  • A world without money is an extreme idea. Or is it? Jade challenges the notion of 'trading our time for money' and goes on exploring what it would take to transition to a moneyless world. Jade Saab is a Lebanese/Canadian writer and political theorist based in Toronto. His writings cover topics of Liberalism, governance, and Marxism with occasional forays into current affairs. An editor at Reformermag.com, he is currently writing his first book - Finding Left. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

hence why the reliability of money must wither away in time with full automation. When most jobs are taken by machines people will start to seek what they want to do, instead of what they have to do. The free market will not be abolished, machines will not produce what is decided by a governing body, but by the people, thereby simulating a free market (without currency) where the people decide what is being produced, and decide what is being consumed.

Money is just a proxy for resources. I think asking humans to not compete for resources would bear as much success as asking fish or elk to not compete for resources, or mating rights, or territory.
We will always compete for these things, hence have money, because this is earth and we’re from here.
I don’t believe a single sub species of primate is capable of overcoming mother natures design, she is unconquerable.
The systems they are tackling live on top of other systems, biological ones.
No problem can be solved unless you tackle its root cause.
A moneyless society would only work with unlimited resources evenly distributed to every human being.
That would require law of physics defying technology. Supernatural even.
But let’s say we did it.
I have a machine that make or produce anything.
      That would destroy us.
I think it would destroy any species, but especially us in short order. People would do nothing, it would stagnate our species.

The history of Native American and currency is a fascinating one. Many American Indians had quite sophisticated forms of trade and currency, whereas other tribes, such as the Inca in Peru, managed to develop a complex and advanced civilization without money. It wasn’t until the Europeans came and dismantled this way of living.

Money is a primitive way for society to function. That being said, I do believe it was a necessary part of the evolution in the advancements of industrial, and technological achievements for humanity. Companies have pushed the boundaries in science, and technology to get to a point where we can now explore other planets. Traversing throughout the universe, and colonizing other worlds is when our belief system will evolve into a different way of thinking.

SO5 TANI The rich want to control the flow of power, money is a way to do that. It would be impossible for an average person to obtain the wealth, and power of the people who really run this world. We are all ponds in their game, and as long as they have a way to manipulate the masses with money 💰, gold, and any other commodity, the rich will always rule. It would take a massive war to disrupt this system, but will send humanity backwards to go forwards if that make sense.

    • @vixxcelacea2778
      @vixxcelacea2778 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Oh definitely. When you literally don't have enough to go around, you have to make tough decisions. We weren't global enough and we didn't have enough production. In order to place some kind of agreed value, money was needed as a means of exchange and originally it was probably based on contribution from your job. Though it always seemed arbitrary. Everyone needs food, so "humble farmer" probably should of been one of the more glorified jobs since it pertained to survival of a tribe/nation etc.
I actually don't think we'll bother with space travel unless we find a sustainable means to do it. I think instead we'll turn inward and go for actually advanced VR. Why have humans take up so much space if they can live, feel and be in a world of their design? In a house in which they can change the color whenever because the physics laws are different?
Space seems vast, empty and not worth it. I think changing to a resource access system of economy (similar to Venus project, but I vouch for people still working and contributing until we have sophisticated enough AI to do menial tasks)
My idea would be, you work however many hours needed for a specific sector of production (food, medicine, technology, luxury, entertainment, infrastructure etc etc) you get access. Everyone contributes to a different part, they get access to all the parts. Basically communal, but with a lot more structure and a heck ton of more people working in their sector. Given the sheer amount of able bodies too, you'd also probably not need to even work very long. And no one would own/control the sectors. The plethora of people and the short hours probably would lead to less need of intense oversight. Because the job will not be as in depth. IE say you work in food sector. Which sector of that food sector? Lets say growing. So your job will likely be just plant x amount of seeds in soil. Someone else comes in on the next shift to water and tend for an hour or two and it keeps going until harvesting comes up in which you're welcome to do to if you like, or a different set of people come to do. Your part is intentionally small, both because of the small amount of time needed, but also so that there is less managerial oversight needed.
You go home after an hour and then do whatever hobbies you like, spend time with friends, get a health check up, any myriad of things taken because of time spent at work.
More people working means less time spent there for everyone. Much like animal farm, minus any overhead to dominate the sector. There is no head of sector. There are hundreds of experts in each one who help decide and train people on how to best do the job they are able to do.
This also has a bit of mutual destruction. Say the food sector for some reason calls a strike. You'd have to get thousands and thousands and all food production areas to agree to do so. In which time, food doesn't get made which hurts everyone. You hurt everyone including yourself. I think that's the key to prevent this "me and my own" thinking of production. It also would encourage pride in work because your contribution while small intentionally makes a difference. If you plant the seed wrong or do a shoddy job then you are affected too, because that's your food as well as the worlds that you are helping plant.
You might still get some people who are "lazy" but there are so many people who would gladly work a few hours a day or less even to make sure food production happens for everyone including themselves and their social circle.
People want to feel useful to their tribe. So make the tribe the world and the self, have people in a structure where they are valued because they contribute. Then everyone can go home and contribute more through hobbies, self-expression, discussions and whatever else they actually want to do.
Plenty of people will work because it feels nice to do so. If anything, there might be a problem of not everyone having to work at which point people will find other ways to contribute.

Imagine a world where basic health care, shelter is provided to everyone, where money isnt the term used to judge the quality of an act. Where people will solely follow they passion, to give back to the society. The unity which will be created amongst, the power each and every person will hold. Not 0 but it would be reduced dramatically. There are people capable of inventing incredible things by themselves. But in most cases inventions are the result of the cooperation of a large group of people. It's usually a long and hard process for every part involved. There are many struggles, fights, disagreements along the way until the goal is achieved. Money forces us to get along, it forces us to sacrifice some things to get other things in return. If people didn't any real need that forces them to stick with something, then most people will quit. The end result is isolation.

    • @coolioso808

@@ennen1701 We definitely have the technology today to do most of this and the rapidly advancing technology to get to that 'Star Trek'-like world in 5-10 years from now, IF we all worked towards that goal. Of course, that is the major barrier to overcome - the no-money world mindset. We have all been brought up in a world run by money so very few of us are able to think outside the box of how we could live better and more sustainable without it.
Many Western countries already over produce the basic needs of life: food, shelter, water, etc. There are not any real world practical examples of how this could work today, but there are, as the OP noted some examples in TV/film like Star Trek or The Orville.
I think that a more straight-forward film that is more relatable to current times that shows people living in a no-money society would be beneficial. Also, a major simulation video or interactive game that allows people to really see what could be accomplished if we remove the shackles that our money-based world puts us in.
The last thing I would say is that a transition to a new no-money system would be easy, probably one of the hardest things to do. But, the facts are that we have the technology to do it! You couldn't say that 100+ years ago, but we do have science and technology on our side now - if we finally want to use it for good, rather than dropping bombs on each other.

Could it be that this discipline does not exist mainly because money exists? Our ancestors worked without money, most of us would perhaps not work without money because we have been conditioned to only be willing to work if we receive money in return. Take this conditioning away from the next generation and it could work. I think luxury products, status symbols, greed, theft, hoarding and even marketing/commercials would not exist if there was no money. Greed creates the incentive to increase profits through marketing. Marketing creates artificial demand. Nobody would want 3 smarthphones or a new smartphone every year. We'd just create the most durable and useful phone we could and we'd likely all have the same one. Imho there are lots of things that merely exist exactly because money exists.

What an inspiring talk. I think about this a lot. But have difficulties theorising about how society could get there. The thing is that many countries would have to make the transition at the same time, kind of like uniting their governments, because some countries depend on material that are only extracted in other countries (food, oil, minerals, etc.). This way, if only one country tried to make this transition internally, it would have problems to import materials it do not have, since it could not buy it without money. However, if many countries did an agreement to make this transition, they could exchange materials each other produced. I live in Brazil and we could probably make this transition alone for a start, since we have plenty of food, oil and minerals. However, we do not have much industries to process all of it and make the final products we need, this industries would have to be implemented firstly.
One suggestion I can think of would be to create a UN agency for discussing this matter with scholars from several countries, maybe one day they could get to a point where it could become a reality.

Considering the open source trend and all of the underpaid developers and researchers in different areas which would be supported by this idea. Those guys actually run our whole world based on linux etc. There would be much more of them because they would not have to fear to change the job or something. And this would also accelerate the technology even more (and there is so much going on at the moment!) to produce even more resources. This would lead to a society only with one government which could move all our actions in a useful direction for the humanity itself - climate change, world hunger or destroying of animal habitats. A world without money could be better than the present mess, but how do we get there? What actions will ensure it? I think we need to use what we have in the present system. We have to use the present system itself because it is what we have available to us. There is no moneyless country we can move to. So make your plans based on what you have. That is what I am doing. I have accumulated various assets over the decades and I aim to use them to get more as a group than I can on my own. I think it is possible for a transition group to grow exponentially very quickly if it uses money judiciously. I think it should be possible to double the number of members every year. If it can also double the number or value of assets every year then the sky is the limit. It is assets like land and properties and businesses that count more than money itself. Money acts as an enabler (after taxes). As the group makes money and buys assets, it becomes more attractive (all else being equal). A group with land and labour and income can grow its own food and get the rest of the things it needs from its multiplicity of businesses.

I want to live in a world without money. I also want to live on a ten acre plot of land in a well-built house. In a world without money, how do I go from being landless to being a landowner? How do I attract skilled contractors to build my house, as opposed to less skilled people? I want to live in a world without money but I need concrete examples of how things like this would work in practice.

First of all, thank uu for sharing that thought. Great question. I've got a pretty good idea of how that would work.
Now Daniel, imagine a world in which money was no longer the form of reward...cause that's all money is right? A form of reward?
In my proposed imaginary world, everybody would get everything for free (i mean food, healthcare, shelter, everything). The world would continue to operate just the same as the one we currently live in. The only difference would be that money is no longer the form of reward.
So then, what will be the new reward for doing work? Well, it'll be free access to all that uu currently purchase with money (food, shelter, etc).
I'll use an example which i hope can clarify all of the above.
Let's say I'm a teacher. In such a world/system, I'll offer my services for free. That is, teach kids free of charge. How do I expect to get paid? Well if I'm able to get food for free, then that's my reward. Who then pays the farmer? It'll be the doctor who provides him with free health service. Who pays the doctor, It'll be the contractor who builds his home free of charge. Who pays the contractor? It'll be me who teaches his kids for free.
Are uu seeing the cycle now? Everybody continues doing what they love and in turn, services become free and nobody's left out of the equation unlike the system we currently have.
For this to work, there has to be some prerequisites ofc.
      1. Everybody has to be genuinely 'good'. This system cannot survive if we still have greedy people. It'll only work if everybody's okay with being equal. If everyone can acknowledge that being equal isn't such a bad thing, then the system should work.
      2. Everybody has to participate. I mean uu cant expect to get free services while not contributing to society. If the farmer decides not to work, the whole system crashes bcoz the doctor/contractor won't work either.
      3. The population should be monitored one way or another. We cannot put a strain on natural resources.
That's the basic gist of it. Lemme know what uu think.
In ur case specifically, in my proposed system, uu can only get that 10 acre plot provided everyone else can get it too. The house will be effortlessly built for uu. All uu have to do is provide a free service too. That way, the contractors and everybody involved will also benefit from the cycle of free services.
One last thing, how is this system any different from the one we have? It's different bcoz there's no longer any money involved...along with the countless bad things that happen bcoz of it.

Now is the chance. If we can take down the government in these times where civil war is already a serious threat then we can transform our society. Freedom will have a whole new meaning and our country as a whole will rocket into the future and progress faster than ever before. The innovation from the new found passion that currency has held prisoner for so long will be amazing and beautiful.

AI technology is accelerating and already threatening they way society functions. For example, AI Art is extremely advanced now to the point it jeopardize artists careers. I believe this is just a prelude to what will happen to most jobs.
Blue-collar jobs like grocery worker, cashier, cleaner, etc will be performed by AI and automation very soon. Perhaps even in 10 years considering how fast AI technology is evolving. Millions of people may not have jobs or money to survive anymore. We do need to rethink about how we structure society because we are running into a wall.
Their is already many flaws with how this society with money functions, poisoning our water for profit, violence from poverty, exploiting workers, greed, etc.
I am open to the idea of a moneyless society. I hope we can achieve something of this nature.

Because the world is complex and full of complementary opposites Both and More is a Useful Frame of Reference. Also Transcend and Include. As pertains your TED Talk Jade the appeal to get beyond competitive behaviors is probably very unlikely in the short term and possibly not even desirable? So accepting that some level of competition is built into our current scenario we design for that in mind.

Saving this one for sure. To be honest. It's probably inevitable, even if you compare money based society with moneyless society. We will probably advance and be greatly enriched as popularity of moneyless concepts grow and affect our lives. The hard part is trying something new.
