    Hi, how often did you check your mirrors and blinds or? And when you checked your mirrors did you move your whole head or just your eyes?

    • @bridget27
      @bridget27  4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I think I checked my mirrors every 3 - 5 seconds (a bit excessive, I know, but apparently it’s very easy to lose points for this!) as well as checking my blind spot every time I changed a lane, while doing the parallel park, or whenever I turned at an intersection. When I was checking my mirrors, I would slightly move my head to the left and right (not a lot, just enough to make it obvious I was looking,) as well as raising my chin a bit when looking in the rear view mirror. Hope this helps!

    • @bridget27
      @bridget27  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I sat the test in my own car, just because I was super familiar with it and I had sat my AA lessons in it / driven it while on my learners. I think if you have had lessons with the AA in one of those AA Suzuki Swifts, your driving instructor is able to rent it to you for your test, at a cost to you I think? I reckon sit it in your own car if it’s available to you, just because it’s more convenient, free, and you’ll probably be more familiar with its size and handling! I definitely recommend taking your restricted test once you feel confident enough, once you get over your nerves at the start, it’s honestly not as bad as you would expect! :)

      When I sat through a few of my driving lessons with my instructor, he took me around a few of the possible circuits / part of circuits. We did not cover this route in those lessons. Because of how unusually short my test was, it would be unusual for your test to have the same circuit however, but you never know!

  • @m1r_ge
    @m1r_ge ปีที่แล้ว

    When taking the test, did you had your learner's plate on? When driving there too, was someone else other than the instructor there to be supervision until you got to the place? I'm planning on taking mine soon and was just curious if it's fine to go there myself without supervision.

    • @gunna3223
      @gunna3223 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Before you do the test, you will still be on your learners so no you can't drive there on your own. Although if you pass, you could drive back on your own. And you do have to display your L plates during the test.

    • @bridget27
      @bridget27  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Everyone else I’ve spoken to, and what it should usually
      be, is that the test is about 45 minutes of driving time - I believe mine may be an outlier due to the time of day I booked (i.e. if it were the school term, more traffic would have been expected at this time of day, hence the circuit is shorter to account for traffic? At least this is my speculation :)

    At about 1:30, I heard the examiner say turn left and I saw you enter the straight road directly. Is there an error here? I remember that the turn should turn to the nearest road.

    • @bridget27
      @bridget27  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The “turn left” instruction is just referring to when I turn left onto Parkhouse Road from Jipcho Road.
      The “turning into the nearest lane” rule is true if the lanes were already two separate lanes at the point of turning, however, if you look closely at the video, I turn into a single lane, which splits into two lanes AFTER I’ve turned onto Parkhouse Road. Thus, you can choose the lane relevant to which direction you are going. Because the instructor had just told me to turn right, I joined the straight lane.
      I had practiced this specific turn with my driving instructor before my test, so I am pretty certain this is correct (plus did not receive any form of correction from the examiner about this move :))

    • @bridget27
      @bridget27  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The test started at about 3:25pm (this was one of the last booking times of the day I believe), which might explain why my test was only 27 mins long? I think he may have taken me on some shortcuts / cut some roads out, just because traffic was starting to get bad on some of the busier roads, as not to give me an unfair advantage? If you like, there is a timer in the bottom of the dashcam video if you’d like to know the exact start and finish timing!

    did u do any motorway driving? or did u do up to 80km roads?

    • @bridget27
      @bridget27  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On this circuit (and I think for this entire testing station) I didn’t go above 70kmh (that one short bridge part,) with most of the driving occurring in 50kmh and 60kmh areas. I think it’s because there aren’t any 80kmh zones near Sockburn? However at other testing stations in Christchurch I’ve heard you’ll most likely go in 80kmh zones, just not at Jipcho it seems
      I wouldn’t think they’d take you onto the motorway either (i.e. Christchurch Southern Motorway,) but I’m also not too sure about that sorry!

    • @bridget27
      @bridget27  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep! The method I used was taught by my driving instructor, and which I could use pretty consistently for my parks. It’s basically a step-by-step which once you memorize, you can replicate almost anywhere :) I’ve not actually done a parallel park since this test, so hoping the method is correct!
      This video was the closest I could find to my technique, with a few exceptions for visual cues etc, incase my explanation doesn’t make too much sense:
      th-cam.com/video/ivnRqTjqZKY/w-d-xo.html
      First, I’d pull up next to the parked car, and line my wing mirror with its wing mirror. I’d leave about a metre between the cars.
      Then, I’d reverse my car until my wing mirror was lined up with its rear door handle. (This was the case because the cars were similar lengths - if the parked car is longer than yours you may have to choose a different point on their car closer to the bumper.)
      At this point, I’d turn my steering wheel one full rotation to the left while stationary (as you can see on that attached video,) and reverse while holding the steering wheel at that position until the car was at an approximately 45 degree angle with the road. (This is different to the video, but either works. Other videos show this step quite well.)
      Then, at this 45 degree angle, I’d turn the steering wheel back to the straight position, and reverse in a straight line until the curb *just* disappeared from my rear view mirror, before stopping again. Obviously, this visual cue depends on how your mirrors are adjusted, so requires a bit of trial-and-error to figure out when to stop :)
      After stopping, I’d turn my steering wheel one full rotation to the right (or completely to the right as the video shows, but either works again,) and reverse until the car was lined up alongside the curb. Then, I’d move backwards or forwards until I was close to the curb, and not too close / far away from the car infront.
      While other methods involve moving the steering wheel while in motion, I prefer this method because it’s all step-by-step, so you can think about what your next move will be while stopped. I should also note that remembering to do your shoulder / mirror checks / indicating throughout the park is as equally important as the park itself!

      @@BreakingTheInsanity no worries! In the test I used the push and pull method, only because that’s how I was taught. From what I’ve heard, you’re allowed to use either method in your test, obviously so long as it’s not dangerous

    Hey im sittting mine tomorrow at sockburn, does it matter if you let the steering wheel slip through your hand to re center after a turn?

    • @bridget27
      @bridget27  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey! I think you should avoid that if possible, as it would appear to the testing officer that you’ve not got complete control of the steering wheel. (Although I don’t think you would get a critical error for it?) However, I didn’t see anything *exactly* against that in the “guide book,” other than to have two hands on the wheel and to not hold it from the bottom
