Excellent solution to save $12 on replacement gas cap. Your explanation was done concisely but removing the cap cover was more difficult than what was done in the video.
If you overfill the tank, gas will saturate the carbon in the cap and cause run issues until it dries out. Many don’t know that’s what the red insert is for in the neck of the tank.
Concerns about water droplets getting into fuel through that new wider, 3/16" hole in the cap if the mower happens to be out in rain, accidentally sprayed by hose, etc?
You only drill through the lower portion of the cap... If you watch the video what I do is I separate the ratchet top from the lower threaded portion; I then drill through and reassemble the cap... It works as an umbrella seal...

A gas mask or respirator is easier to breath through if you remove the filter.
