- Tips for Getting Started in Discover University, courtesy of EA Game Changers. May help you decide if you want to buy the expansion. I was given a chance to play Discover University a couple days before release. It's a big pack, so it's impossible to really cover everything in one video. However, these tips should help you get started and have a good experience with you Sim's application to University and pursuing their degree of choice.

I want to clarify something from toward the end of the video - I did use door locks of course and highly recommend them. My footage around talking about issues with noise/roommmates made people think that I should've done that one simple fix. But the issue for me was actually noise from outside my Sim's dorm room and nothing could be done about that. You can tell them to stop but not make it completely halt as they seem to have violins in their inventories. I'm not keen on dorms, but many others will be.
Any other play i have with this pack will be either in Britechester dorms (better location, less frustration and bike usage) or from a home lot. I felt a need to try dorms even though I wouldn't likely be a big fan - so it's just not for me. I think the roommates system is fine and a lot of people will love it. Take the Research and Debate skill and you might find new ways to order them around :)

@@Nicole-ru9tu Probably because you have to have finished University for your Sim to have to start reimbursing his loan and be late on the payement, so it might take a while for people to get there :)

Yep sure. And naturally, I find that dorm play just isn't for me but have friends that WANT this chaos. SO I do share my opinion but it's only from my perspective. I found the violins a daily thing, but I got a bad roll of the dice so to speak. Some people will have really calm good roommates.
And realistically it is a pain in the butt. lol University isn't for me either, but I can see some people having fun with avoiding their dorm to study b.c their roommates are annoying.

@@CarlsSimGuides Eheh, the dices were not so generous with me and gave me 3 violins players that want to play all the time! with radio on and Tv... So I started to do mean interaction with them and become there ennemi. Then I saw all the coding that need to be review, like when you actually are ennemi, since they know you they gonna come to you and ask you for keg stand, wich does not feel realistic. What I liked though, is that I found some note left to some of the roomate I dispised, basically complaining about me!
I just wish, the update before the pack was still working for me, the gameplay after that update was fanstastic, but now, this is just rificulously annoying, like I can understand that my sims are going to eat at the same table all together, that make sense, but when I want to make homework alone, far away from them and try the interaction to make my homework, my sim will walk all the way to there table on the other side of the lot, or in another room, joining them basically, instead of taking the nearest table spot. Also, I tried to place the homework on the table and start the interaction there, but the sim take the homework and go somewhere else not very convenient here.
So my point is that recently the patch corrected some issue where you sims would not join the dining table to eat, and that is still working I think, they also gather together for eating, but they should code it differently for reading and homework, prefering the nearest spot avaible for your sims and so you could go on your room and make your homework there instead of going into the farest room and use a desk that is not yours.
The free time thing was super annoying, I had a sim get an F because she got pregnant by Santa and the baby definitely got in the way of completing homework and essays for 4 classes plus she was going to a soccer job part time? It was a nightmare.
At least roommates don’t shave and leave their hair in shower like mine did my first semester.
paps or use all of your brand new expensive pan set with metal utensils, come into your room every SECOND of the day while your studying and wanting to “chat”, use 4x the amount of toilet paper you use, agree to split shampoo and conditioner, but once it’s their turn to buy they’ve decided we should just buy for ourselves..... talk on the phone with 4 different people one after the other for hours each day, clean absolutely nothing.... hahah these sims will be amazing.
For my first two months I had to share a shower with four ppl. My room was right next to it, and one of my roommates always would bring over girls for some real life noisy "shower woohoo". :P Also no one ever cleaned.
I stayed in another dorm with 12 ppl for over two years before I got my own flat. Have so many stories, haha!
Or start cooking at 5 am while your room is right next ti the kitchen 😊😊

Think that is the real advantage of having University. It makes less sense now to start your game with a YA.
@@johannvandebron986 Agreed. I definitely feel like the other life stages will benefit now because instead of being kinda bored through the child/teen years, I can get them ready for university.
Trust me, you don’t want to be a mom in university. You’ll be tending to the baby instead of homework. What will you do for income to feed the baby?and pay bills because you can’t have a baby on campus. 😂

To be fair, it adds some realism into the game a bit. There are mothers who go through university while they still have young children. One of my close friends is doing this right now.
Also, the game is specifically set up so that this is an option for simmers. Yeah it's hard, but that's life. Y'know like "Play With Life" which is one of the taglines of The Sims franchise?

A tip of my own: if it’s a ‘holiday’ like Winterfest on the day of your final exam (ie your last class), your Sim won’t go to their class on their own. You HAVE to click go to class or you miss the exam and ruin your GPA! Found this out to my detriment!

Hayley Miller - It doesn’t seem so. The classes happen on the same day regardless. I noticed that the ‘Go to class’ button was there during Winterfest so I clicked it, and my Sim arrived halfway through his final exam. He ended up with a B for that class and a C- for the one he’d missed that morning. 🤷♀️
@@HerHollyness - That seems like a bad oversight... They need to integrate it better with Seasons it sounds like, including class schedule on the calendar.
I'm not sure what the truth is here, but I thought I'd mention that James Turner missed his sims final exam because of a holiday too I think and still get an A. So they might get days off. Kind of like with careers and holidays. You're off, but you can choose to go anyway, and being "late" might detract from your performance.
Idk about ruin your GPA. My sim missed their final and still got an A+ (not at all realistic lol)

my first time playing, i enrolled my sim in 3 core classes, 1 elective, a early morning part time job as a barista, and a member of the ubrite spirit corps..... i thought everything was going to be fine.......

I was so happy when the next semester came and I enrolled my sim in 1 course and 1 elective so I had more time for partying and the college experience
I'm playing a single father juggling between taking care of his toddler, working at a fast food chain, and his grades. The poor man could only catch forty winks before he has to get up from his bed again lmao
i enrolled my sim in 4 courses and i'm dead managing all his needs & assignments 💀 but yes i should say it's pretty realistic for some uni out there
@@ac8977 I'm level 10 at Diamond Agent branch and I can do 4 classes at the same time. The reason is because my classes are scheduled on monday, wednesday, and friday and my work as double diamond agent is scheduled at tuesday, thursday, and sunday. So I was able to take 4 degree for my sim which is Psychology (before I take my job so I could get promoted faster with my degree), along with Physics, Computer Science, and Villainy while I was working.
Tips : The schedule is depends on your first enroll day. Ex: I enrolled on friday, so I got scheduled on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Another tip regarding going to class. If you live off campus, they’ll disappear right at class time and just go to the class rabbithole like they would for a job. It eliminates the need to try to walk to the classroom in time. I honestly wish it worked that way if you live on campus too because I was constantly late for class when I lived on campus just because of how long it took to walk from the dorm. 😂 Once I moved off-campus and let the game pull me automatically into a class rabbithole, I was never late again!

I'm in my fourth year of university (5 courses), and this semester I have:
- 3 final exams
- 5 final projects
- 3 final presentations
Imagine finishing a semester or university in a week

@@helldatrev Depends the options you choose, you can also choose longer aging options, same for the seasons, they can either be 1 week, or 2 or 4
I wish we could do the same for semesters, choose if it will be 1 or 2 or 4 weeks or idk
tbf you probably take more than twelve classes and finish a term in one week

Your dorm mates bring home cooked meals to the dorm as well so you can find regular meals to eat for free, and not have to live off of microwave meals, especially if you don’t have the money.

My roommates at foxbury were so passive aggressive. My actual roommate had a bladder problem and went everywhere and people were so passive aggressively mad about it. They left notes by her bed and I would lock her out. She eventually moved out mid semester. Sims university is so savage

Yes, his guides are always super useful - I've had his page bookmarked for a long time already. Came for the cheats, stayed for the loads of information that make my game much better.
Having just finished my first run through University I would strongly encourage maxing R&D before starting. You get through the work much faster. I also created a “Dorm Clean Crew” club and invited all my dorm mates. While it didn’t eliminate all of the nasty stuff, it did keep it down to more bearable levels. Also if you use rewards points from aspirations to get “never weary” and “forever full” rewards and that saves a ton of time.
I would just like to say please continue to do your reviews. You give valuable information and since I've begun following your channel I've found that I'm more confident in my Sims4 purchases in regards to my gameplay. Keep up the good work. I look forward to your future reviews.

Thank you for these tips!! I got straight As in college IRL... but flunked out of Sims University because none of this is explained up front! So I was just confused why I wasn’t doing well in any of my classes the whole time lol 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
i have a sim that got into uni, started dating don lothario, he convinced her to move out of the dorms and quit uni all together, then had a toxic relationship, broke up, then started uni again, started dating her bff’s cousin, continued uni, got pregnant, gave birth, got married, and only had one term left of uni just so she can become a lawyer.
she’s in language and literature distinguished degree in britechester, living out of campus

I agree with everything you've said! I've downloaded new lots for the entire new britechester world. Another tip, when you're sims are either studying, writing essays, etc. make them listen to music at the same time so their joy doesn't drop to the floor!
I agree with you that they should’ve had a metric on the careers tab to show how you’re doing in class, like they do for high school and for careers. It was quite a shock when I nearly flunked out my first term; not even realizing I was doing poorly until the final grades came in!
This reminded me soo much of my college days that I ended up stressed. So I signed my Sim for 3 lessons and one elective, at same time he was working for gigs in the acting career since that's what he is pursuing plus trying to be famous through public appearances, social media management and forging friendships with celebrities. Each course has daily homework, +project presentation + thesis paper +final exam. There's also extra lessons if you wanna take them and once you wrote the paper you wanna re do it to get better quality. Same for the presentation + practice it. It's very difficult to manage everything imagine each homework takes like 2-3 hours.
my hot take about graduation being a rabbit hole: my irl graduation was SUPER boring, really long, and stressful. it wouldn't make for fun gameplay, so i'm happy they left it out. the more important and fun part is what you do AFTER the graduation ceremony; often people will have little parties or go for dinner or something! and that's totally possible here! (: similar hot take with classes being rabbit holes, classes are boring and if i could ever skip a class, i did. most of the time you're just copying down a ton of info without actually learning any of it (obviously, this isn't ALWAYS the case -- some classes are more discussion based or hands-on, but the majority of my classes were your boring everyday lecture). the learning comes when you're at home studying and working on projects, and talking to your roomies or friends about your classes. never thought i'd be actively defending rabbit holes in the Sims 4, but here we are!
So was mine. It was simply several hours of sitting and watching other people getting their diplomas on stage interrupted from time to time with "entertainment" from "talented" students and boring speeches about how we are entering into a new part of our lives (or something like that).
My brother's graduation featured an alumni talking about cardboard boxes for an hour. Thank you, Maxis, for not including this.

I totally got 3 As and 1 F on the first semester. Getting to class is difficult. The need to improve that. Also not knowing how you are doing is difficult. These classes are like real college and don't forgive mistakes lol.
You visit during office hours or you can email your professor through your phone and they will update you on all your classes
Yes! Class was 8 am, my sim didn’t get to the building till 8:45. If you live off campus you don’t really have that problem but in the dorms it’s terrible
Every sim in my game bring cooked gourmet meals to the dorm so there's always food around to eat lol. I just shove it in the fridge and it keeps longer which is good.
honestly im shocked that they even had some features that bleed over into other packs like the roommate system, because the sims 4 hardily ever crosses over systems like that.

@@jeromealday614 yeah its one of the restrictions they have for sims 4. all the packs have to be standalone, and all packs have to be able to be played on toaster computers. there is a good interview with the sims lead and james turner where she goes over the second one at least.

Considering how much people cried when they've added cross over features, because people claimed it "forced" you to buy other packs (it didn't) I'm not surprised they don't want to do it again.

Your guides help so much when I get stuck. To make my life easier I always ALWAYS have my sims kids max their toddlers skills, complete all the child aspirations and do the scouts activity. It allows them to start their life being able to gain all skills so much quicker. It’s so much easier
I need a mod to change the prices of University.

I want this too! And some other things like the ability for sims to get juiced and shower woohoo with new animations and pixels instead of closet-animations with clothes. So many animations are used over and over again for different things. Such a shame.

I enjoy how bad the way classes are displayed is. Sims 4 has been pretty easy to get through and this adds so much challenge in a hellish way. Took two classes and one elective, accidentally took on the Athletic scholarship, not realizing that would mean joining the soccer team. My Sim barely has time for ANYTHING. It's a micromanagement hell and I love it.
Oh also thanks for the tip about the new skill speeding up homework! That will help a lot.

Ah... yeah, that's something I'll fix going forward. I play in 1440p to get good quality video but we have the new UI scaling option and I"ll make use of it. Thanks for the feedback.

It doesn't. My sim's roommates are playing the violin constantly, sometimes three of them at the same time. When I told them to stop, they left passive aggressive notes by my bed.

It doesn't. I have it on my dorm and I usually have 3 radios on and 2 people playing violin right next to each other most days. The violins...omg I want to strangle them...
This is a really good review, thank you! I liked the sarcasm too. In the future I'd find it even better if you scaled up your UI a bit, I like to pause to read the game text but I couldn't for this video because it was so small on my laptop screen.

Did NOT know you could drag the class schedule thing up - helps so much!!
In preparing the Sim, it is good to spend 1 week finishing as many aspiration points as possible, and get the Observer trait (good to see all your roommate’s traits at once) plus Steel Bladder trait. Steel Bladder will save yourself Uni Life. It is pretty easy... I usually skip around the different aspirations to get points quickly.
Yep, I get all the aspirations rewards that reduces the rate the needs go down, including social, hygiene and sleep.

Whenever I enroll my sims and let them live in dorms, I make sure they're either a spell caster or vampire. Preferably a vampire since the "vampiric run" is super helpful in getting to classes or doing anything at all. Whenever I command my sims to study, homework, or read a book to learn skills, I notice as a normal being they take 20 mins (in game) getting out the object and then roaming around getting a chair to sit and read or study when there's literally a chair in their room or bed to sit, and they repeat their seek-and-study thing for anytime they study or do homework. So being a vampire with vampiric run really helps them getting around and speeding up their animations. Of course spell casters can teleport to class but they still struggle to move around the dorm finding a seat to study or read their book. And also I find that a vampire sim can max 2 to 3 skills in a night just by having the scout trait from collecting scout badges as a teenager, having the night owl, speed reader, and servant in rewards trait, in addition with the university study spot and peace and quite place lot traits, vampire sims can max their skills super fast within a night if they too have their upgraded "master of darkness" passive ability in their vampire skill tree. And not to mention their OP ability "compel for deep drink" ability in which I use for those annoying violinists in my dorms, just click vampire-> compel for deep drink on any violinist and they all pass out after a good sucking time (I might have ruined their GPA by making them sleeping past their classes, but who cares I didn't enroll in for my distinguished honor just to hear them faking tourrettes with their violins everyday)
I love ur guides. Ur dont just complain and complain. U share ur veiw point, not yelling at other people. People have been wanting this for years complaing because they dont have it. But when they get it they STILL complain

I am so relieved to have a basically super vampire that never worries about needs for university, everything was already available to my eyes and I found it quite easy, especially flying as a bat in Foxbury saved me a lot of time, I chose the more expensive campus housing and it didn't auto give me a roommate, I was rarely there though as the homework does take awhile
I'm excited for this pack. One of the things I did most with Sims3 was to send my sims to college.

As someone who liked dorms...The 'auto family addition' pisses me right the hell off. Didn't they do something like that in Sims 3? Live in a dorm, suddenly have control over EVERYBODY in the dorm building? Makes me long for the systems from Sims 2. That said I did really enjoy Sims 3 not having a lot of rabbit holes on campus. You actually went to classes and such. That was awesome.

I honestly waited for this expansion pack for years. I'm so happy with it, but I wouldn't live on the campus. I like that you can accomplish the degrees from home. So now I have my degree, run a vet practice, and simultaneously have a full-time career that started off with WAY more money because of the degree. Love it.

Thanks! I figured this idea could be a decent tour of the pack and informative at the same time... without really being a 'review'. most of my issues were isolated to choices I made (like living in the dorm in the first place, or choosing Foxbury). This is why I felt it unfair to be generally negative toward the pack as a whole and think I should try a different playstyle next time.

I also have a maid a pretty small house without much counter space and three roommates. (With the dust on too)

Yep for sure.
Here is a tip. Enroll Vampires and Servos into four classes spellcasters can work with the fill all needs potion.
They can handle this for the most part. Though the servo is the most difficult due to increadibly long recharge and self repair times. If you have a sim who can tend your servo up it takes way less time.
The sarcasm is strong with Carl... LOL, I live for it with your videos. I agree, having Geoffrey Landgraab show up in the magic realm, or the mermaids going to college with you (and that weird flipper animation/sound they do, ugh) is not a great point for immersion and that's why typically I just delete all the pre-made sims unless I'm playing one of the default worlds without going to magic realm or Sulani. Sometimes I like to play with them but most of the time I'm happier to have randomly generated or sims I have downloaded from the gallery (with MCCC mod to help generate saved bin sims as townies). This makes the variety of sims a little better and will probably be mandatory for me with University since I expect my sims to be meeting new people from all over the world there, not the same townies over and over. Thanks for the tips about Foxbury being a bad layout with the dorms, I will probably have my sim live off campus to focus on the robotics. I have to have the robots! Great video as always!
My my friend says I need to setup worlds to have a better experience. I really don't want to have to do that and expect some customization options out of the games I play. Especially something as subjective as Sims. Some people want tons of vampires/celebrities, or mermaids at college I'm just not a fan.
@@CarlsSimGuides Oh I completely agree, there needs to be more option settings to turn off pre-made townies, or occults if you don't want them in a particular playthrough. The more baked-in options the better. EA has always relied heavily on the fanbase creating mods to add that layer of versatility while keeping their base game rather simplistic and focusing more on the expansions which are always popular. Their business model apparently works with the recent release of sales passing 5 billion for the Sims franchise as a whole. They still make more money off FIFA if you can believe that, haha! But so long as we have brilliant mod creators like Deaderpool/MCCC (a must-have for any long-term gameplay enjoyment) and great video and fansite creators like you Carl, I can still play the Sims 4 and enjoy it for what it is. Thank you for all that you do, I've learned a ton from your videos and guides (I'm doing a super sim challenge soon based on your guide for maxing skills!). Much love.
My husband found it on sale for Ps4 so he shagged it for me (and movie stuff). I am so excited to play! He is getting the chance to play his new game first so in the mean time I will Watch Carl's guide on it of course.

And I was really surprised that the pro-tip from a SimGuru to start your term in mid-week (e.g. Wed or Thur) in their 2 hour review video is not working out as well as starting on a Friday night.
I am testing play for different start days. And I am on my third Sim right now.
So far, Friday night is the best time. It gives you time to see your dorm, get a bed, buy supplies and apparel, fill up your form, say Hi to everyone, and spend the mornings of Saturday and Sunday finishing all homework, start writing Term Paper and Presentations, and go to all of the weekend Sports, Spirit Week, to set up your Sport/Organisation.
And in the following term, you feel happy on the Friday, shift out of one form if you like, and start doing homework again on weekends.
Plus, using the “free” weekends to go home to family is SO important!
Entering on Monday and starting on Tuesday is the worse ever.
Entering on Tuesday and staring on Wednesday is so-so.
My uni campus was very similar to Foxbury - it was built on the top/side of mountains so my legs got an epic workout walking from building to building. My roommate actually drove her car from one side of campus to the other.

That’s life for you in real life even though I don’t have the game , I think they could’ve done much more on the map and make more room because it’s a university but clearly they want to make it small which is a little upsetting but thanks for being awesome 👏🏼

As for music in the student dorm, you can do several things:
- Lock doors of your dorm for only you (and maybe your roommate);
- Lower the volume of the radio(s) so you can barely hear it.
There’s also dining halls at the Draper Den and grills outside in Britechester so you can make food and put it in your mini fridge from your inventory

My literal professors: I graded your research report but I will only give you an overall grade after the semester ends
A nice tip that i found out is that if you feed your sim tuna sandwiches (the ones that you put in a brown package) they will never have the negative mood with microwave or quick foods. The way that you do this is with a mini fridge that you buy in the "shop" of the University and you can use the balcons in the bathroom to do the sandwiches.

I noticed that not all careers are linked to degrees. Mixologist doesn’t have one. I wonder if there are others.
To be fair, the links between the degrees and the jobs currently do make sense. They’ve done it well. What would Mixologist link to? Bartenders IRL don’t generally need to be graduates...
@@HerHollyness Some companies want them to be licensed though. Would have been nice to see a little license for it. A simple piece of paper to hang on your wall.
HerHollyness I would expect Culinary arts to be linked to all food related careers. The only way to achieve both food related aspirations is through the mixology branch of the culinary career.

the first time i played the university pack and got accepted, and get to choose the subjects or courses ur gonna take.. i was so happy atm das why i chose the 4subjects or majors smthn like that.. n now that i get to really play it, i am bombarded with her hws lol i cannot, to my future sims, we'll make our lives easier nxt time
The violins. Those were such torture for me, too. I figured out that if my sim tried to talk to them, they’d put the violin away and I could just cancel the interaction and go back to what I was doing. Sometimes it worked without me having to stop what I was doing. Then the violinist usually figures out they’re stinky or about to pass out. Thanks for the tips, Carl. I totally agree the Foxbury campus was a hike to get across from that dorm.
