Just Wanted to say Thank you to TheOneJame for having me on the channel, it's always great to spread the love of Card Games around and if you are interested in learning more about Digimon, check out your locals and ask if they have a night for Digimon, most players are happy to bring you into the game even if your just Curious.
I’ve never played digimon but as a game designer, the memory system sounds incredibly well designed. It’s a built in negative feedback loop where the player going first essentially only has a maximum of 10 of this resource, and if the starting player uses that much of it, the following player gets that much more on their turn. That’s really cool actually.
I think the best way to explain how evolution works in the digimon to a Yugioh player is that almost all creatures in this game are zoodiac monsters for other creatures within their color. If I have a level 4 blue creature I can evolve, or “special summon” it, into a level 5 blue creature paying the cost. I can do the same with that blue level 5 into a blue level 6. If I were to “normal summon” aka play the creature from my hand however I would use the play cost instead of the evolution cost, which is usually higher. Of course there are exceptions to the color rule. Some creatures can ignore color and go on top of a creature with a specific name for lore reasons.
Still watching but Mega Digimon Fusion was the worst card to start with (without knowing the rules): • Costs 0 so no context on memory costs • And the effect itself is cheating on memory, so again, no context • Nevermind that no Digimon has been shown yet • White option so you need to know the color requirements and guess that it's hard to have white
I choose to do MDF first just because it's the only Banned card, and i wanted to set the tone for the following cards. all your points are valid, i just don't know if being #5 would have made it easier to evaluate
@@AgitoSwiftly Probably, yes, because you could've explained each rule progressively. Or even something like #3, after cards with normal memory costs had been evaluated, to then introduce the subversion.
Coming from Magic I can see what you mean but at the same time this type of mana-cheating effects ALWAYS find a place once the right creature is there for it to be abused.
great to also see some digimon content on the channel. Digimon is a game that works very different from a lot of other card games, which is why I think it would have benefitted from a slightly longer introduction into the mechanics of the game because I feel like the card evaluations did suffer a bit from ssome lack of contect. For the individual cards: Blinding Ray is an absolutely insane card and the only reason it doesnt see more play is the colour that its in. Yellow is all about manipulating your own security and while there are some decks that use their life offensively most of them actually do the opposite. Most Mono Yellow decks are slow control decks that are able to tutor from their security and decreasing it hinders that gameplan. But whenever an aggro or combo deck appears that contains a splash of yellow this card is a staple because its drawback is irrelevant if you win the game on the turn you use it. Apocalymon is obviously broken but in a digimon context it becomes even more sinister. Milling is incredibly powerful in digimon because you are forced to draw for every digivolution. That means everytime you advance your own gameplan you are also benefitting the mill deck. Apocaly had access to some ridiculous on play effects that it could tollbox from, including becoming immune to card effects, locking you out of digivolving or preventing you from attacking, while milling out 8-10 cards every turn. If you did not have an immedeate answer to the first apocaly you would usually loose 30 cards within 2 turns and even if you did they could always just drop another one the next turn because the deck was that consitstent at finding its pieces. Magnaangemons strengths also go much deeper. If a digimons DP are reduced to 0 it will be destroyed by game mechanics, which makes -DP one of the most powerful forms of removal in the game because there are almost no way to protect yourself from it. Also when a digimon attacks into the security and flips another digimon card those 2 cards battle and if the attacker is lower it will be destroyed, so even if you attack the player the blast evolve can be very dangerous. Its home deck Security Control has also become infamous across the player base because it is allowed to bend the rules of the game like no other. The deck is basicly 50% cards that allow you to increase your security and 50% high power removal spells that activate when checked in security and its only goal is too keep stacking these to clear the board until the opponent looses to deckout. Because option cards activate their security efffects even if you dont have the appropriate colours on the board they can also cherry pick their removal spells from every colour in the game
I like how the punctuation in "[start of effect] *full stop* THEN, [rest of effect]" is important, but the meaning is the complete opposite of what the exact same sentence would mean in YugiOh, where the punctuation and wording is equally important
I don't see myself ever playing either CCG, but YuGi takes the cake for insanely obtuse explanations of the card mechanics. Not being familiar with either game, the Digimon cards at least seem reasonable to understand.
@@fredwin I thought that too before playing it, I started playing because Master Duel was free and I figured why not try it. Most of the carricature critiques that people who don't play the game have do apply, but in some ways the complexity is also what makes the game fun I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Is it busted? I mean yes, but it's kind of fun. And in terms of complexity (and even amount of words on a card) when I look at some modern magic cards the difference is not that much. They're different games, and they have different histories, but there is genuinely a fun game to be found underneath the mess, I don't know to each their own I'd play all of them if I had the time and money
26:33 To further expand on this point, the pizza man(refer to regular alt art) was so good in JP that BT15 was preemptively given a ban/limited hit before it released internationally, due to how the release lineup is currently, (currently waiting for BT16 while EX6 and BT17 are currently available in JP, with EX7 being leaked). Giving international players the rest of Feb. to play with full power Apocaly before getting nerfed, granted this sorta gets offset by BT17, since it’s a set that that is based on the Digimon Movies, in Apocaly’s case it’s the stuff from Tamers’ first movie. 33:21 expanding on how Blast digivolving works, the counter timing does occurs before declaring blockers
43:00 I have the exact same issue with DragonBall Fusion World, except there, it's intentional. Some cards say something like: "Add up to 1 cards from your life to your drop(GY). Then, choose 1 of your opponent's Battle Cards with a cost of 5 or less and return it to it's owner's hand." Others say "Add up to 1 card from your life to your drop: Then, choose...." Agree on this one. I think they should have started with digimon with some main or digivolution effects and an inheritable effect. That way we can familiarize first how the game mechanic works. Maybe start with Veemon or Terriermon first. Then, you can hit them with more complicated effects.

As someone who plays yugioh, mtg, and digimon: digivolution is mutate (but only over and only the secondary textbox unless stated otherwiseby an effect), and dna digivolution is Xyz Summoning.
I respect that Digimon genuinely feels different from other offerings in the TCG space, rather than playing too much like any of the big three. The memory system is an excellent core mechanic with interesting push and pull, and the “mutate stack” being a core mechanic is neat as well. From the few games I played, it was quite a lot to track, but I found enough strategic depth to understand why the community has remained so tenacious. A small example of how memory adds to the dynamic is the concept of “memory hosing”. When you overspend memory, it ends your turn and your opponent starts with the amount of memory you overspend, but if you end at exactly 0 the memory is set to 3. So you can tactically overspend by exactly 1 or 2 memory, starving your opponent out of resources. I hear that most good Tamer cards make this concept irrelevant (they set your memory to 3 regardless) but in unrefined decks or early board states it’s an interesting kind of interaction.
I'll be honest I checked out on every explanation during MDF lmao Reading the other comments feels like it's the equivalent of showing Super Poly to a non-yugioh player

Honestly I feel like these cards were really bad choices. They were all way too obvious if they were good or bad, and I feel like Agito didn't adequately explain several game mechanics or WHY the cards were good. For example, he didn't even mention that the main reason why Apocalymon is limited to 1 is because it lets you mill your opponent for over 20 cards in one turn. I think some trickier cards for him to guess would have been stuff like Giga Death, BanchoStingmon, Tommy, Ukkomon, BT7 Dorugreymon, Shoutmon X4, and JetSilphymon, just to name a few.

I think its worth saying just how broken Apocalymon was. Purple decks at the time were aboe to consistenrly get 3 of the dark masters in trash by turn 2 so at that point youre playing this, tucking a 4th level 6 and milling 8 cards from your opponents 50 card deck(-10 for hand and security plus any drawing they did so theyre sub 30). The cards you could tuck for the end of turn effect just had to be level 6. So players found every level 6 with a strong on play effect and teched those in too. Leading to cards that could protect apocaly or cards that floodgated your opponents for the turn. So if they cant remove it they get another one of those effects AND the ability to mill more cards. The worst part? If you use a kill spell to take out the apocaly, the sources go to the trash too, meaning if they had another in hand they just replay it. Japanese players were consistently expressing notions of quitting because the deck was so toxic. To the point where Bandai had to preemptively limit it to 1 before the set came out in english, leading to a MASSIVE tank in sales numbers for people buying that set over here. In digimon box rates are set at 1 alternate art card and a slot that could either be an alt art or a secret rare. So buying a box of this set meant one of your 2 major hits could be a card thats limited to one. It is by far the biggest mistake Bandai has ever printed.
The truely broken part about apocaly despite all that was that it was end of **your** turn. If it was End of Opp this card would never have been banned. Its the fact that the card is wholely uninteractable and you never have to care if he dies next turn. He has already won you the game and surviving is just a win harder. But otherwise great summarization of the Apocalymon situation
I say this trying my best to not be rude. This person said several things that were outright wrong or very misleading. I dont feel he was a good person to use for this kind of game and I wouldnt invite him back.

But otherwise great summarization of the Apocalymon situation
blinding ray reminds me of Mana crypt. 0 mana get 2 mana but mana crypt has a 50% chance of dealing 15% of of your life
14:21 Wait what card? Can’t tell what you said and it just sounds like “ulti-mate” which obviously doesn’t go anywhere when looking it up
"Cultivate"
@@NovaSaber Okay yeah that makes more sense, ty
And I thought yugioh was the hardest game I think digimon takes the cake
Ive never played digimon and i havent even finished the video yet but im still gonna make fun of you and your assessment of the cards are wrong
agitooooo
I say this trying my best to not be rude. This person said several things that were outright wrong or very misleading. I dont feel he was a good person to use for this kind of game and I wouldnt invite him back.
30÷5=7
I tried to watch all the way through, there was way to much to take in
It’s a lot of information for sure lol
