Great advice Carole thank you, more importantly what a beautiful rendition of the cocker spaniel.. I love how you did the green on the ears for the background, rather than the individual hairs...neat trick.
Lee ludlow Art well you are doing amazingly well for someone who’s just started! Wow! I know ppl who’ve painted their whole lives who aren’t as talented as you. 👩🏻🎨
Carole Rodrigue thank you so much. Compliments like this from an artist as talented as you mean the world to me. I just set my standards very high which means most of the time I’m very disapointed lol. Your work is beautiful
Carole Your work is stunning. I just wondered how you choose which medium to produce your animal portraits as I see you work in oils also. Do you feel Animals are better in pastel than coloured pencil. I am struggling with a tabby cat at the moment which I have used a watercolour albrecht durer pencil as an underbase and polychromos on top but finding it difficult to get the softness.
Thank you so kindly for that! As for which medium, I let my clients choose. I enjoy both equally and both are equally good. For my clients I think it’s a matter of preference and price. I charge less for pastels since I can complete them much more quickly than an oil painting which requires drying time between the many layers, as well as paint mixing.
Your work is beautiful! I’ve been a a people portrait artist for a long time but I’ve been wanting to get into pet portraits lately so thank you for the advice! I also wanted to ask what pencils you are using? Thanks!
My pleasure, and thank you! I’ve just finished a people portrait. 😉 As for my pencils, I mostly use Caran d’Ache, Carbothello Stabilo, and Conte a Paris.
Thank you! I don’t spray my pastels because they really hold well on pastelmat and sanded paper, so it’s not necessary. Spraying darkens the pigment too.
Freehand on paper and graphite paper to transfer. When I’m doing oils, I scribble charcoal behind the sketch paper and then trace my sketch. The charcoal shows up more.
Glad you like it! I like 25%, but if it’s a lower amount then $75 to cover materials. If for any reason the commission was cancelled before I started, I refunded the deposit. If the work was started, no refund. Just make sure this is clearly stated in the terms and conditions before you start any work.
Hiya, amazing video - very helpful 👌🏼 I was wondering what kind of pastel pencils you are using for your work? The pigment looks incredible.. thanks :)))
I now start at 8 x 10, but I have done 5 x 7 inches in the past. I stopped because working smaller can be tougher, especially if you have a poor quality reference.
I know this was 1 year ago but I would love to be a artist sounds silly my dream is to be able to draw my horse but like your drawing so it’s looks the same have u got and tips to help me I’m a starter do I’m not good at drawing
If you’re just starting out and don’t feel you draw well, I recommend using a grid. You can download art grid apps. This would make it a lot easier for you. Best of luck!

Mistakes are by far the best way to learn. I’d never drew or painted anything 2 years ago and I’m picking it up lovely now.

whoa nice work Carole , do you put a coating or spray something over your pastel work or just leave it like that , cheers
Thank you! I don’t spray my pastels because they really hold well on pastelmat and sanded paper, so it’s not necessary. Spraying darkens the pigment too.
How do you get your sketch on the paper? Do you use a tracing method or freehand? Also, this is amazing.

Absolutely! There are many digital artists selling their work now.

Glad you found it helpful! I use mostly Caran d’Ache pencils and some Carbothello Stabilo. I also use Rembrandt soft pastel sticks.
What should be a minimum size for doing a pet portrait? Thank you so much
