In this video, I explain my process for painting this cat's eyes and fur with pastels pencils and sticks. The whole painting took about four hours to create.
I used Caran d'Ache pencils and Rembrandt pastels sticks. Over 20 colours were used in the creation of this piece, so I'm not going to list them, but my process is simple. I lay a base down with pastel sticks, and then layer in my details using pencils. I usually work for dark to light. For my final whites, I often use my Rembrandt sticks since they layer nicely. I often used broken pieces.

Carole finally, I have been waiting to see you create your outstanding work. I believe your website is done very well. Everything seems to be in order. There doesn't seem to be any confusion or delays as in some sites that I have seen. I wish you luck in your endeavors and thank you for sharing your talent with all of us. Your inspirations leads me into trying new avenues with my art for I am new in the art world, just beginning. I did not even realize that I had anything to offer until various people were encouraging me to continue for they liked my work. Imagin that. I have a long way to go to come close to your level of work but I really enjoy what I do. In this crazy , insecure world, Art brings me peace of mind. Once again thank you dear Carole

I'm very happy you enjoyed the video as well as my website. I really love the FASO websites since they're designed by a former art gallery curator who understands artists' needs. I plan on regularly making videos now that I'm turning away work I don't want to do. I hope my videos keep improving as time goes by and I learn more about video making, as well as get better equipment. ;-) Thank you so much for your kind words Cheryl! :-D

And Cheryl, keep at it with your art. It only gets better as you learn more, and we never stop learning. Have fun!

Carole. I really enjoyed watching you create. I do watercolor pet portraits and would like to try pastel pencils. Could you tell me what brand you use or a good quality set for me to start with. Also if there is any other equipment or hints you could pass on. Thanks you

Fran Taylor thank you! In this I used Caran d'Ache pastel pencils and Rembrandt sticks. They're professional quality. To start off, I think Carbothello Stabilo pencils are great and reasonably priced. For sticks, you can't go wrong with Faber Castel for a good starter set. I also suggest Uart sanded paper and/or velour paper. If you go to by website, I have a blog article on my favourite pastels and papers with links to where they can be purchased. Just so you know, I am an Amazon affiliate so I do get a small fee from purchases. Hope this helps!
