Amazed your Grom lasted that long and took that abuse! That H style drive cup shaft on the diff’s is the number 1 weak point on these trucks. Mine exploded on 2nd pack taking way less abuse than you showed here. Horizon did warranty it for me and even sent me 2x spares. I love my Grom. Yea at first I thought the buddy mount system was kinda goofy too. But once you get used to it, it’s actually not bad at all and very easy to remove and remount. The steering is a bit squirrelly too I agree 😂 The only problem I’ve had is one of the plastic teeth on one of the rear driveshaft cups ( I think that’s what my local hobbytown said happened) stripped out. Looks like that’s what happened to yours too, Phil. Most likely from me doing doughnuts in the basement concrete floor 😬😂 So that’s my fault. But my hobbytown even warrantied it and fixed it. Those guys are awesome. Other than that, this thing is a perfect basement basher for me. My body is all scraped and scuffed up. But that gives it character 🤘🏼😂 Great video!
I blew my front differential, and I was about to fix it and discover the Typhon BLX 223s' 50 mph on 3s. Love it. I'm currently about to fix my first hobby grade rc car, which was this granite grom 4x4.
Would this be worth the money or would I be better off spending a little more for a team associated reflex 14mt? This would be a first rc car for myself and my daughters to mess around with.
It's a fun truck and indeed if you immediately floor it it won't go straight for some reason. But if you accelerate a bit more gradually it's surprisingly stable. It's pretty well balanced for jumping and I guess they build in weak points on purpose with RTR cars for upgradability. Very curious how the upgrade diffs hold up. Mine will get a brushless conversion soon so diffs will probably have to get upgraded pretty soon. 🙈
I have watched every single one of these rc advent calander videos religiously and I love the idea!! So new and unique, so tell you wife this was a great idea!!!❤❤❤
The advent calendar was a great idea . You've been working really hard . Many of us appreciate that .👏🏻 Great lil truck from Arrma . While a long time fan of micros and 1/18 scale . I think the new resurgence and proliferation of this size is partly because the larger scales have become more expensive . These are more affordable to mod as well and you don't need a huge place to run them . 👍🏼🎅🏻🎄
This is an excellent review and test. I bought one on a Black Friday sale at my local Hobbytown. I am glad to see Arrma trying to compete in this market. Also, the Gorgon is another attempt to get into a more reasonable price range. You gave it a real bash test and it might've shown a weakness that Arrma can correct.
I think this is very cool and only £20 more than a tracer. Gotta b worth it surely. I like it. Can easily upgrade it to brushless later on. I’m sure a lot of kids would b happy with this at Xmas.

I had the same steering trim issue with my Grom so i was going to change out the receiver and connect it to my spektrum Dx5C transmitter and then realized that it is a 2 in 1 esc. So... now its brushless with a gyro and it drives straight and goes 52 mph.😆
What a little beast! I hated the steering trim on my MJX hypergo 14 for the same reason. Plus I'd bump it. Now its running either my Dumbo or a Flysky gt2b just so I can get straight drives. Also, you are so lucky to have skateparks with nobody on them.

Hey Phil, been loving these Christmas calendar videos. Because of your videos, I do end up getting some of these cheap small scale cars and they are generally great cars. Some sometimes will end up having leaky shocks but all cars can and do. At the beginning of the video, you asked if this more expensive car holds up to the mjx i think it was? Here is my findings here is Arizona. To be frank, I guess you could call me a fanboy of Arrma and traxxas because my rustler 4x4, summit, and Infraction are my favorite cars I have but thats not what Im comparing. I also own the mini ERevo and the Grom and a few of the cheap minis you have featured. After giving them all a good bashing, a lot of these cheap cars perform really well and in the case of Rlarrlo, maybe better until something breaks. Its not easy to get parts for some of these cars and It took over a month to get an axle for the Rlarrlo desert buggy where when I break something on my ERevo, Im just a hop, skip and a jump away from my hobby shop. I always find myself unconsciously being more timid and careful with cheap cars but I run the ERevo and the Grom like Kevin Tolbot. To be fair, I run them harder then the Rustler 4x4 because they are so cheap to fix.😅 This rant was by no means disagreeing with you or throwing you any hate. Just my thoughts and findings to the question of what holds up to what and maybe its unfair because the VXL ERevo is $300 but still mini.
I bought this as soon as it was released. Great little truck. My only complaint is the body release mechanism. They could have done it a little better since it's so weird in regards to how easy Traxxas makes their body mount release system.
Took mine to the skate park, didn’t even get through a whole battery cycle before my rear differential went. Luckily my local hobby shop had a pair of all-metal upgraded ones. Bless them 🙏
Day 16 hits on a Saturday morning so I get to sleep in a bit. Nice got an Allen in😂 Love the hat fits right in I had an idea can we get the finger pointer you use to poke open a calendar day just the finger only poking through like on the videos 😂
A few of the TH-cam folk are talking about spares availablity of the Chinese stuff Vs Arrma but in my experience my MJX rarely broken for long. Mine has an FTX body and body posts from my local shop. The arms look like Tracer too. On the shelf at the model shop. The front uprights are special MJX because of the big, metal CVDs so they took two weeks to get here, but only because I wanted cheap because mine weren't fully dead yet. There's an English site for MJX bits, everything is a quid or two dearer obviously but it's in your hand in two days. Be it a diff or whatever. I can imagine the Arrma will be better for upgrades in the not too distant future. Especially where that diff' is concerned. Plus spares availablity can only get better can't it. Proper cool little truck that 🙂
Great little truck, but as you said, tough market for Arrma to drop into! My son has the HBX16889, and he's beaten the absolute snot out of it over the last 3 years, and all that's broken is the shell! It'll be interesting to see if the ever get to a V2?!
I’ve not bought the grom yet but overall look very similar platform to my mjx hyper go and I was wondering would parts fit. Do the diffs fit also by any chance? Or would that be wishful thinking?
@marshallday538 nice! I've since traded my granite grom, for 2 wrecked kaiju ext 6s trucks, I used parts from both to make 1 good kaiju, and traded that for my 8s xmaxx! So I basically bought an xmaxx for about $140!!!
Maybe you can help… I’m buying my daughter a rc car for Christmas . She is only 7. Can you recommend any to buy? It doesn’t have to be anywhere near top spec or enthusiast level but a good standard. Mostly used on grass . Thanks
Great video as always. Seems like a good truck but I feel that you get a better bang for your buck with thr Chinese offerings in this segment.
