SPOTLIGHT: “Failure of Generals in Kargil led to soldiers being used as cannon fodder,” ex-Major

  • Spotlight: “Generals ignored vital inputs leading to Kargil intrusions going unchallenged. Besides, they used troops as cannon fodder,” alleges ex-Major Manish Bhatnagar, who was a Company Commander of 5 Para. Dismissed from service for raising concerns, he has sent a legal notice to former Army Chief, Gen. Malik asking him to withdraw his statement to media that “Kargil was an intelligence and surveillance failure”. Bhatnagar produces “sit-reps” of the time reporting of intrusions in Jan-Feb, 1999, to rebut Gen. Malik’s claims.

MAJOR BHATNAGAR IS AN EPITOME OF AND OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN. Having known him and served with him a OG GURKHA soldier TO A PARATROOPER..his conduct has always been of the highest impeccable order . He always stood up to his convictions and kept the interest of the men he commanded always ahead of his. It's SAD what he underwent. And his fightback to clear his name and IZZAT is commendable. We hope to see the truth come out FAIR AND SQUARE.
GOD BLESS AND HAPPY LANDINGS...we have a wonderful PROFESSIONAL ARMY AND A SECULAR FABRIC .THE COUNTRY IS PROUD . GOD BLESS ALL THE BRAVE SOLDIERS VETRANS AND THOSE WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES FOR THE COMING GENERATIONS.

Mr Sandhu saab I congratulate you for this interview. However it seems like there were some gaps left and Mr Bhatnagar was not given enough time to complete his story because of either lack of time and also the interviewee being cut off by you. I would say it would take a 1.5-2 hour interview to completely cover this distinguished ex-Major's story because its now apparent that the army was aware of the intrusion and some generals just sat on the information provided by this Major and many others. Those generals should be court-martialed.

@@pkmkb007 I would suggest you to watch more interviews and research about the event than just jumping on to conclusions on the basis of a court martialed soldier. Story is completely different. Anyways cross firing and infiltration along side borders is normal, keeps happening in Punjab Jammu and Kashmir all the time. And as stated by general Manikshaw once that those terrains can not be claimed in winters as it is freezing cold up there. soldiers come down from that point only while going up around april march that they noticed infiltration and movement of troops. Relax. Look back and feel proud that we had the might to regain control of our territories. Covid killed more people in India than any of the wars put together. At that time it was due to political interference but the Kargil debacle was entirely due the negligence of the army command structure, which ignored repeated warnings of front line officers about the enemy occupying vantage positions more than six months before the commencement of operations.

There is a serious point in what Mr Bhatnagar is making. Intelligence failure is one part of discussion.
What is important is that why the military leadership jumped to a conclusion that only a handful of terrorists were in action. Secondly the did not bother to cross check with field commanders. Thirdly they failed to absorb the pressure put up by outsiders (mainly the negative publicity in the press about failure to prevent it). Generals should not think like common people in spite of public pressures and insults. You are sending innocent troops into war it is not a game of cricket, the price here is precious lives.
Our Generals should do some introspection before commonman questioned them. The press should be very cautious in reporting war matters. Undue pressure is unwarranted.
In Kargil situation our troops should have surrounded all infected mountains for weeks together cut enemy supplies and used only air power. In the meantime, the army could have threatened to cross LoC if pak nor withdrawn

I actually feel, we do not study the mistakes we made in previous wars and carry out corrections like other countries. We make same mistakes over and over again. I think its an Indian thing. We forget our mistakes too quickly and make them over and over again.

    Sir,
    1) why Anti-Aircraft guns like L 70 & Zu 23 were not used during kargil ?
    2) How can indian army Or BSF or indian defence forces withdraw from entire kargil - leh Ladakh during winter almost 270 -350 km & enemy Pakistan capured almost 170 km ?
    3) Despite Siachen 1984.
Don't you think greatest blunder from Indian defence forces to withdraw troops during winter ?
If our jawans can perform their duty in Siachen in 1999 why can they perform their duty in kargil in winter 1999 ?

A similar situation is there in Naval History regarding the sinking of INS Khukri the sister ship INS Kirpan which was aling side ran away, though it claimed that it did anti submarine rourine which is not orn out by details of the engine room records of INS Kirpan.
I learnt this by chance through a survivor of INS Khukri....whk was fighting a lone battle to make public the records of the investigation committee.

Very surprising discussion with Maj. Bhatnagar. He should approach not only to the Supreme Court but also to the PMO, this country needs to know the truth.
Secondly, he should also explain his side of story to all print and electronic media so that all countryman pressures the government to conduct high level impartial enquiry again.

This means that there was not any intelligence report till the pakistani army personel reached the upper heights and constructed the bunker.

And our brave fought with “bori of puri” … that line tells you all about our defense set up.
    - We are blessed to have the young and committed, like the officers here. They made the sacrifices: death, injuries, broken families - and - got bullied into court martial!
    - Not much can be said about the leaders - the Generals** - the privileged.
    - They went into comfortable retirement - unscathed.
** for the longest time, the Generals blamed the PM for frontal assaults. According to Generals Kishan Pal and VP Malik, the PM did not allow the armed forces to cross the LOC and go around the enemy.
    - This resulted in high death counts. Perhaps so. But as facts have dripped out, it is the Generals who opted for frontal assaults mostly.
Cannons they could not provide, fodder they did.
    - Buckets of blood was shed. The snow and the ground are still red.
    - justice, truth, and accountability still scream in the cold mountains.
“Bori of puri” -- this line moved me to tears as much as made my blood boil.

Full support to Mr Bhatnagar. Sorry, I could not notice his rank but was noticing his narration. Before this I heard the narration of Mr. Devendra, again sorry for not noticing his rank. Actually, I do not believe rank is more important than the ideas of tactical movement and brave actions taken by a soldier of whatever rank. Rather, I think at times the martyrdom of a brave soldier is stolen by an officer in his favour.

Whether Intelligence or Surveillance failure, the fact is, that Indian army was caught unaware of the intrusions by Pakistan military, who had entrenched itself on the strategic and pivotal points, within the Indian territory. Somewhere, someone had overlooked, which lead to such a situation. The valor of our soldiers can't be forgotten that led Indian army to have regained the lost territory, but only after losing 527 soldiers. 🙏

Pointing fingers only at Generals is wrong. Yes there were failure points. There was failure in assesing intelligence for which commanders at all levels are responsible. So one can classify it as intelligence failure. Intelligence failure does not mean only fiels level intelligence agencies . So bad assessment is also a failure. However questions that need to be asked to generals is once they received inputs thier actions in scrutinising the information was poor. Another factor was the follow up on intelligence inputs was not done which was aggressive patrolling. So multiple levl failures were involved. There was failure from R&AW and IB who send crossborder assets or perhaps most cases their information is very vague which makes it less useful.

India like several countries cover up gross failures. Commendable that 2 brave persons are asking the inconvenient questions. Same cover up with the Balakot incident. The helicopter was shot down by friendly fire by panicking Indian anti air craft fire. The real evidence of Balakot infrastructure damaged have never been shared. How successful was our attack? At least 1 of our aircraft was shot and our pilot held captive.

The war was to be won...it was confidence of Musshraff that Army don't have weapons and aged offrs and soldiers will not be able to climb steep heights Kagil.
So the present Government arming with quality and quantity weapons. Secondly aged soldiers being replaced by Agniveers. Let us co-operate.
The only need to be discussed is Agniveer re-employment in CISF, Police, Home Guards etc.
