு தொடர்கதையாக தொடர்கிறது. இதில் பெரும்பாலோனோர் சென்னையைச் சேர்ந்த நடுத்தர வயது இளைஞர்கள்.

நான் கடந்தாண்டு குடும்பத்துடன் மசினகுடி சென்று விட்டு இந்த பாதையில் ஊட்டிக்கு திரும்பினேன் இதில் கவனிக்க வேண்டிய விஷயம் என்னவென்றால் இந்த வழியாக ஊட்டிக்கு திரும்ப 28 கிலோமீட்டர்களே வரும்போது கூடலூர் வழியாக வந்தேன் கிட்டத்தட்ட 60-75 கிலோமீட்டர்கள் இதனாலேயே ஊட்டிக்கு திரும்ப சிலர் இந்த பாதையை தேர்வு செய்வர் மிகவும் ஆபத்தான குறுகிய வலைவுகளை கடக்க வேண்டியதாயிற்று ஒரு வித அச்சமும் ஏற்பட்டது தயவுசெய்து இந்த பாதையை தவிர்ப்பது நல்லது வாழ்க வளமுடன்

I am from kovai. I have travelled from Ooty to masinagudi vai kalati.. The road was dangerous. I have stopped at a view point which saves my life. The break drum got over heated. Once I stepped down from kalai my clutch pedel was damaged ..Thanks to the local people, they towed our car and dropped us to the near by mechanic shop.
Hats off to ambulance driver and reporter, for someone lifes they taking risks....

I am from Chennai. I had recently driven in Kalleti road with a TN-43 vehicle. Must say it is very dangerous road and it takes very high ghat driving skills to complete this trip without any accidents. Best not to take large vehicles such as SUV, VAN, Mini Bus. Better take the regular route if you are travelling with family. Do not take risks. It is not a regular route like Conoor-Ooty, Yelagiri or Yercaud road. Totally different, difficult.
Hello sir, thays true fact.. am from coimbatore and do regular rides and drives along the worst terrain on the western ghats and i surely admit 80% of ppl from metros like Chennai and Bangalore with minimal or nill mountain terrian experience, even inexperienced prof drivers do this mistakes on hills hell lot of times. Compete with local car drivers who have expertise in hills. Many trust advanced mechanics than basic physics which is a primary cause for all these accidents.

I went down in TVS scooty on Nov 2022 and climbed up. I returned to Ooty safely.

Yes I agree this is one of the dangerous roads I have ever driven. I took this road while going to Ooty from Bangalore. I was able to manage the sharp hairpin bends easily as i was driving a new car and no much vehicular traffic on the opposite side, but with older cars it would be difficult. And yes there was a steep in which vehicle before me got struck and got halted, which disrupted the traffic and it was very difficult to push the car on the steep. When i pushed, My front wheel almost jumped few inches above the ground but some how could manage to touch the ground again. I didn't had guts to take this road while coming back, took the road via gudalur, which is easily motorable road.

2020 டிசம்பர் போது நண்பர்களோடு இதே வழியில் Permission வாங்கிக்கொண்டு ஊட்டியில் இருந்து வந்தோம். மாலை 3 மணிக்கு கல்லட்டி வரும்போது Break Failure, ஈரக்கொலையே நடுங்கி விட்டது, இதற்கு முன்பு 4 முறை இதே வழியில் பயணம் செய்து இருக்கிறேன், ஆனாலும் நண்பரது car break pad சற்று மோசமானதாக இருந்ததால் வண்டியை Hand Break போட்டு நிறுத்திவிட்டேன், சிறுது நேரம் கழித்து மசினகுடியை சேர்ந்த Jeep Driver Raja என்பவர் தான் எங்களுக்கு உதவினார், மற்ற 4 பேரும் Jeep இல் ஏறிக்கொள்ள நான் மட்டும் 1st Gear லே வந்தேன் நண்பர்களுக்கு மூச்சே நின்று விட்டது.

We are using this road for last 17 years in our ooty trips. Downhill towards masinagudi requires alot of terrain experience. Uphill also its a steep terrain and needs alot of experience to drive safely. During downhill vehicles loosing control were great threat to hill climbing vehicles. Strictly not recommended for those who didn't travelled yet

Allow masinagudi to Ooty route from 7 AM to 4 PM.block both side from 4 Pm to morning 7 AM.
Last month I drive in this route 2nd gear and slow driving. Avoid accident
The problem is, the driver wanted to reach Masinagudi before the forest gate closes, and also it was at night time and raining, so depending on the condition of the vehicle the accident could have happened..
Now days students also seen taking self driven car's to tourist places, especially from Bangalore & Mysore, due to lack of experience in steep roads and lack of driving knowledge, accidents are happening..
Because of some vehicles without expirence indulge in accidents, you can't ask everyone to avoid this road..
have you ever fallen from a cliff? plz don't take me rude but its a good precaution to avoid such roads as some beginners with mindset like. If we drove only then well learn.. will deftly try and end up wrong... u might be a good driver but please don't encourage any others to take this route this is a very dangerous place
I am for Ooty. I am a hills drive. Its a very very dangarous road. It's better to take out the route from Google map. it's a highly dangarous road. To save deasel do not put your life in risk.
I have driven on Masinagudi Kalhatty road for over 18 years now. For people without proper hill driving experience must avoid this road. While going downhill should descend in 2nd gear only. Should not step on the accelerator while going downhill. Should not drive in higher gears and use brakes to control while going downhill. Just follow these 3 rules and then this road is not dangerous. Problem is people coming from plains with no proper prior experience driving in hills end up driving the wrong way eventually meet with an accident on this road. While the media here has a point this road is also not a widow maker. Please do not paint such a picture about it. Sad part is because of these accidents caused by people coming from other places without proper hill driving experience many Coimbatore people who are frequent visitors to Mudumalai who also have the proper experience in hill driving and knowledge about this road are also now denied access to this beautiful scenic road going downhill. For people who know this road well going through Gudalur is a big detour for us and we also miss the scenic view we get driving downhill through Kalhatty Masinagudi road.

Very dangerous and difficult to drive in this route
Drivers should always follow the traffic rules including speed limits wherever they are driving irrespective of ghat road or highways. Most of the drivers don’t care much about the rules. It was very recently when i asked a guy to stick to his lane (near chennai), he came to hit me and told arrogantly that he would drive his own way. I was so afraid looking at him. He is not just risking his life, but others as well. This kallati road is very dangerous and i was using it last few years and not any more. Initially, Whenever i want to go from ooty to Masinagudi, one of my friend’s (a local VAO) would come to pick me and he would guide me as to how i should drive on this road as he has seen so many fatalities here. Please avoid this road or follow the sign board 100% or have a local person drop you downhill. Better to enjoy the drive thru gudalur route watching wild animals and nature. I’ve started using the long route for the last few years.
Last, we definitely appreciate the support of this rescue team! Hope they see no more accidents on this road in the future! I was able to understand the painful feeling of this team in one of their previous video!

Better check your vehicle before use this road. Avoid frequent breaking. Then your vehicle brake will heat up and fail. It will lead to a breaking failure (due to brake pad and drum heats up). These are the mistakes most people make on steep roads. This is not about a good driving skill or bad driving skill. These kinds of accidents mainly happen due to breake failures when people do rash driving after taking a hairpin bend and break near the bend to approach next hairpin bend. use gears to reduce your vehicle speed when approaching hill roads and hairpin bends. Don't use your brakes frequently. And don't think/rely on your vehicles whether you have the latest breaking technology or some esp/ebd/abs or hill hold assist. Those won't help you.

Just ban Force tempo in hill tracts...once our van didn't stop at double road (forest Dale) Coonoor down but luckily we trun on mud road on right side. After cooling the break drum we continued to Mtp.
I can't understand why the RTO don't take action on this vehicle entering in hills inspite of so many complaint. Unfortunately company also not working on thier break system? Or is it a way to make 'cuts'

Athe pola ooty RTO adikadi velila irunthu vara vandiya check pananum, bcz hills drive pani palakam ilathavangalala than intha mari accident.. Nan last month kuda masinakudi la irunthu kallati vazhiya than mela vanthen.. Appovum niraya vandi vegama keela yerangunichi

Hairpin bends 10 to 15 is the most dangerous bends in the Kalatti ,masanagudi road in the Nilgries district, So don't buy any property in the road ,Moreover, all roadside properties are owned by karnataka people.
Beware. Now the district administration, made this road as one way.HENCE FORTH I DECIDED NOT TO TAKE THIS ROAD TO OOTY. Thanks for the good advice and warning to the tourists who are coming from Mysore.
