Hey guys, you know I'm the last person to dwell on the negative but as someone who has publicly been such a staunch supporter of the Southgate era, I felt the need to get this off my chest. Also when I was remembering past tournament appearances, I apparently forgot the damp squib that was World Cup in 2014 and the abject failure to qualify for Euro 2008. But this is the most fear I've ever seen us play with. We aren't talking about top tier teams here, we are showing relative minnows far too much respect in my humble opinion! Hope the Foden family are all ok, there's a lot of things in life that are more important than football. Love to you all.

Joe Gomez has been playing left back for most of the season at Liverpool and has been brilliant. He's in the squad on the back of those performances. Why not play him over Trippier, who has been very very poor? I'm not opposed to Kane dropping deep if he has inside forwards (or wingers that cut inside) along side him. Gordon and Palmer would work wonders with that. As would Saka, and Eze tbf.

    • @luisramirez2548
      @luisramirez2548 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

It doesn't make sense to have Gomez at LB either. For Liverpool, he was playing at LB but played mostly as a wide CB. He rarely moved up the pitch with the ball. So if you replace Trippier with Gomez, it would be the same. No overlapping runs. Just safe passes back to the midfield or defense.

To all the experts that were telling West Ham fans to be happy with Moyes - they are now feeling the same (albeit with a far more talented squad) sense of indignity with Southgate’s England.
When you’re more talented than your opposition, defence is secondary. Unfortunately, it is Southgate’s primary focus & it’s scraped us through a weak group but if Iceland can find a way through, any team in the knockout will too.

Anyone with an ounce of footballing knowledge can see how poor a manager Southgate is - this was apparent before and during the purple patch England had. His stagnant and stale approach is so hard to watch. If you asked any top-10 EPL team supporter if they'd have Southgate manage their club, the answer would be a stern "no", if he isn't good enough for a solid club outfit, he isn't good enough for an international side. As a Welshman, I hope his tenure with England lasts for generations, because then the echo chamber of British TV - laden with English comms - will be slightly more bearable.

I’m still on team Southgate. Doesn’t mean I’m happy with how things have gone or that I think he’s done everything right, but I am keeping the faith and I refuse to blame him for everything that’s happened (or not happened) particularly in the Denmark game where we made so many individual errors. When players can’t string 3 passes together or clear the ball then you don’t really get the chance to see what the manager’s plan was. Also why aren’t more people talking about how poor Rice has been? Maybe I hold him to account more because he’s usually so reliable but for me he’s been tetchy AF.

I'm typing this before watching the video, purely because I wanted to say what I've been seeing:
-Our front 4 of Kane, Bellingham. Foden and Saka have scored 100+ goals between them in the 23/24 season. On the bench, we've got another 50 goals in Watkins and Palmer. They're barely having a shot while playing for England.
-Pickford, Stones, Guehi and Rice have all screamed at the players in front of them in all three games for not giving options. A big reason our build-up play is slow.
-Because our build up is slow, we give the ball away when we run out of ideas.
-Trippier has been constantly encouraged by teammates to overlap, yet barely crosses the halfway line.
-I saw a stat that Foden has passed to Pickford more times (3), than he has Kane (1). In ALL 3 games.
-Kane seems perpetually unavailable to receive the ball. He drops into midfield needlessly and manages to mark himself out of the game.
-On multiple occasions, we've been in a position to put a cross in, but our players have a gentle jog towards the penalty area, zero urgency at all, meaning we're forced to play backwards when the opposition get back into shape.
It just looks completely half-effort. Great, we've got through, but we were the best of a bad bunch. Our group has a combined total of 7 goals scored, and 5 draws from the 6 games.

Southgate said Trippier was carrying an issue before the Slovenia game. I think he’s actually one of the biggest issues going foward. If you watch him he didn’t actually make any sprints in the last game and if Slovenia broke down the right foden, Bellingham and rice really quickly got back to cover him. I think the issue is actually quite bad but it’s also the main reason Trippier is continually going inside and not overlapping is his fitness. Got to give Saka a go at LWB next game for me

Something I’d love to see England to try is attack in a 3-2-4-1. Think about it especially if southgates doesn’t want to change his way. Trippier can push his way up to a left wing position, it allows Foden to invert as a 10, Bellingham can stay as a 10, Saka holds width on the right. Walker comes at a right center back stones a central centerback and guehi who can play lb plays as a left centerback, Kane upfront who I think should stay up there but if he did drop we now have more runners to make a run in behind and rice and Trent can sit behind. We’d overload the midfield and have a lot of triangles and passing lanes. Defensively we can get back into a 4-2-3-1.

    Hear me out.
Football has changed significantly throughout the past decade. Tactically, a lot of formations that we used to think are "unbreakable" are now being exploited and mostly every opponent you face has a sense of idea of what your tactical vision is. I'd set up England like this and I need everyone to hear me out well.
First, the formation: 3-4-2-1 interchanging throughout the game based on different situations( can be 5-2-3 defensively or 4-3-3 in the buildup and in the attack 3-4-2-1)
    Pickford in net
Stones Guehi and Gomez at the back
    Walker Rice Bellingham Gordon
    Saka Kane Foden
the way to set this up where every player can play in their most played position is that
Stones can push up in midfield if Bellingham is attacking Bringing back Walker to cover with guehi and gomez at the back.
Gordon can play the "support winger" where can be there to cover aswell as attack if needed
Foden and Bellingham both can play through the middle while Saka and Gordon on the wings
Kane is to be that forward if needed to comeback, Saka and Foden can get in behind.
Mainoo to come in when needed defensive support
    Palmer/Watkins/Bowen/Toney are all offensive options
The problem with England is that they are playing too cautiously and although they are through to the knockouts, I agree there needs to be a change. Let me know what you guys think!

England are guilty of playing to the standard of the Oppo.
We’re never exciting but it’s tournament football and defensive structure is the most important thing for a team to have.
Playing any of the big boys will be so tough for us this time around, the lack of fluidity moving forward is killing Southgate’s biggest asset, which has been his defensive stability.
One thing you can’t stand even if you’re happy clapper is not utilising the personnel available.
Saka playing LW makes sense probably because you can then get trippier to roll inside and cut in and hit one. Also saka is a demon 1 on 1 either side of the pitch

I'd wish UEFA & FIFA would change the qualification rules for the knockout rounds: allow only teams who win their group to qualify according to group position. Then put every other team in an aggregate league table, where the top 10 is decided by points scored. Games won will be used as a main tie breaker, which would've put Ukraine and Hungary through instead of Denmark & Slovenia gaming the system. In the context of tournament football, goal difference ends up rewarding more defensive, boring teams.

I think we need more help in central positions for Kane by either pushing Bellingham up the pitch or giving him a strike partner as when we lump it up the pitch he either doesn't win the header and is nowhere near it or he wins it but no one is there to follow up, this would also mean the wingers dropping a little which I feel would allow overlapping fullbacks, especially in the case of kyle walker and would allow us to have a forward press rather than passing it backwards so often. But as you said it may be an underlying issue unknown to the public

I dont understand what people are on about regarding Saka. When he broke in to the first team he mainly played on the left. Mostly LW, but sometimes LB. For the first TWO seasons he did that! I remember, but I have also checked fbref AND Transfermarket sats. And even at the start of 20/21 he played on the left for the first 3 months.. after that he has mainly been used on the right. It only takes a few clicks to get informed. People are either ignorent or just forget so fast.

Walker has not once overlapped or tried to combine with the RW, likewise with Trippier. All attackers are similar profiles and come towards the ball. It is so easy to defend against a static side, need a deep midfielder willing to pass forwards and players who are willing to run in behind or beyond Kane.

Completely agree we have been sub-par so far, and that's putting it lightly. However these tournaments are never straightforward. So many trophy-winning teams play crap to begin with and then turn it on in the knockouts - look at Portugal in 2016 and Greece in 2004. We have an incredibly kind draw and have a real chance of making it to the final. To all the negative England fans I would say don't give up hope just yet.

Partly due to the fans and the media almost demanding that we win this tournament (completely irrationally, I might add) and partly due to Southgate's own playstyles, we are a team that sets out not to lose, rather than trying to win. It's not entertaining, nor is it "The English Way", plus it's utter madness to pick a squad full of some of Europe's (World's?) best attacking players and then tell them not to play the way they are capable.
We don't ever take risks and the players are visibly terrified of making mistakes, so none of them are confident of making runs. We move the ball sideways whenever possible and no one has any options of an out ball, so they hold on to it until they inevitably misplace a pass or get caught in possession. I don't see a way that it can improve, unless someone can find a way to give them the confidence to play the kind of game that we all know they can.
They're great individuals, who have been told not to do what they do best.

So this has been in my watch later since it came out, but I’m only just getting round to actually watching it, 12 hours before England play Spain in the final. I think the problem with a lot of England fans is that they want to be entertained, and they want to win, not realising you can’t have both. They also overrate the squad we have, and, especially fans of the big six, underestimate how hard it is to win tournaments. Southgate isn’t perfect, and I agree with you that we need fresh ideas, even if we win today, but he has done better than any other manager bar Alf Ramsey. It’s not pretty football, but it gets the job done and I’d rather reach the latter stages of tournaments playing like this, than play entertaining football getting knocked out by Slovakia

In Germany, we are absolutely shocked by the poor performance of the England team. The German TV pundits and world champions Christoph Kramer and Per Mertesacker sometimes can't even put into words how badly England played tactically. But it has to be said that hardly anyone here can understand the artificial hype surrounding Bellingham (which was probably only created by his PR agency). Don't get me wrong, he's a really good player, he was in the Bundesliga too. But he was never outstandingly good there. Even at Real Madrid he was invisible in the important games. It was the defence, Kroos, Vini and sometimes Modric and even Joselu who made the difference. The German commentators and pundits even make fun of Bellingham, saying that it's annoying that he's always looking for the camera every other throw-in and always has to put on a show. If you then look at his stats, especially in the last game, they are unbelievably bad. England have good players but no team and I'm curious to see how far they can go but here in Germany you see every team in the playoffs stronger than England... even Georgia.
    Greetings from Germany

I totally understand why you backed him originally. I think his work in the 2018 World Cup was incredible for us as a nation. We probably should have beaten Croatia, but that wasn’t important to me at the time. He made us believe again.
But he should have known that was his time to leave. He is so tactically inept that once he’d changed the mentality of the players the best thing to do was get out, but he’s clung on and in doing so, he has totally undone the good work that he did.
Had he done so, we win the last euros. I’m sure of that. He’s shown he has one way of playing (which isn’t a good way of playing) and he can’t adapt at all.
I totally accept that sacking your manager mid tournament is brash. But, insanity is doing the same things and expecting different results. I knew how we’d approach those group games. I knew we’d struggle. I knew we’d drop deep the moment we scored.
I would bet my life savings we don’t win the euros with Southgate in charge.
I wouldn’t be willing to make that bet if we sacked him and bought in an Arsene Wenger or even a Graham potter.
I wish we’d been sensible and sacked him years ago. But we didn’t. Now I feel that’s our only hand if we want a chance.
The fa will never do that. So I hope to god I’m wrong. But I am so sure we don’t even get to the final despite the draw, and if we do, no chance do we beat the teams on the other side of the draw.

This England team is a joke on paper they are probably the best team next to France yet the coaching is so bad that they can hardly create good chances nonetheless score. The main difference between these two sides is yes they both defend well but England is massively underperforming with the insane world class players they have whereas Greece massively overperformed with many players that don’t even play in big leagues and the ones that were in big leagues did not even start regularly.

Spencer, as a West Ham fan I am taking great pleasure in watching the hypocritical nature of the media lambasting Southgate for his tactics, yet West Ham fans had the same complaints last year about Moyes and were called "delusional" and that we should "be careful what we wish for".
Fans want to be entertained and England will never win anything because everyone (from the media to fans) is so obsessed with playing their so-called "best players", even though it means squeezing them in by hook and by crook and playing them out of position. It is no wonder they do not perform and the team looks so unbalanced and devoid of ideas.
Just play players in their natural position. No more experiments. Play players who are in form. No more half-fit players returning from injury or who are tired. Get the balance of the team right.
Seeing as England have to play Slovakia now and not the Netherlands, perhaps England can afford to "rest" Bellingham (looks tired), Saka (does not look fit) and Foden (who is away for personal reasons and not back til late).
I would try Gordon left wing, Palmer as CAM and Bowen right wing. So far Englands attack has been disjointed, not creating much against so.called "lesser" opposition and general lacking. Putting in Gordon, Palmer and Bowen would mean having 3 players who are direct, who like to run and beat their man (Gordon and Bowen especially who will hug the touchline), who have been in form for their clubs and who will want to put in a shift and impress. They are direct, have pace and can score and more importantly they will be playing IN THEIR BEST POSITIONS. Put Rice and Mainoo behind and freshen things up.
Southgate has to stop being so stubborn and freshen it up.
Things were so bad against Slovenia Italian TV (where I live) said England were like "Snails on holiday" there was so little movement and desire.
