- Useful Tips and Secrets for The Sims 4 that is handy for both veterans and beginners alike. I've compiled this list of tips that can help you learn special abilities, how things work, and hidden features in The Sims 4's base game and expansion packs. If you're new, it will absolutely make you a better player at this game.
It lists out everything from features you might not realize exist to everything you need to know to succeed in the game. We discuss several game mechanics and should be an informative video, especially for people new to the game.
We go over special moodlets that give buffs outside of simple mood, special mixology drinks (Amygdelight and Snaggle Fluster) that increase skill gains by huge amounts. There is a special hidden aspiration some players might not know about, revolving around grilled cheese. The new ideal mood for careers is discussed, as well as the ability to eat harvested produce to get up to +6 mood boosts (absurdly powerful).
The true power of Sims 4's gourmet cooking is analyzed a bit, with a buff that drops hunger decay when you eat an excellent meal. The Loner Trait is discussed, as well as some other powerful traits you might consider for making your ultimate Sim.
Veteran players set up their game world to customize their play. Backing up save games can help ensure you don't lose all that hard work. The best moodlets for boosting emotions are discussed, as well as the relationship between skill and mood.
We look at bonus traits and how that works, so you can ensure your Sim gets a powerful starter. i also discuss weight gain and fitness in the Sims 4. Many players are unaware that foods have calories and will cause a Sim to gain weight due to a lack of a metabolism.
Many tips on websites are awful and some of the tips videos I investigated were out of date. A lot has changed in The Sims 4 given the 88 patches the developers have released in the past five years. I made this list for a modern game with all the tips i could think of without being totally exhausting. This is a great starting point for anyone new to the game.

Mine do it anyway. Anytime a clumsy sim cooks they inevitably burn the house down, with some exceptions.

All toddler's beds have energy 1, but if they're on the highchair, they can take a nap that gives them energy 3
The Littlest Big Bed also gives 3 energy

I like to put my family in their own club, it makes them more connected feeling and extra boosters when you have enough points.

Yes clubs can be the best hack, make a club where cooking, cleaning and gardening are the activities and invite everyone to your house and let them do all your work whilst you build skills 😂 just make sure you harvest before they come over bc they will pocket your harvestables.

Clubs are AMAZING. If you stack up the club perks right your sims will FLY through skill levels. I had a sim go from Charisma level 2 to Charisma level 9 in a single club gathering.

This is actually a weird thing I accidentally found out. If you're in the scientist career from get to work and create a "satellite dish" using the Invention Constructor, you can place the satellite dish on your home lot and a new channel will be available on your TV. I can't remember exactly what the channel was called, but it was an alien channel. It doesn't add much, but it's a nice detail in my opinion.

I load my toddlers with harvestables so I don't have to "feed" them. When they are hungry, they eat fresh fruits and vegetables. In fact, I keep my sims loaded up with fresh produce so that I don't have to have them cook and eat meals (which is time-consuming) so they can get on with other activities.

Handiness/upgrades tip: Adopt a dog. I found my Sim’s dog loves to go outside, dig around and drop upgrade parts inside the house. Nice free bonus.
ZombZombKatie My current family has 3 dogs (had to stop jogging in Brindleton Bay because I’d end up adopting a stray) and none have done the upgrade parts. Does it have to do with their traits? One dog and my cat are hunters, they bring fossils, pet toys, kid toys, and metals.

It takes sims like 4 hours to eat ONE plate of food.

I have a crazy ghost teen sim who died of drug overdose and now goes around towns killing ugly sims and collecting urns/gravestones for her huge graveyard. Her best friend is a vampire who sometimes tags along to suck blood of ugly townies before slaughtering them
When playing challenges with Townies I always edit them in CAS with full edit mode on 🤣 I keep their race and 90% of the time their name but adjust their fitness, make their eyes bigger with lashes and make their features more proportionate
I recreated all Of my townies.....cause there were looking like a cat without no fur
donelia white recently all my recreated townies have randomly changed into the UGLIEST clothes. Even the sims I play with are changing outfits after showering in WEIRD ways. For example, I deleted the Pancakes, downloaded the updated family with Iggy, changed their clothes in CAS, moved them in and then after showering they change into the outfits of the original Pancake family. Then if I play another family they rock up in completely random clothes, I’m talking long socks, sunnies, shorts, knitted jacket, sandals, earrings, cap etc.

been playing the sims for almost 2 years...just realized you can plant on the grass. Thought you needed those square pots and circle pots.
Haha I just discovered that the square and circle pots existed like 2 days ago and until then always planted on the grass, exact opposite 😂
I ONLY discovered this thanks to the magic realm expansion! I had a bunch of pots and was using the magic to garden and accidentally clicked off the side and bam a dragon fruit plant on the grass!

Just a tip as well that I found useful, if you decide to do the detective career in the ‘Get to Work’ expansion, unlock the ‘Observant’ trait using your satisfaction points. It lets you see all the traits a sim has when you first introduce yourself making it a HELL of a lot easier to find the criminals and arrest them. It can be so annoying when the game doesn’t let you keep ‘getting to know’ the sim so I would highly recommend it to help you solve cases a lot faster
Yes! I really struggled with the detective career until I figured this out.
That's actually how I always spend my sim's first 500 points, and I don't even have Get to Work. It's so useful.

Toddler care advice:
Try using high chair to restore toddler's energy need. It's more effective than a bed or tent. Toddlers also eat faster in a high chair.
After the toddler finishes the meal just press 'Nap' interaction several times and you'll see how fast energy need will replenish :)

I stopped using the high chair because my Sims take too long to take the toddlers out of it so they start crying and that's just sad :( I just drag plates of food to their room, honestly.
@@RosheenQuynh yeah, that's a big disadvantage. Also interactions like "stuck in here!" and "let me out" are hard to cancel ,sim just keeps trying to let toddler out and often ignores the cancellation which is weird.

I never let my sims eat the fruitcake since I got a bug once where my sim ate it, was disgusted, and then made the disgusted face at every meal he ate afterwards. Don't know if it's been fixed since then but I'm not risking it! It's a bit of a bummer when you go to the trouble of crafting an excellent meal and he acts like he's eating cat food.
So that is why I couldn’t find the mood that my Sim should be to get a promotion in their job, they got rid of it

I've been still doing the moodlet that websites recommend because I thought it just moved to the backend (insider tip). The fact that moods do nothing is news to me!

One of my favourite things to do with the handiness skill, that took me a while to figure out is even possible, is buy a cheaper bed and upgrade it fully. It dramatically decreases the amount of time your sims need to sleep and they wake up with some positive moodlets. You can even upgrade the bunk beds.

Once a sim makes a meal, they tend to head to watch tv out of habit. So i take advantage and make them watch the cooking channel. So easy to get cooking up!
This was amazing. I bought the sims for my daughter. I wanted to learn how to play the game so I could teach her....needles to say I play it more then she does and we have almost every pack hehe.
This guide is probably the best one I've seen for new/semi new players. I learned alot from it personally. Great work and thank you.
I get that you want to teach her and the idea behind it is really sweet. Now I do think it might be better for her to figure it out herself. She will find her way and this way she can feel more proud and independent of herself which I think is very important in personal development.
I LOVE lot traits, I hope we had more. I always add three to lots I built or renovate: two "positive" and one "negative" it help to balance things and adds some fun :)
I had cursed in my handiness video. I needed a fire for this one and fired that fresh save up, got a fire on the 2nd try. It definitely can add some variety with the negative ones.

My favorite career combo is the stay-at-home flower arranging. Paired with gardening you can get rich pretty darn quick!
I'm pretty new to the sims, but:
If you have a sim with the fishing aspiration, they will end up with tons of fish. Level them up in cooking until they can make a poke bowl, then you can make them for free with their fish. Extra bonus is that they get a focused buff!

A word on fruitcake lol my sims for whatever reason get sick on everyone's fruit cake with the exception of Bob Pancakes fruit cake...Not sure why this is. lolol

Great video again Carl , I do not play with mods or cheats but i have found several short cuts that are very usefull, my favoraite 2 are, '1' - If you need to make friends for any aspiration level.. take a photo of or with somone and within 4 trys you will be good friends :) '2' - Do as many of your sims wishes as fast as possible and save those reward points up till you have 3000 buy the 'Connections' reward , it will start all careers at level 4 - sit at the computer and go down the list joining and leaving all the careers but the one you want 'save that till last to join :) ' you will be rolling in cash as you get a chash payout on leaving each career, plus! when all done go into your family Inventory for all the unlocked goodies WIN! :D BTW it only takes a copule of days to get the 3000 reward points to spend especialy if you open the calendar and create a couple of holidays and completing the holiday tasks gives a nice points payout too :)

To make friends fast (almost to a level of cheating) is to go to your phone and click “take picture with...” and your meter will essentially go up till friends. I think I saw this in one of your comments and I’ve been using it ever since bc spamming interaction can be so tedious
Somehow, I literally just figured this out: you can store harvestable in the fridge. So if there is an ingredients list, it will count to have the harvestables in your inventory OR stored. You can put fish in there too.

You can also get Snaggle Fluster and other special drinks like Space Energy Juice if you have Dine Out as you can add them to custom menus

Conveniently my sim is stuck at lvl 9 in the job because career progress is going super slow 🤣🙄
I think I got it after a few tries. I just saved where I was about an hour from work and reloaded until I had it. It's cheesy but so is its level 9 requirement.
The Sims 4 be like: Level up in [insert skill here] skill- Worth 100 Aspiration Points.
Get ENGAGED to [insert sim here]- worth only 75 Aspiration Points???
The Sims 4 has a lot of flaws to long time fans, but I get the feeling the developers made whims turned off by default because they knew they never properly optimized them. Remember when our sims’ wishes (Not whims) actually had impact and granted exciting rewards?
I wonder if it makes sense for EA's bottom line though: a point system which rewards materialism equals more money spent on package stuff. Getting engaged, that's not linked to any in game object. To be fair, the one aspect that's improved a lot in the Sims 4 is interpersonal relationships though. It always gelt very random even in the Sims 3 but no longer.
PS: There's a cheat for Sims' whims, which works like $motherlode does for simoleons, but then the player has very little left to do imho : )
This is one of the reasons why we won't ever have cars. Cars MUST be a base game feature, its "too much work" and they won't get paid for that work so they dont touch them. Same thing with whims, they're broken but if you dont use and dont know their existence you won't notice it and it plays in their favor.
@@whokwnos7648 But... we already had cars in Sims 2 if I remember correctly. It did nothing more though than having a way to go to work, when you missed your ride.
Every house I have is maxed with eight sims. That tip about clicking needs buttons to automatically find a fix is going to change my life.

If your game is too laggy, live underground. I had a sim live in a small house that went down multiple sub-levels and I couldn't believe how smooth things ran when the background didn't need to be rendered. I also like putting my rocket ships two levels underground with tall walls, then it can seemingly come up from a bunker.

Thank you! This was great, and a lifesaver. I'm a veteran Sims 1&2 player, and just FINALLY got a computer that could handle SIMS4, and MAN amI overwhelmed - in a good way. Just started playing today. So many changes! Corners! Pre-made rooms! Whoa. I'm stoked!
But I keep finding things left and right that I don't know how to fix or undo, like making a deck against the house removes the walls the deck is up against. Searching for videos that explain some of these quirks, but I'm Deaf and most videos don't have caption options, so a great big bonus thank you for having captions on your videos!

The first time I realized my sim was getting fat, she was a game streamer that lived in one of the apartments.
She would eat and stream constantly, I got the potion to where she didn’t need sleep so it was money aaaallllllday.. I noticed one day she went to scoop the kitties poops and I noticed she was a big rounder. Realizing yep she gained weight so I made her exercise and got her back to her normal fit self ^-^
I thought this was super immersive 🖤
i noticed it when i was doing a mob boss life and he got triplets and after he had gotten all the way up in career and i moved them to a mansion i was like- now hold on a second he was a beef cake
I think these are all pretty useful! Plus they'll be a nice refresher after taking a break from the game.
As a side note: I recently re-bought sims 3 on steam with the expansions I never got to have in high school. I keep revisiting your sims 3 guides to help me out and it's very nostalgic!
I just started playing Sims 4 about 10 days ago and this was one of the first videos I watched. It was even better to go back and re-watch it after I've spent some significant time in the game. I've watched a lot of your videos but this one is definitely 5 stars for new players.
This was good stuff. I've been a Sims fan since the original game, though the last one I really played was Sims 3. I've been getting ready to start playing Sims 4 and this video had a LOT of niche information that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere else. One tip that I am familiar with though, and highly recommend ALL players listen to from this video.. HOT KEYS. Learn the HOT KEYS. It will make your gameplay a lot more efficient and fun.

Great guide overview. I found it helpful and I learned a few things I didn't know we could do.
I know this is old, but! 14:30 there's an other way to "back up" your game incase something happened to your computer. You just upload your house and sim/family to the online gallery. When you upload sims it saves all the skill level and achievement progression in the game! So essentially you can pick up from where you left off just by uploading your sims and their homes to the gallery

Very good video. lots of good tips for improving moods or placing mood lifts. One thing I think you forgot to mention is the Painting skill, as it is a very good Simoleons maker provided the amount of time and effort. Also when your sims are in an angry, flirty, or confident mood you can set the sim(s) to paint the matching mood. By placing these paintings in a room or an area you can place an aura on it to emit to give the surroundings the buff related to the nature of the painting. Don't spend asperation points on that love potion. Create a flirty painting or two and set the aura when you want for the low cost of 100 Simoleons and reusable indefinitely.

Harvestables are great for toddlers. I just fill their inventory and they can eat immediately whenever is convenient.

Good morning Carl. While playing I found a random Gnome... bug? That gives you free seed packs. There is no cheat to use this but you need Seasons for the holidays. During a holiday with gnomes go and please a gnome so they get a halo. Then go into Build/buy and put that gnome in your household inventory, wait until the holiday is over and the other gnomes are gone. Now go back and get that household gnome with the halo and put it out on your lawn with open space. Every day now the gnome will drop a few seed packets. If left down they start to make a spiral pattern. I just pick them up and use them as I need them (free produce, flowers or just sell the packets as is). I am not sure if you can have more then 1 of these gnomes on you property but I know ever family can have thier own. The gnomes are also perminant, they do not leave the next holiday and you can move with them.
i do not think it is a bug, it seems as if it was implemented on purpose lol
i got 3 gnomes from the harvestfest event in which pleasing the gnomes is one of the activities
Also, if you have appeased your Gnomes on harvestfest, while they have the little halo, and you leave your lot during the holiday and come back, the gnomes (all 3 of mine) will continue to produce seed packets until you sell the gnome.

I do have to point out one thing in this is with a DLC and that is clubs it can be very op My Sims club cleans the house and make paintings for him to sell at his store

I’ve learned that one of the best ways to bring down a negative mood like tense or sad petting dogs or cats bring it down faster also when your teen is in a bad mood have them right in the journal I think it comes with Parenthood and that helps them get rid of the mood swing faster.
The cowplant emotional juices last 8 to 12 sim hours and have overpowered most othet moodlets (except tense due to needs)

There's a general pattern you touched on but didn't explicitly state: some crafting skills have a type of item for some of the emotions, which you can only make while in that emotion and can then use to cause that emotion again later.
For example with painting you can make a sad painting while sad, angry painting while angry, flirty painting while flirty, ect. For all the emotions except inspired (which just boosts painting skill) and tense (can't paint while tesne). Viewing these paintings, or having them around with the motional aura on, will give a moodlet for that emotion. Mathematical Diagrams are just the name of the focused paining.
For cooking there are silly gummy bear pancakes for playful, a "flaming spaghetti" I forget the exact name of for angry, high protein plate for energised. I think there's something for flirty too but I don't remember seeing anything for sad, angry tense, or confident.
I haven't explored flower arranging and mixology enough to know about those.
You could craft emotional drinks. When you get LV 10 at mixology you unlock the possibility of crafting the emotional potions you could buy in reward store
