You can get help with NemID in every municipality in Denmark, (not only where You live) providing you show up in person with correct dokumentation. Thank you for a good video.
As someone who works with developing public service web sites it is SO neat to have an "almost" plug'n'play 2FA component to handle federated security. Also note that NemID will be replaced by MitID in 2021 (due to tender requirements), if you want to geek about it on a deeper tech level. Finally - thank you for the video :)
Nice hat Maya 😀 there were some problems implementing the nemid in Denmark and abit of a resistence from the older part of the population. But over time people have gotten used to it.
As someone who has worked in FinTech I can tell you EXACTLY why the US does not not have anything like NemID while pretty all of Europe has it. There is actually a kind of dark side to this. Reality is that consumer rights are quite weak in the US. If somebody access your bank account in the US and steals your money, then you will most likely get the blame. The banks don't hold much responsibility. US laws tend to side with big business. You will somehow have to prove this was not your fault, which can be difficult. In Europe the roles are swapped. Consumer rights, especially in Nordic countries are very strong. That means that if somebody use your bank account illegally, the bank has to prove that you didn't keep your login safe. This difference created a very strong incentive in Europe to create two-factor authentication systems for banks, because security breaches would quickly become an economic expensive for European banks. The US had no such incentive because it is the consumers who will have to take the hit most of the time. However this is going to change in the US as well, or may already have changed. I have worked with companies here in Europe trying to introduce two-factor authentication to American banking system because they are going to need it when government applies stricter regulations.
Finally one of the videos I have asked about for some time 😁. Btw with all the times you said two factor authentication it could just as well have been a giveaway to the person who counted all the times it was said😂. Also good you liked the Kaj Kage A shame you probably won't understand the songs from Kaj og Andrea
In the Netherlands, we have DigID. It is only used for government stuff, taxes and insurance. Banks all have their own log in systems, Rabobank gives you a scanner that you put your card in and then scan a qr for a one time use number for confirmation of the transaction. On top of that, we have ridiculously easy to use mobile pay and digital transactions, like iban, tikkie and wiebetaaltwat.

What I find is insanely impressive with this kind of system which is similar i Sweden is that you can log in to a new place, maybe first time log in to start a business, first time checking your pension, start new bank. For all these usages we can access an begin with only logging in. There is no signing up. All Swedes are ready and you initiate through logging in. It is incredible. Thanks for interesting vids.

I actually wanna say thank you for this video. NemID has a really bad reputation among most people and we are often super annoyed by it, like you also were. But hearing about how things are in the US and your perspective of being "annoyed, yet appreciative" was actually super nice for me as a Dane, who doesn't have the reference of how life is without NemID.
I used to be really annoyed by NemID, back when you had to use this very annoying keycard with all the codes on. But after I began using the NemID app I've come to like it a lot. It's actually super easy... barely an inconvenience. :-)
It’s also used now when we shop on the internet, i really love that, because then nobody Can use your visa card without the code you get on a textmessage
Just be sure to set a PIN on your SIM-card, and set your phone to NOT display the message until you've unlocked the phone. Otherwise a thief can snag your phone, and use that as two-factor authentication without even having to unlock it.
oh wow, i thought a lot of places had their version of NemID going on! Definately US among those places! Glad you feel good about it, even if it takes a little more time getting through and done with stuff

In Sweden we have BankID, either as an app on your phone, or as a file on your computer. But no card. To log in to your bank we have a small device where you log in with your atm pin and it generates a 8 digit pin.
We have the same concept in Sweden called BankID. Works very well with health care, banks, credit cards, tax authority etc., i.e. anywhere were you have to authenticate you are really you and the only thing I need is my Phone.
nemID ( now replaced by MitID enables the high degree of digitalization in Denmark, such as doing our taxes easily online, e-Boks and direct digital access to your patient records and hospital appointments etc. You should do another video on e-Boks.
Can’t find it in the comments, but I am convinced that someone must have mentioned the NemID app? Anyway, that thing takes the clunkiness of using the card all the time out of the equation. At the same time you won’t run out of logins. So that has been a nice step forward. Especially if you have a company NemID and a private one. So - no cards, just apps. There have been some 3rd party apps offering to scan your card and sort of give you the digital feeling of the analogue card. Great video btw. You should also try the cake “napoleonshat”! That’s a dream come true 😀 Enjoy Denmark 👍🏼

Cocio a good solid reason to get mobilpay, I totalt understand Maya. And Nem-id makes so many Things Easy, Never boring to Tune in a listen to your findings while Living in Denmark👍
Digital signatur where nemID is version 2.0 was invented by PBS, DM data, KMD and TDC and owned by TDC, this was back in 2002/2003, then in 2010 Nets came with the NemID solution since the Digital signatur wasn’t Secure enough. So no Banks was behind this. MobilePay on the other hand was done mainly by Danske Bank but is it’s own Company now. SWIFT was a cooperation between the largest Banks in Denmark but after Danske Bank broke out due to there mobile pay solution, SWIFT died in Denmark even though the solutions was different, so now we have Mobile pay in DK and SWIFT in Sweden, Finland and Norway.
The centralised nature of NemID is definitely a good thing usability-wise. It also poses a security risk, though. NemID can (and sometimes must) be used for many things other than just logging in to websites (including banks); e.g. for signing legal documents, including to sell your house. NemID is actually based on public and private keys, and in a setup like that, YOU as the user would normally be the only one to hold your own private key. This is not the case with NemID, though. All private keys are stored by Nets, which poses (at least) two problems: First of all, it's a giant target for hackers, because you only have to hack one place, and all of a sudden you have 3+ million people's private keys. Second, as Nets holds your private key, they could authenticate/authorise actions on your behalf (sell your house, send legally binding e-mail signed with your key), and there would be no way for you to prove that you were not the one to perform the actions. Before NemID, we actually did hold our own private keys. The private key was even generated on the local computer. But it was just way too difficult for "normies" to use, so it was never really widely adopted. NemID made it much more usable (well, making it basically mandatory by law helps too, of course), but private keys really shouldn't be stored centrally.
what we had before nemid. was actually on for the banks. I cant remember what was used for the public services. but you had to get a special one time code when calling the bank or something. that we could use to create our login for the bank. that would then create a hidden file on your system you had to select when loging in to the bank account. so you could mostly only login from that one computer. so nemid was a huge improvement.
Two factor identification is basically a necessity in this modern world. I also recommend using a password manager, which makes it much more likely that you not only remember all your passwords as well as using very secure and unique passwords. My password manager also lets me know if there's been security breaches at any of the sites where I have a user account and password. The last thing to consider is using a VPN. If you're using all of these, you're definitely much less likely to become a victim of online fraud or hacking.
So interesting watching this video, it is indeed something most Take for granted... if you could change just one thing with NemID, Eboks or other public services online, what would it be?
Keeping a password/loginbook, in your bookshelve is a good idea, if you have multiple places you need login acess to, and only use some of them every 3rd or 4th year.

Educated in IT security and privacy are a couple of topics taught. At least here in DK. Theres actually 3 factors of security, NemID use 2 to 2½ factors. The 3 factors are: - something you know (username/password) - something you have (key card, dongle or phone) - something you are (fingerprint, face, retina, biometrics in general) You can, of course, multiply every factor to increase the level of security, but those are the 3 basic pillars (for instance requiring both a dongle and a key card, or require both face and fingerprint). Anyway, third factor is difficult to do without invading the privacy of the person. Which is why I think NemID gets to 2½ factor at most... fingerprint and/or face recognition is done entirely on the phone level, so that data is never sent across the internet. Anyway, the newer danish passports now have photo and fingerprint encoded in their RFID, but they have no password. Which is why you need both your NemID and passport to set up the drivers license app on your phone (it basically grabs your photo directly from your passport). When I worked with medical software I got to understand how to handle very personal data, but also how frivolously the CPR (social security number) is passed around between systems (despite being encrypted, those systems do not verify each others ID). So NemID is necessary to secure the most sensible info. But, all in all, we are one of the most registered populations in the world, according to my previous employer, which gives us some immediate benefits, but it's also something I doubt is very compatible with the majority of USAns... US just has a lot of people who does not appreciate being registered, because big brother I guess? A fair perspective, as I see it, but it does make things complicated.
@@simonquvang6073 You're entirely correct. But a person knowing your full name, CPR and home address can still get a long way. That's a strong reason to support/require NemID verification.
Great video. The Nem-ID thing might be a little annoying since you have to do that extra step, but it is likely worth it in todays world. Important extra info for people outside Denmark: 1: It is now required for all e-shopping here that payment uses the extra Nem-ID steps. 2: The whole Nem-ID thing is also tied to the E-box. Every dane have an E-box (its the law). ALL - and I repeat ALL communication from the state, city, bank, doctor and so on goes there. It is like an extra secure email. It also means that unless you got special exception, you ONLY get digital documents - no paper.
Hey, you know you can get the app on your phone, called NemID? You won't have to use your actual card, you simply login and swipe right (like mobilepay) when you login to example your bank account.

Trifork, the company who developed NemID are going public in two weeks. They also developed MobilePay with Danske Bank. Is has been listed before but now they want to be back as a listed company on the stock exchange of Copenhagen.
This was interesting and not boring at all👍 Remember not to show or give your Nemid numbers or information to anybody. Not even people that claims to be from a bank or the police. Btw you need the nemid app(and not the card) to buy things on the internet. I haven’t used my nemid card for a couple of years
Interesting to hear your point of view on this subject. I am Swedish living in Denmark, and I think there is a slightly better version in Sweden, called BankId. One step less. With NemId you login first and then accept. With BankId you skip the first step and accept the request with your login. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts, as Americans, on e-boks. This feels like a really important step to have less paper documents, receiving your mail in your private inbox, from banks, officials etc. I really like it. Hope you are enjoying your stay in Denmark. /Jessica

If you're short of ideas for "Try it on a tuesday" ....well, here is one suggestion!
When the weather gets a little bit better, you should definetly go to Frederiksdal and rent a canoe and spend a couple of hours on Mølleåen.
I believe you live just north of Copenhagen so it's not far from you.
My wife and I do it every spring and its just so nice.
As a former expatriate living in Saudi Arabia (dad had a job there and I attended to an American international school for 4 years), I have been watching your Chanel for a while now and I love your content!
Living in Frederiksværk myself now, I immediately recognized “Rådhuset” behinde Maya and I wondered. “What an odd place for some one living I CPH to go and get their Nem I’d fixed?” Was that deliberate as for you to make a trip of it?
By the way if you ever visit Frederiksværk again there is an amazing Burger/Bagel joint by the last roundabout before Hundested called Grillværket. This place makes a fantastic Bearnaise burger (among other good stuff) of which I can’t recommend enough.
I wish you many a happy times I Denmark.
Thanks!
We were up there because Maya goes to efterskole close to Hundested. We needed to do it during her school day so we did it at the closest rådhuset to her school. We are there every so often picking her up and dropping her off so we will have to check out the place you mention during one trip.
You guys are adorable❤️ thanks for showing NemID some love. So many Danes take it for granted and feel annoyed but it’s actually pretty awesome. The app really helps though:) it’s one of the many things that are just super easy accessible and organised in Denmark but that we Danes take for granted. After having spend time in the US and Asia I appreciates lot of things here:)
Well. Being a programmer i would like to thank you from all of us for trying to make the world more secure!
More people need to start securing their online presence. We see way too much scamming and identity theft these days. :(
I love your positive angle😊 I must admit beeing born in 1961 it's been quite the jorney getting comfortable on line. I guess the perspective of security is the way to think about nem id.
Did you know that reason for not everything having nemid is that is costs a fair amount of money to be connected to nemid. Its actually a company, making money. Which is why the state has entered with yet another provider, so now we get MITiD.
Its the same in Sweden and think Norway( it’s called the same ) BankID it’s so good it’s sad that other countries don’t have it I really did think they did in USA now 🤯
Don't even start to take a look at the hoops US citizens have to go through just to do their taxes.
Every european country probably has it. In estonia its called smartid

Back in the day before NemID you had to have a key file on your computer to log into your bank account. Don't remember what you used in other places like SKAT and such. But NemID certainly is much easier than it ever was!
For SKAT you had your CPR-number (like the American SSN), and a "tast selv" code on the top of your tax return letter.
I can barely remember that, and I turned 18 in the first half of 2008. So we have had NemID for around 12 years.

We have a similar Bank Id system in Sweden... I've never even considered it, it's just normal...
Every european country probably has this system
We have something like this in Sweden, called Bank-id.
We logg in with it everywhere and identify us when we shop online.
I love to hear your perspectives on Danish things 💖

As someone who works with developing public service web sites it is SO neat to have an "almost" plug'n'play 2FA component to handle federated security. Also note that NemID will be replaced by MitID in 2021 (due to tender requirements), if you want to geek about it on a deeper tech level. Finally - thank you for the video :)
It is so funny as a Dane to watch these videos because these things you talk about is just so normal for us here in Denmark 🇩🇰
On a similar note, can you explain the difference between, doing taxes in the US and in Denmark.
Hello Again I wanted to tell you you can buy a key hanger nem idea its a lot easyer than the card
Also good you liked the Kaj Kage
A shame you probably won't understand the songs from Kaj og Andrea
In the Netherlands, we have DigID. It is only used for government stuff, taxes and insurance. Banks all have their own log in systems, Rabobank gives you a scanner that you put your card in and then scan a qr for a one time use number for confirmation of the transaction. On top of that, we have ridiculously easy to use mobile pay and digital transactions, like iban, tikkie and wiebetaaltwat.
I also find the lack of security on card payments in the US is strange (no pin, just signature) for large payments.
Agreed, I didn't even get into that. When in the US, there would be fraud one of my cards at least once a year. It is ridiculous how easy it is.
as a Dane, it is really nice to follow you guys in here. It puts everything into perspective, and it seems like you are having a good time here. Awesome to follow you, and I hope you guys will have a great stay :D Never have I been thinking about how great Nem-id is before, but man, it really is something, right? haha xD oh btw Kaj Kage is normally something we got as kids, and when we grow up most danes would choose something else :D glad you enjoy it!
You forgot to sing the Kaj song. Look it up on DR tv. Kaj and Andea are a big part of the cultur. And at Aarhus universitet, ther is a very serius comperticion "Kajkagekast".
Thank you, guys. Wonderful to see 3rd party reviews of my country's contraptions 😉
Please do some more.
How about "reaction videos" where you tell friends in the US about some of the things You've experienced here?
I actually wanna say thank you for this video. NemID has a really bad reputation among most people and we are often super annoyed by it, like you also were. But hearing about how things are in the US and your perspective of being "annoyed, yet appreciative" was actually super nice for me as a Dane, who doesn't have the reference of how life is without NemID.
I used to be really annoyed by NemID, back when you had to use this very annoying keycard with all the codes on. But after I began using the NemID app I've come to like it a lot. It's actually super easy... barely an inconvenience. :-)
@@lbernau Haha! I know that reference! Wanna pitch a movie idea?
“Most people”. Only among the liberal (in Danish context) who doesn’t like anything government controlled.
@@Snarcksa they wont be able, because they need a nem-id number too :)

🇸🇪👍
nemID ( now replaced by MitID enables the high degree of digitalization in Denmark, such as doing our taxes easily online, e-Boks and direct digital access to your patient records and hospital appointments etc. You should do another video on e-Boks.
In Jylland we eat these with the grab of a hand, good job Youngs 👌🏻😀
true that. :D
You are so uncivilized over there that im not surprised by that ;p
I definitely recommend getting the NemID app for your phone. It’s so much more convenient on the go than the code card.
That’s a dream come true 😀

Fun fact in regards to banks being liable to fraudulent transactions. It was actually the banks in Denmark that invented NemID.
In Norway it is still called BankId, but is now used for a lot of other things.
Not invented, but cooperated to create the system. And at the moment it is owned and managed by an Italian company
@@kimf.wendel9113 which means we are screwed!
As a native of Denmark there was even a few facts about NemID I didn't know 😁
I really hope you guys are enjoying your new home.
It is good to hear you on it ;)
The centralised nature of NemID is definitely a good thing usability-wise.
I cant remember what was used for the public services. but you had to get a special one time code when calling the bank or something. that we could use to create our login for the bank. that would then create a hidden file on your system you had to select when loging in to the bank account. so you could mostly only login from that one computer. so nemid was a huge improvement.
yes i remember the file thing. My parents had that. you actually got a temporary file on your computer just to login. It was a hassle.
Sooo ... when will you guys be doing your first videos in Danish ;-) ?
Omg ! You are close to Hundested!- do you normally come to TimeWimder?

Educated in IT security and privacy are a couple of topics taught. At least here in DK. Theres actually 3 factors of security, NemID use 2 to 2½ factors. The 3 factors are:
- something you know (username/password)
- something you have (key card, dongle or phone)
- something you are (fingerprint, face, retina, biometrics in general)
You can, of course, multiply every factor to increase the level of security, but those are the 3 basic pillars (for instance requiring both a dongle and a key card, or require both face and fingerprint).
CPR is and has never been more than a username/identifier, security wise. That it has been used as anything else is a scandal.
Important extra info for people outside Denmark:
1: It is now required for all e-shopping here that payment uses the extra Nem-ID steps.
You won't have to use your actual card, you simply login and swipe right (like mobilepay) when you login to example your bank account.
hahah working in tech, I love seeing you try to stop saying "authentication". Fun stuff. Thanks for the info. Love this.
And what do You think about "mobilpay" ?
Cool to hear your perspective as not Scandinavians! Thanks for that :)
We have the same in Norway. We call it MinID. Everything is electronic and we dont have to remember passwords. We dont have the paper its on the phone.
Nemid is charging name to MitID soon.
U guys also need to try out the cake called Gåsebryst (Goose-breast) from the baker.😛
and Træstamme (wood log), a classic available everywhere
Trifork, the company who developed NemID are going public in two weeks. They also developed MobilePay with Danske Bank. Is has been listed before but now they want to be back as a listed company on the stock exchange of Copenhagen.
Steam and blizzard have had authenticators for a long time and I turn on MFA on all accounts where available
nem-id has been around for longer i would believe.
what steam has isn't what Nem-id is. steam has 2fa
where nemid is a whole seperate system.
I would suggest having a password manager to prevent reusing passwords.

"...that people probably take for granted, cause if you never lived out of Denmark...."

😂
NemID was initated by the Banks.
Nut sure how spred it is, but I had some of the same in a babk out of Denmark
Hey thats the city hall of my hometown. Its not Hundested btw, but Frederiksværk.
Yeah, Maya is in efterskole in Hundested, so we needed to pick her up first to go to the townhall.

One *potential* issue with nemid is the centralized approach (especially considering previous (?) security issues, sever-side)
We even have drivers license as an app - but at this time it only works in Denmark - it requires a danish drivers license and ditto passport as the picture is imported from the pasport initially
Maybe something you missed. When my sister and brother came to visit me in Australia, they had a nemld card with 10 different codes on it, and they can only use each code once.
