River Mersey - when the tide (with bore) comes in at Widnes, Feb 2019

  • Filmed from the riverside footpath, accessed from Parsonage Road, close to the Runcorn Railway Bridge (aka Ethelfleda Bridge or Britannia Bridge), and the Silver Jubilee (aka Runcorn Bridge) Bridge. A 10.1m (at Gladstone Dock, Liverpool) was expected, which is a large spring tide. As the tide front came into view, it rose to form a tidal bore. Once the bore had passed, the tide just carried on coming in, getting louder as the flow rate increased rapidly. It took just 20 minutes from the bore passing, for the tide to cover all the intertidal sand flats that were visible from the filming location.
    Only a relative small part of the estuary could be seen from the filming location, but it was impressive to see it fill up with water so rapidly. It’s amazing that the whole processes of filling up the estuary with water, then emptying it, occurs twice daily… and all done with the power of the tide/gravity.
    Date filmed: 22nd February 2019
    Expected high tide at Liverpool Gladstone Dock: 10.1m @ 13:04
    The bore passed the filming location at 11:13
    All times GMT. If you are interested in other bores of North West England, search TH-cam for : tidal bore rob bridges

    Tidal bores are great. There's something very satisfying about watching a river run in reverse gear.

    I've lived in Runcorn nearly all my life and only found out yesterday that the Mersey has a tidal bore, I feel like I've been incredibly unobservant! I'm going to watch the river like a hawk next time I'm at Wigg Island or Pickering's Pasture :) Love the video and like someone else has mentioned I really like that it's just the natural sounds with no music over the top of it.

    Seen this loads of times while waiting on the bridge that crosses the Mersey at Arpley tip,it really is a remarkable sight to see the speed that water comes in at,you’d be hard pushed to to outrun it.

    Lived in Liverpool (Waterloo) from 1948 'til 1977 Now in Nevada USA. Always knew the tide was quite rapid but never appreciated it 'til now. Thank you for that. Would love to see a time lapse.

    If you film at the low level railway bridge off Chester Rd. you will get the bore much bigger as it grows towards Warrington town centre!
    Cheers!

    Whats it like for shore searching/mud larking or is it too muddy?

    • @robbridges5975
      @robbridges5975  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Suzy, I wouldn’t recommend going anywhere near the mud. The shores around Widnes and Runcorn contain many buried hazards which you could cut or trap your feet/legs on. If you got stuck and the tide started coming in you would be in serious trouble.

    • @robbridges5975
      @robbridges5975  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It only happens when conditions are right... a high tide of about 9.5m or more at Liverpool and the river is not swollen... then it will happen twice a day because the tide comes in twice a day.

    Can I offer you a piece of advice? Let the object of your filming do the work, it is interesting enough: you don't make it better by moving and panning and closing up. Just film the shot: do less, film more. Just my 5 cents
