- In February 2005, Denmark discovered that its highest point wasn't actually its highest point. This was a bit of a surprise - but to be fair, the same thing had happened in 1953. And 1924. And 1847. But how can it be so difficult to find your highest point? Or does the point actually change? Do Danish mountains somehow move around every few decades? I went to Denmark to find out for myself...

Oh, good that you wrote this, I was ready to pick up my torch and pitchfork and head to TH-cam headquarters! I got this in my "Home" tab but couldn't figure out why it wasn't in my subscriptions that I just came from.
Even if repeated notifications are disabled to prevent abuse, it seems really dumb that there's nothing you could do to make the video appear under Subscriptions.
Funnily enough, this reminded me that I have not yet clicked the bell button (which, after seeing every video and craving every new video for 2 years, would seem imperative to do)

This is so true. I was just sitting here wondering if Tim's equally bang on for all his other attempts at pronouncing local places. I've heard people who've been living here for 30 years do a much worse job, so kudos to Tim for that effort.

Yeah the only pronunciation that was a bit off was of "Goddag". Though it sounded like it might have picked up a bit of pronunciation from a local dialect, and then tried to revert it to standard, but getting the tempo wrong.

As an experienced mountaineer, I've scaled the highest points in Tuvalu, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Estonia, and the Netherlands. I'm willing to take on Denmark's highest summit once they decide what it is, and if they provide free Carlsberg.
You are indeed allowed to bring a, paid for Carlsberg, or any other of the fine beers made in Denmark (Try a "Thy Pils", from the local Thisted Bryghus! Some years ago it was voted the finest, and it is to my humble (humle) opinion!)😄

Your pronunciation of the danish placenames is almost flawless. As a sidenote, am I the only one appreciating how well thougt out the choice of background music in your videos is? (0:12 Ain't No Mountain, while talking about mountains, 2:02 QI Theme, because of pedantry😄, Heaven Is A Place On Earth, talking about Himmelbjerget or "Heaven/Sky Mountain" and at 8:10 Stor Mand, a massive danish pop hit last year.

I love it. You really made me laugh (I'm Danish by the way). Back in the 70's (remember, no internet) my aunts an uncles could use an entire evening argueing over this. And every time my grandmother brought out her Encyclopedia (from 1800-something) claiming Himmelbjerget to be the highest point. Just love your story, a stroll down memory lane.

Det bare et problem mange danskere har fordi vi har jo "lære" som verbum til selv at lære og lære fra sig, men det ikke det samme på engelsk.

Historical reference for the international audience; The inscription on the Tower at @04:54 reads "North-Schlesvig reunited with the Motherland" - Denmark was actually neutral in WW1, but after Germany was defeated, large parts of Jutland (which had been occupied by Prussia, and later Germany) since the war of 1864 were returned to Denmark in 1920, in an event known as the "reunification". It is a massive part of the national romance of Denmark, and there are a great number of monuments just like this tower.
Not to forget that the people, who lived in the area, voted on where the border should go AND created a "multicultural" environt for the germans who ended up on the danish side and vice versa, with schools, libraries aso. A very good solution really.

Danish archaeologist here. "Bavnehøj" literally means "burning hill", which was a common manmade construction in the iron and viking age to as a system to alert your territory about oncoming enemies by lighting a visible fire. The reason why the height is so hard to determine (man made/natural) is that they were often built on already constructed Bronze age grave mounds which were also already constructed centuries before, because of their natural peaks in the landscape, but some and many were over-plowed. So yeah, considering this history and erosion, who knows.
The English equivalent of "bavnehøj" is "beacon"; for example in the Malvern Hills you can find the Herefordshire Beacon and the Worcestershire Beacon which are both named from their use for signalling beacons even though they're both natural rather than man-made. Herefordshire Beacon also has an iron-age hill fort, known as British Camp.

Most likely they had a wind mill for grinding flour. Old place names often has a logical explanation, connected to practical use or major historical events ...
Being a danish guy who grew up in Luxembourg (now living in not so flat Norway) and who used to go skiing in the Alps, I can without a doubt say I was underwhelmed by Himmelbjerget. As kids, my sister and I were so excited to see ‘the famous mountain’ but it soon turned into disappointment when our parents said “We are here!” (While dring in to the parking lot) and we could only reply “where is the mountain”.

I think Tim doesn't get eneugh credit for the wonderful little soundtracks in his videos, most people might not even notice or think much of it but these subtle piano covers fit perfectly into this format of video and the fact that they're recognisable makes it such a pleasant addition

So the highest point of Denmark is still 23 meters lower than the lowest point of Switzerland, the surface of Lago Maggiore.
It's fun to watch this video as a Dane because funnily enough, I visited all the peaks from the top 3 in one day. I have also visited "Himmelbjerget" and the nature around there is quite beautiful.
With this I consider you the danish champion in speed mountain climbing!

I never expected there to be 7 countries below us. Especially not Denmark since I know Denmark has a lot more (landscape) curves than us.

I had assumed you had the lowest open-air natural point (so no coal mines or caves), but apparently it's actually the Etang de Lavalduc in southeastern France (10 meters/33 feet) for the EU, and for the broad definition of Europe, the shore of the Caspian Sea (28 meters/92 feet).

They traveled around Denmark and tried a lot of different things.
One of those things was driving down Himmelbjerget in soapbox cars... they were terrified... until they saw "the mountain" 🤣

Brilliant. I'm wondering if tectonic movements might change the heights over time? Or indeed, the tilt of the land after the ice age. In the UK, the North (Scotland) is rising and the South (England) is sinking - all due to the land (in the north) recovering from being covered in ice. If this is happening in Denmark too, new high points may yet come into being.
Same thing is actually happening here in Denmark. North-western part is rising about 1 mm per year, while south-eastern part is sinking. But other than the peaks in that general area, I doubt there will be any other contenders any time soon. There are a lot of peaks on the ridgeline of Jutland, which is in the part that is slowly rising. But that is also where the peaks in the video are located, so...
Yes I think you're both right! The sources that I read suggested that these peaks are actually sinking - and that this movement was part of the reason why both Ejer Bavnehoj and Yding Skovhoj measured lower in 2005 than they did 1953. But that doesn't explain how Mollehoj ended up higher. So I wasn't fully convinced. There are doubtless a bunch of other factors involved too...

@@TheTimTraveller Denmark is a large sand bank between the north sea and the Baltic sea. Glacier rebound is moving all the area upward around 1 to 5mm/year since its not evenly distributed. This can be seen on rocks on the coastline (where it is stable), rocks that once were under the ocean and are today on dry land.
Denmark raises between 1mm and 1cm every year depending on place and time. We have Viking age settlements placed at the bottom of Fjords that are now miles from the coast line
Fire up the video. Spend 2 minutes checking facts and figures about Faroe and Greenland because he's obviously forgotten ... oh, he's dealt with that. Oh, another point of pedantry, is a Bronze Age burial mound not an artific.. oh, covered that too.
My father bicycled Denmark round as a student with a friend in the late 1930's. Years later he would tell us about this trip, and he would always tell us "Denmark is low, but it is not flat".
Thank god he wasn't a few years younger!

my family had a dutch exchange student long ago, maybe the only person to be sincere when calling our hills for mountains. we are low but hilly, where as the dutch are low and flat.

Seems like a lot of the Germanic countries use the word "Berg" rather loosely, especially in the plains of the Netherlands, northern Germany, and Denmark. EG. Berlin has a neighborhood called Prenzlauer Berg.

Also, I guess the problem with finding the highest mountain when the difference is centimetres is that when people are gonna go there they're essentially gonna flatten it a bit and give it to the next place. 🤷🏽♀️
I'm blanking on where, but I know there's a war between two mountains in some country where every time someone summits one, they add a rock to a pile at the top of each that mountain, thus making it technically taller. So the mountains officially share the title because it changes so damn often.
I'm glad they made somewhat of a big deal out of it. It resulted in new methods of geographic measurement being employed in a public way, Denmark making mountains out of....small hills, and was interesting enough to attract a procession of picky peak pondering pedants.
In the end, the highest point was in our hearts.

Can be quite literally if you go back to Aarhus and scale the TV tower just slightly outside of it, I'm pretty sure if you include man made structures that is the highest point in Denmark. If you want to climb something slightly easier than a TV tower though there's also the not quite a skyscraper being constructed at the top of Randersvej, if you go onto it's roof and bend over so your chest is sticking out then the highest point would be very close to your heart.

The change in 2005 was that they started using Danish Elevation Model (DEM), which is a laser scanning (LIDAR) of the surface, the most recent is from 2022 and in the process of being released.

With regards to the lowest point in The Netherlands, that does shift around. Just as they finished a piece of art in a small lake at the lowest point (and having to the top of the structure be exactly at 0 mtr NAP), it was measured again and it moved, two towns to the east :-) . We suffer from soil subsidence because of pumping the water away to keep our feet dry. And the rate of subsiding is not everywhere the same.
And add to that the isostatic subsidence as a result of adjustment after the ice ages.

As a dane who lives close to the "skymountain", i can assure you it's views are incridible. I once went there at 1 am with a friend of mine, and just seeing the river and cities off in the distance was incridble.
Fun fact: A literal bridge is taller than Møllehøj called "Storbæltsbroen" that connects between Fyn and Sjælland, and is 254 meters tall.
Technically the highest (man made) point of Denmark is the Rø television tower on Bornholm which is 431 meters above sea level.
The Faroes contains some pretty lofty fells.I went up one called Sornfelli which I think was around 730m and it had a weather station on top and an unmanned military instillation below and very interesting ladders to get from the weather station to to military base plus signs telling you not to!

Fun facts: Ejer (cityname) Bavne (A 'Bavn' is a signalfire used to communicate) Høj (hill). So the name in english roughly translates to "Ejer Signaling hill"

I live in New Zealand, and visited Denmark in 2019. Denmark feels quite similar to the rolling farmland in New Zealand, except there are no hills or mountains off in the distance, which was weird.
These clips reminded me of British farmland too, except we'd consider this to be a fairly flat part of the country. We're not the most mountainous place, but definitely moreso than Denmark by the looks of it.
It'd be a much less dramatic trip, if the Hobbits were strolling through Danish hillsides in comparison.

Major applause to you for your pronunciation 👏🏻 we have a song called “I et land uden høje bjerge” or translated “In a country without high mountains” where the singer expresses his love for his homeland, I think it’s a most fitting song title to describe Denmark.

In Lithuania we have/had similar situation. For a long time it was believed that highest mountain (hill rather) is Juozapinė, but after new measurments it was discovered that actually the highest point is few hundred meters away at Aukštojas hill. But in both cases you wouldn't know it's the highest point of anything as the terrain is littered with small hills.
Ohh my good Lithuanian man. You NEED to settle this once and for all and get your own mountain tower with an elevator. Lithuania deserve the best, just like here. No expense should be spared. I think you should make some noise and write to some papers. In times with war close by, we all need some funny stories and ridiculous things to argue about. As the English half of an English-Italian couple may I say that trains being late is OUR national sport. I feel the Italian trains beat British ones for sheer lateness, but the Italians wouldn't have trains to be late if the British hadn't invented them. my personal best in the UK owing to a derailment six hours, in Italy seeing the Paris-Ljuljana express arriving twenty-fours late at Trieste Centrale. However, the Caledonian Sleeper from Glasgow to London recently managed the impressive feat of not even leaving Glasgow Central to the consternation of the passengers who had been pleased that their ride had been so much quieter than usual and slept through the night without moving a millimetre. Beat that Denmark with your ø and your hygge!

Please come back in the summer so you can take the lovely trip from Silkeborg to Himmelbjerget on "Hjejlen", the world´s oldest paddle steamer still in existence. Or.... is it? Because Norwegians claim that their "Skibladner" is actually the oldest. But, hah! They´re wrong, because Skibladner was heavily rebuilt, and is practically a Ship of Theseus, whereas Hjejlen is almost completely unchanged, even sporting the lovely original steam engine. However, they did swap out the boiler of Hjejlen in the 1930s, so eh... - Anyway, Hjejlen is amazing and the trip even more so, and that controversy would make for another of your great movies, Tim!
Well, if we are to go very technical on Norway, then "Skibladner" isn't even theirs historically speaking, as they were ruled by Sweden from 1813 until 1907. Before 1813, they were ruled by Denmark. A rule which started in 1397. On paper they were part of a union with Denmark, but in reality they were ruled by Denmark, as Norway didn't have a king or queen for the majority of those 416 years. In 1813 they finally declared independence... But that only lasted 6 months, before Sweden took them and kept them for another 94 years. "Skibladner" is allegedly built around 1888, which places it directly in the period of Swedish rule.

Around 35 years ago left Ireland and went to Denmark to visit friends. they took us to this area to show us the highest mountain.
Whilst at the area of the peak, I spotted an abandoned bicycle in the ditch. ( Very rare in spotlessly clean Denmark). Pulled it out, and jumped on the bent rims of the bike to straighten them enough to make the flat wheels turn. Proceeded to ride the bike to the supposed peak. Put it carefully back in ditch afterwards.

There's a book by a Norwegian mountaineer about how he climbed all Danish mountains of at least 100m asl. It's a fun read.
It has its place next to the book by Messner.

I remember climbing up Himmelbjerget on a school trip in the 5th grade, and it really is the closest thing we have to a mountain....
and I think I remember Ejer Baunehøj (strangely impressive pronounciation on that one, by the way) being the official highest point in my childhood in the late 80's/early 90's, but then later it was maybe Yding Skovhøj, and then I was just confused..
I've been biking in that area a few times, and you barely notice being at the so-called highest point....
the big hill near Leestrup in south-east Sjælland was more impressive....
As a Dane I must say that Yyou actually pronounced those danish words supricingly good! And extra kudos for choosing a instrumental version of a very popular danish song called “stor mand” as the background music in the end:)

Actually it took 19 attempts over 50 years and 27 tragic climbing fatalities before a pure Danish expedition could finally raise the Danish flag on top of Himmelbjerget. Sadly this national triumph and its human cost is nearly forgotten... "Never have so many people climbed so few meters to achieve so little"

We have a similar story in Wisconsin when it comes to the highest point from sea level to highest point from local terrain.
Rib Mountain in Wausau is believed to be the highest point, and still is from surrounding terrain. But is only the third highest point from sea level. Timm’s Hill in Ogema is the highest point, but is hard to tell because it is a gradual slope for most of it, and you really don’t notice it at all.

Yes, they have one train a week that you can take from Vatican City to the Pope's citadel in Italy, but not back again (at least you can't take the train all the way back, you have to get out in Italy). I'm not sure if it's running at the moment though, you'd have to check.
