Not doubting that Gareth Southgate is a good man and nice person, but that doesn't mean he is a good manager, he was very limited. He had a squad full of players who play expansive and progressive, offensive minded football at their clubs and basically had them play like Stoke under Tony Pulis.

He doesn’t have a style of play which eventually caught up to him. Had about 4 different styles each game which the players clearly implemented. The likes of Foden, saka, Kane, they need a system that suits them but Southgate couldn’t provide that. He’s put us on the right track but was certainly the right time to go

I liked G-South. Thought he did well overall and was a decent human. My only major criticism was his inability to make effective changes at the right time at the match, but it feels like very few managers have that skill. I think England will struggle at the 2026 World Cup (with or without Southgate) as they seem to fatigue very quickly and that tournament will be played in a warm climate earlier in the afternoon.

I think Southgate did a good job in bringing back the positivity and hope for England but as a manager overall, i don't think he was that good. Sure he got to two finals at the Euros and the semi finals of the world cup but England had usually gotten teams below their quality and whenever they did face a team on their level, they would usually lose. He also played a very boring style of football that is just out of depth nowadays and it didn't let the team play to their full potential and was probably holding them back more. The players deserve blame too as most of them don't perform as good for their country as they do fir their team but it's also the manager's job to get thr best out of them and i feel he didn't do that. As someone who is Irish, the reason why a lot of us don't want England to win the euros or world cup is not just because we hate the national team, it's also because they've never felt like they've deserved or played well enough to get as far as they did. This was the right decision but they have to get a top quality manager if they wanna be seen as one of the best teams in the world

    • @alexellams5678
      @alexellams5678 หลายเดือนก่อน

Think with the style of play comment, I don’t think he has a clear one. I think he lets the players almost do what they want and in the end you see multiple. Like Kane likes to drop in with someone spinning in behind and he’s done that for the last 4 years. But saka and foden are very systemated and you see them try and play like they do for city and arsenal. That’s where I think it’s gone wrong for him

100% correct take. Done brilliant in 2018 - overperformed in fact and croatia actually had the better players. First final since 66 in 2021 - absolutely no complaints. Did well in 2022 - even outplayed France, can't fault his tactics there. However, this tournament bar Netherlands he has consistently been poor and despite our run it just felt unsustainable - at some point individual brilliance wouldn't be enough. Love him to bits but it's the perfect time for us to depart. Need someone with a bit better tactical nous to get us over the line in big games

Gareth Southgate made me believe England can be competitive. He got the squad of premier league rivalries and egos together, and he is one of the few men in positions of power that I feel comfortable looking to as a role model through his words and actions. Tactically defensive which in this last tournament no longer makes sense with the attacking personnel we have. My GOODNESS though far and away the best England mamager of my lifetime, right time to go but didn't deserve all the utter vitriol handed out whenever we don't blow teams away 5-0 whilst playing like 90s Brazil. I hope we don't end up in the doldrums like 2000 - 2016 (remember the golden generation 😬)

To start with you have to take into consideration that countries like Spain, Argentina, Brazil etc. have as a priority to create technically gifted players at young age and then introduce them into playing team styles. Unfortunately, England and several other countries don't have that and hype up mediocre players. I think the playing style that England has to mimic is the German which means players that know the basics very well and play hard as a team with great chemistry and pasion.

Southgate’s cautious, defensive ethos is completely opposite to how all these players operate for their club teams. Except probably for Pickford who has been on a team fighting relegation for the past 3-4 seasons, hence why he always wants to punt the ball as far away from his goal as possible. So he is playing to his players weaknesses rather than their strengths.

  • @Twiggi
    @Twiggi หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I never found Southgate to be a good manager, not for country or club. For England you always hear from english fans that he got you to finals in Euro twice and world cup to semis but ultimately from what I remember it was always along the same lines: mistakes, played worse but won, easier opponents, etc. I mean look at this tournament, Palmer clutch player, didnt start him once, last minute winner, last minute equalizer (vs Slovakia who did play well, but it should have been so much easier for England with the players they have), meanwhile look at Spain's road to the finals. All of them top teams. Yet England played arguably worse than their opponent in most matches and this has been the case previously too. Last Euros also finals, but the opponets were also easier than Italy's, except for Germany maybe, which England did win, but yet again played worse. And for the world cup 2018 not even 3rd place, again last minute clutch goal, performances mid, very mid, but for the roster that came it was pretty good as you said, which is true. However at the end of the day the perfomances were disappointing, but it was in EURO 2020 for me when it went downhill, with the subs he made in finals especially.

Southgate took England as far as he could, and he’s left the squad in a much better place than it was after Euro 2016.
All we need is that cutting-edge. Someone to come in and get the team scoring goals for fun.
But thank you, Gareth. You may not have won anything, but you came a hell of a lot closer than all the other England managers we’ve had since 1966.

These players on paper are so much better than every other team in the world.
They’ve got Man City, Arsenal, and Man U players throughout the back yet wouldn’t play out from the back if their lives depended on it. On the contrary, they would play their way backwards constantly.

  • @Ronit1220
    @Ronit1220 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

You did spew some facts there, unlike some other English TH-camrs.
But I would point out one thing, I don’t think it was ever about being entertaining.
It was more about how inapt this team looked with the players that are on that pitch.
Playing defensive counter attacking football is alright, if you are good at it and it works.
But it didn’t work, not having shots on target for 90+ minutes is inapt.
Keep playing under performing individuals is inapt.
Not making subs(in most matches) until it’s too late or before you go behind is inapt.
He was tactically outplayed by almost every other coach that he came up against barring a half or two.
A Bellingham wonder goal, a Saka long shot, A Watkins wonder goal, A Palmer long shot, that’s not tactics mate, that’s individual brilliance and luck.
When a shot with less than
.1 xG goes in, that literally means 9/10 times that won’t go in, that’s how luck is defined.

I’m very worried about what the FA are going to do now. The fact they wanted to keep him on means I have very little trust in them getting the next guy right. It’ll probably be Lee Carsley, who is a better coach than Southgate no doubt but would just be another yes man media darling. Eddie Howe would be ideal but getting him out of Newcastle seems unlikely at this point. Potter is a good modern manager but we saw at Chelsea how he copes with a job with huge expectation and pressure. The way he conducted himself in the press was so embarrassing.
For me, the best available manager right now is either Pochettino or Tuchel. Both managers have proved themselves in England, have a proven track record of developing and successfully utilising English players and are big personalities. This is especially true of Tuchel who is a master in cup competitions and really has some kind of special love for English players ever since he went Chelsea. Just look at what he did with James and Chilwell, I think he could really make Trent a machine at international level in a similar way. Not to mention Kane who in terms of goals just had his best ever season under him.

Imagine Southgate taking on another national team and winning... I actually think SG did a great job with England under tough circumstances. Didn't play sexy football but if you look at the direction in the next 5 years you will see a more statistical approach to winning games. He made England hard to beat. He gave it a great shot and puts it into perspective knowing he's won the most knockout games as England manager.
Whoever comes in is in a tough situation and unless it's Pep or Klopp (which I think is unlikely) there will be questions surrounding the appointment. I can see us struggling in the next 2/3 tournaments unless the FA play a blinder.

Southgate got results, but it was always by trying to win 1-0 by locking down and depending on a Kane or a Belkinghamnor a Saka (or in Sunday's case Cole Palmer) to have a moment of individual brilliance.
But England's strength is in all of their creative, fluid attacking and midfield talent. This is a team that's built to win shootouts, not stalemates.

This a man who got relegated with a fairly decent Middlesbrough side which tells you everything about his skills (or lack of), the only person I've seen nail his time with England perfectly is Mark Goldbridge Idk what it is about the rest of youtube and football media that makes everyone think he is the second coming of Jesus. For me, the only person we are likely to get who i want is Howe. Keep up the good work Spencer and let's hope for a bit more success in the future.

13:16 debatable. Bellingham got a crucial goal in the group stages and saved England against slovakia again not to mention with an acrobatic goal. I’d say Bellingham was just about as good as Palmer given that Palmer assisted the Watkins goal and scored a goal as well.

I think Southgate was gonna leave anyways after Euros, thats why this time he decided this euros squad but due to his limited coaching experience before england job it was hard for him to tailor the tactics according to the personals he chose. The england looked really lost the way, the way they attacked looked like it would have worked if there was some other players instead of one playing (ehem...... Harry...Watkins). But well i really think with some club stints when he gets enough experience to adapt to players he can become a really good manager and maybe come back stronger. And i mean he is bad but he also has a lot of potential to improve.

The only current English manager that can be anywhere near the job is Eddie Howe. I believe he more tactically adept than Southgate. He’s gone a good job at Newcastle to this point but I think the main thing is we need the culture that Gareth created to continue we can’t go back to what it was like under Roy, Sven or the Wally with a Brolly!

Englishman - has to be Howe. Simply has to be. If it cant be Howe, you have to be open to other managers. I fancied Potter before, but he showed at Chelsea he doesn’t have the winning mentality England need right now.
If you’re open to other managers - Klopp, Poch, Wenger, Tuchel would all be suitable appointments.all tactically sound, play modern football and have respective success in knockout tournaments.
I would have actually included Jose in this list too, despite the football, because I have no doubt we win with Jose in charge. He’s in a job now though so I’m guessing that’s out of the question.

The fact that everytime he would sub in different players and the team was much better but he kept trying the same thing over and over is madness. I get that he has to manage egos and stuff, but you are the manager. It's your responsability to put the best team possible on the pitch. Basically England started every game at the 70th minute mark down a goal. Sure you can win the Euro but you can your job so much harder.

It's a shame that Southgate didn't work out, but he has massively dropped a bollock.
    1) Ignoring Gordon pretty much all tournament when the left wing was crying out for him
    2) Saying that we miss Kalvin Philips in the middle, REALLY??
    3) playing Kane when he was clearly not fit at all, we were handicapped as a result
    4) the Trent Experiment (sounds like a film!)
    5) playing Foden out on the left when everyone and their mum was saying he should be playing in the 10 position
    6) being reactive instead of proactive
    7) leaving it too late to make subs
    8) not making enough subs
    9) negative tactics, the amount of times the players passed sideways or backwards
    and there's even more!

It doesn't matter who it is in terms of prestige as Spain's manager has proven. It's about having someone who knows how to get the best out of a group of players at his disposal, in terms of first team selection, positioning, formation, style and squad selection. This is how Gareth failed. Not having a fully fit naturally left back was crucial in terms of our initial performances, which affected fan morale, which affected player morale. Not having a natural left winger playing left wing, etc.

I agree with what you said but the main problem is the culture of football and the fundamental idea of how football should be played in this country. You go to Spain you will see kids playing football like in England but with huge differences. Over there its all about touch pass move, here its how fast can you run down the line and shoot. That is in simple terms why you see paterns of play in the Spain national team and you see no team cohesion whatsover in the England team.

It's the Ange Postecoglou vs Mourinho football styles England must decide between. Go all out playing horrible football in order to give yourself a chance to win a trophy and waste the plethora of attacking talent available, or maximize that talent and play front foot, risky football in order to entertain and hopefully dominate. Only one team wins a trophy and if you play like Southgate has you have to win it, there's nothing else to fall back on. Playing entertaining football will at least give you something to enjoy even if you don't go and win it. With the options England have in attack and in possession, they have to go for a forward thinking progressive manager next. It is also much easier to get buy in from big players when the game plan is to play attractive football. Most players don't grow up playing defensive, scared football.

Yes Southgate got us to 2 Euros finals but he’s been lucky to get to one of them Southgate is just not got the Tactical experience and ability to win things he picks the same 11 players each game without any though of fitness and style of football that needs to be played against different teams and he lacks the ability to know when to make subs and who to bring on at times he’s not been a good coach but he’s been a good person to bring people together and create a place to want to play we now need a manager that can come in and continue that feeling of wanting to play but also have the tactical ability to take this squad to the top of their game and for me Southgate was never that man and I think this tournament showed how bad of a coach he is

Gareth took England from a place of despair to a nation that is fully competitive and serious at tournaments. He galvanised the fan base to care about the national team again. For that, he should always be respected and is without question our best manager since Alf Ramsay. However, he clearly reached his limit. His decision to resign is the right one. Now we need to go and get a proven winner in charge to maximise this squad's performance levels. No more projects, yes men or easy options. Gareth has paved the way for somebody to come in and get the job done. Somebody like a Jurgen Klopp for instance

I wouldn't say Pickford has come out with a higher value than what he went in with, he's shown again that he's very consistent on the international stage at shot stopping but his distribution across the tournament was very poor and against Spain it was terrible, constant long ball distribution even after it was clear we were giving up possession every time because of it. Our defenders would be slated for that old school English schoolboy way of playing. If we did get Pep he would drop Pickford immediately like he did Joe Hart at City purely because of his feet.
