This is one of my all time favourites. Ren was very sick when he made this, having spent years in bed with undiagnosed Lyme Disease. Bibi was his real life girlfriend and she was his ‘crutch’ until she could no longer be. Bibi helped raise the funds to get Ren overseas which led to a correct diagnosis and subsequently the stem cell treatment that allowed him to function again. Metaphorically, Bibi was like a crutch, helping him to his feet. I consider this a masterpiece of musicality and generosity of vulnerability. 🙌💜
He is closest to dying in this song, not drugs. He had as just come back from the ER and shot the video. BTW, that's Ren singing the high pitched chorus, not Bibi. The song is about codependency, not drugs. As someone who has a chronic illness, codependency is a real fear. Out of all his songs, this one is the hardest to watch. He is at his lowest physically and mentally. And knowing that Bibi, his fiance at the time, eventually left him breaks my heart. I've never felt so attached to a musician like I am to Ren. He recently had a huge flare up with his illness and I couldn't watch any of these sad boy Ren (his name for this type of song) because it hurt my soul.
I don't think he was dealing with addiction at this point. But he was having bouts of psychosis as the Lyme disease attacked his brain and neurological systems. . He thought he was too ill and too much of a burden to be loved. And he is sooo thin, since he was very allergic to most foods. The title of his Gofundme was "the boy who cant eat. " he was 24-25 here.
