    Systematic only means message bits are not altered. It's not necessary to put together.
    Check definition given by Simon Haykin.
    [ m1 p1. p2 m2 p3 m3. m4 ]
    is also systematic.
    Any non-systematic linear code can be transformed into equivalent systematic form.

    How one may evaluate the properties and goodness of a code?

      Channel code refers to the class of signal transformations designed to improve communications performance enabling the transmitted signals to withstand the effects of various channel impairments, such as noise, interference, and fading. I suppose you can evaluate the performance of a code by measuring the BER (Bit Error Rate) of the received signal.
