@@panzertee9790 The Western Roman Empire stopped being able to function as a state in 480 and was extinct even as a concept by 600. Breaking free of something that no longer exists is not too hard.

@TheRenaissanceman65 San Marino started as a monastery in 301. Not exactly independent. The Western Roman empire fell apart over the next century and a half through invasion and reductions in taxation income (small government in practice).
Fun fact about San Marino (the country). When Napoleon was there (around 1800) he offered the San Marini (?) an enlargement for their country, but the San Marini gently refused the option, as the larger country would be more difficult to defend. Another "fun" fact (if you can call it fun). When I was there in 2005 at a lot of spots you could buy wine with a picture of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini on it.
@F0r3A I was there somewhere around the 25th of june (saturday). Don't know the exact date of our visit to San Marino city as we stayed for a few nights at Centro Vacanze San Marino.

What a life that cat must live. Free to roam wherever it pleases with practically no fear of predators. Just in the forest up on the peak of a mountain top on its own. I wish we could see through it's eyes for a period of time to see the world how it sees it

I'm getting bored saying how enjoyable your programmes are. But one other thing is to listen to the background music. Very good.
San Marino Is such a lovely place. I have been there a few times before. It's latest annexations were some of localities in 1463 which were back then under the rule of the Malatesta family in Rimini (this family is also mentioned in the Divine Comedy). These are Faetano, Fiorentino, Montegiardino and Serravalle (nowadays the largest and most populated place in San Marino, thanks to the curazia of Dogana). Napoleon offered them the Riviera of Rimini, but they rejected as it would be difficult for them to integrate non sammarinese people.
To reach the border you can also catch bus no. 16 of START Romagna from Rimini station and get off at the Monte Cieco bus stop, Just opposite Dogana
Although people rarely call it such, the Borough of Manhattan in New York City is officially the County of New York, so if you are in Manhattan you are in fact in New York County, New York City, New York State
If you're counting that, then I give you Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma state.

Interesting fact:
San Marino has two heads of state at the same time. Two captains regent who are jointly elected for 6 months. This system is going back to the 13th century at least.

More likely he's confused about being in Southend-on-Sea. Not a mountainous mini state the last time I checked.

SO. It turns out. If you watch this video without prior knowledge of the existence of Flower Pot Men, and you are a Tim Traveller enthusiast, your memories can gen completely jumbled up thinking that there IS a funky 60's song about going to San Marino, and then you spend ten minutes being laughed at by google searches just thrning back the national hymn and the Eurovision songs.

Love your presentations but the New York quip, though hilarious, is a bit off. New York City is in New York County in New York State. How do I know this? I had to get an Apostile attached to my grandfather's birth certificate for the Italian Consulate which involved the NY City Archives issuing a Letter of Exemplification which was then forwarded to the NY County Court for Verification followed by having it Certified by the NY State Department to obtain the required Apostile.
The pulsing LED reminded me of the dinner scene in Young Frankenstein when The Good Doctor says, of the constable's arrival, "Everyone must remain Completely Normal!" as his suit collar pops open...
