Very interesting exploration of the colonial fort. Very nice of your subscriber to show you around the fort and the vacinity. When she mentioned about the Portuguese, Dutch and English colonial past, that just reminds me of Melaka in Malaysia. Prior to this, never know that Sri Lanka was once colonized by Portuguese and Dutch, only know about tbe English part. That's is very fascinating.
@ Judy, Only the Brits ruled the whole island. The Portuguese & Dutch ruled about two thirds mainly the coastal regions. Partly due to the mountainous terrain , they were not able capture the central Kandyan kingdom which remained under local rule until 1815.
Many foreigners do not come to Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, the capital of the country, to visit the parks in and around the area (Diyatha Uyana). If you go there on weekends then you can go to the market but a little crowded
An interesting walk about in that historic Galle Fort. Wonderful to have a local, also a subscriber, to guide you around. Happy to know that she's pursuing her studies in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I notice that the architecture of the buildings in Galle is similar to the ones in Melaka and Penang. Nice tour in that museum too. That tree with hanging roots is known as Banyan tree. I saw quite a number of them in China and are well preserved. It's fun to learn some History from your video today. Great content, great vlog, am loving it. Kudos, Ken 💪
Hi Ken, very nice. We were at Galle today. We visiting from South Africa and really enjoying Sri Lanka. Thank you for your videos, been following for a while now.
You might be interested that while it was the Dutch as the Dutch East India Company who built the Galle Fort as well other forts in Sri Lanka in places like Matara, Jaffna, Trincomalee and more, a lot of the people who settled in Sri Lanka were not Dutch people but from all over Europe, and many had German roots too. There were also French, Italians, Swiss, and many others. The other forts are not in such good state, but are interesting too. There are other Dutch era buildings across the Island, houses and churches but also a few administrative buildings too. The sentry box is to keep guard and look out for enemies or intruders, to protect the fort.
I love the fort and it's history; it's one of the reasons I chose Galle over other cities in SL to live in. The diver is a friend of mine - I always hire him to jump when I see him; it's his only source of income. One thing that interests me is the way the fort was built. The sea walls are high and strong, but the side facing inland has by far the biggest and most extensive fortifications. This tells us that the Dutch felt more threatened by local people than by Europeans in ships.
That tree is called Pokok Beringin in malaysia. Usually ppl use the long roots to make swings out of it. Sri Lanka is like msia then. Colonized by Portuguese first, and then Dutch and Britsh. But we have Japanese invasion after that. Also the town looks like Penang Georgetown with old style architectural shoplots. And the Dutch church stone writings on the floor also has similarities to the A Famosa Fort tombstones.
Hi Ken 👋🏻 how lovely to meet up with your subscriber , you'll get so much information from her 👍 the fort reminds me of the one we have in Penang called Fort Cornwallis. Really beautiful especially the heritage buildings , amazing architectural brings us back to the colonial era. I was also studying in a girls school 😅 and there are boys school and mix schools in Malaysia. And my school was built around 1938 , so as my grandmother and aunties were from that same school 🤣🤣🤣 ok then...see you in the next vlog Ken 🥰👍
3:10 That is a Banyan Tree Brother. Since the tree is so wide it has additional external roots that extend to the ground to protect it from falling due to strong winds...
Galle fort. I have many memories in galle fort when we were schooling we used to go there often and had nice times there ..thank you for visiting and promoting this beautiful place .enjoy
They are Banyan trees, and they are to be found everywhere in Asia especially Southeast Asia! How is it that you’ve never seen it before, being you’ve been to Malaysia and Thailand.
2:44 The roots that are hanging is from the parasitic strangler fig. They attached to other tree. The host tree is in the middle. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strangler_fig
Stay strong Srilanka, we whole nation of Pakistan support you. 🇵🇰❤️🇱🇰 This economy crisis will go away and world would witness Lankan's courage. Never give up 💪
Hi Ken! Do you hear a bird in the beginning of the video? That was a “Kohá” (Cuckoo bird) which is considered mainly in this Sinhala New Year season in Sri Lanka.
Ah, the famous galle fort. Go in and you will be transported to a different world which feels like you are in a different country. I remember the old days when it was less touristy....
The Banyan tree is one of my favourite trees!! They have aerial roots that grow down towards the ground and then they will slowly thicken and grow into secondary trunks. In really old trees the main trunk will die but the tree will keep growing for centuries after if allowed to. There is one I have seen in Kolkata India that has over 700 secondary trunks! Happy Travels
Dear Ken, if you are really interested of more historical places (actually beyond dutch and Portuguese invasions), the main chapters written in Anuradhapura and Polonnarwa kingdoms which are situated in north central province. If u visit thise historical places you will get a clear picture of the sri lankan history..!
First Europeans were the Portuguese in 14th Century, Then the Dutch and finally the English. Hence Malacca shares the same historical heritage. Sentry = guard - so the Sentry box was the guard room.
The original Fort was built by the Portuguese more than 400 years ago, though the Dutch can take credit for the fortifications which were done 100 years later.
Galle fort and its surrounding buildings are a UNESCO heritage site. The owners of individual homes or buildings are not allowed to change its structure
Hi Ken.I enjoyed every videos you added here in Sri Lanka. Nice content and very attractive. If you are more interested in history of Sri Lanka please visit Northern Central Province. There you can see the old kingdoms which are old more than 1000 years.Keep it up good work.Stay safe

Hey Ken, You can probably see the Chaos in the country now. Stay Safe and try to find happiness among chaos. Sri Lankan people will always help you and take care of you. May you be well and happy.

( except Japanese were around 1942-1945 ) ..And meeting a subscriber that actually studied in Malaysia ...Nice!! ...Sentry Box = Guard House... As always, thanks for showing us around ...Stay safe, be vigilant, take care mate.

Actually, Portuguese and Dutch could capture only part of the country by various ways( including wars and taking advantages of political situations). Portuguese was almost defeated by the Sri Lankans(see - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Mulleriyawa). But, as Sri Lankans didn't have a navy at that time (there was a navy several centuries before that) they couldn't completely get rid of them. They had to get the support from Dutch. Initially Dutch were friends with the king but later Sri Lankans realized that it was a mistake. English took everything from Dutch, but couldn't take all parts of the country initially and had many battles. Ultimately, by bribing some of the king's officials they could start a coup and capture the king. After signing a treaty(not by war) finally they took control of the country in 1815. The treaty was controversial. The English version was completely different from the Sinhala version(which Sri Lankan's signed). There was a freedom fight in 1817-1818. With the betrayals of some, it failed and led to a great massacre. -en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Rebellion_of_1817%E2%80%931818
