KTM 890 Adventure R spoke tightening check- is it easy to do?

  • It may sound a bit dull, but we have these amazing pieces of spoked engineering rolling us over some pretty tough terrain. Let's look after them- here is my simple take on checking our vital supports.

    couldn't this method pull the rim out of alignment?

      Good question. My logic says not as it’s only correcting the dull sounding spokes which must have worked looser slightly, so it’s just making sure there is not slack in the spokes that would let the rim deform slightly. Happy to be challenged on that.

      It’s a riddle which I would love to understand the answer to. Since I manage to pull my front wheel entirely out of true, I developed a phobia for touching the spokes. On the one hand, you’d say that if the wheel is true, tightening all the spokes by the same amount will keep it true, while tightening only some will pull it off centre. On the other hand, as Alex said here, if a spoke is loose then it is not pulling, and therefore to tighten it will rectify a potential problem and not mess anything up. On the contrary, tightening spokes which are already tight, will make a mess… I don’t know which is which, frankly. (Though I think in my previous experience the problem was mainly that some of my spokes were seized, so they seemed torqued but weren’t. So, at the vey least make sure all spoke turn freely before starting.)
