Love seeing these kids building something cool. I think practically to win, a new product cant just be VSCode + AI, it has to be way way way better than VSCode for true adoption. It's similar to Zed. VSCode but with Rust is cool, unlikely to flat out win. Excited to see this progress!
I've been using Cursor for about 3-4 weeks now. It is incredible. I love that it is a fork of VSCode and when the Cursor setup was complete, it mimic'd my vsCode setup 100%. Amazing to get up and running with.
Think the answer will be in the product design and how seamless everything is integrated. It could very easily just be a more annoying version of VScode. I'm about to give this a try.
@@Xfacta12482 I hate AI in coding. I hate it! It takes all the joy out of coding. Instead of thinking through problems and solving them I am just reviewing and debugging ai code when Im in the editor. Obviously I still need to plan and architect the design up front, but a lot of my day is now just talk to ai. Check code and work through the odd bug. So yeah sadly Im pretty sure you will double your speed with this. You might (like me) wish it wasn't true though
I agree with you brother & i don’t. Not everyone can be as smart as you & need a little help right, but at the same time i hate cursor it’s so time consuming it if i want to click on something i have to type a question just to comment out or write a line of code
Im more interested if there is a way to allow cursor edit multuple files at once and create new ones, so that i dont have to go from file to file an apply changes myself. And create files myself. To work more like an agent. And i think a good improvement would be to have the ability to import some existing desingns(pre prepared prompts) and generate the entire page for example(if you are building web apps) and then you can edit the file and adjust it at your needs. Maybe it could show you overview of the entire project and recomentations for the next pages or screens based on the pattern you use and your coding style. There are many ideas how it can be improved.
@@olabassey3142 Oh man, you are a lifesaver, i completelly overlooked this feature. This is a lifesaver for me as i have a lot of deadlines to fill. This could save a massive ammounts of time for me. Thank you a lot.
will this force developers to work in a certain way? It looks like they are forcing their own paradigms and semantics on users. How configurable will it be?
Cursor is basically a superset of VS Code, so it doesn’t really force you to do anything. If you like you can ignore all the added functionality and just use it as you would VS Code. And if you want to use the added functionality, you can use it to whatever extent you like.
All these LLMs are not going work 100%. We need to standardize coding or have a standard to specify standards, then code generation can be automated accurately. E.g. Say you issue a command "book a hotel" the APIs should be standardized, so you can write a single piece of code which can work to book any hotel. Right now, there is too many variables with languages and APIs, making it hard to automate.
100% agree. Instead of working on this, the best silicon valley engineers work on crap like this which brute force stupid approach to fixing the problem
Wouldn't that take away the key differences in how businesses approach customer bases? Not that it couldn't be used in certain scenarios, don't get me wrong...
I am just not seeing the hype here. They're not running their own model. So any changes are going to only be marginally better and probably get "Sherlocked" pretty quickly.
They're hiring a UI/UX lead under the "Design Engineer" title, which is a giant red flag to me honestly. Those are NOT the same jobs yet people think they are, for some odd reason. They want someone who can A)conduct good user research B) design and C) also write good code. Aka, do 3 full-time jobs across 3 TOTALLY different disciples. There are so many people in UI who have absolutely no business being there, and its because people just hire front-end devs and expect them to be unicorns.
@@Xfacta12482 in this case it makes sense to me, as the product is literally a DevX kind of a tool. I will be looking into this. Thanks for letting me know brother!
The red haired boy on the left just wondered into the studio. He was a speculative contributor. That just means his dad is wealthy and can help with vc capital.
Once upon a time there was a really smart wolf. Instead of wasting time and effort on hunting itself, it hanged around humans and easily could survive. With time, it became humans best friend - A Dog. Initially it was a mutually beneficial relationship but later it became optional for human. I think, now its very likaly that humans are going to become best friend of AI and also it's pet!!
So, they made a piece of software to be bought buy Microsoft, but Microsoft already have the two part that form this piece of software. AI will do this sooner or later....
Lol compare this with doing the hard thing and develop programming languages with high level of abstraction and generality. No let's generate verbose source code but look I can press tab. Wishing them luck with it
Can they get some more silent red haired boys in this interview? I would love to see 8 or 9 just silently agreeing that playing around with vscode and prompting llm’s is the most profound thing ever
Lex Friedman is the biggest tool on earth. I have never been so embarrassed for a supposed engineer. The only thing that would make me respect him less is if he joined the cursor engineering team.
Best use of the term entropy all over this interview. I was really impressed with how the cursor team uses words. Even if they make no sense they sound so smart. (Hand jerking off)

Did all of your extensions work ok? I'm curious if AWS toolkit works in cursor.
Wireless streaming had no loading screen. That is part of the advantage (hand jerking off motion)
Lex is clearly having enjoying this one 😊

Dont wonder. I will tell. VScode fork + ai

Vscode + continueDev
Nice story!
Cursor is excellent but the AI feature is paid. It should be free with less features like codeium
They should get a couple more boys that speak with a staggered pace. They would make api calls to foundational models so well. Brilliant
imagine being that old and hating on young kids because they are succeeding, some people never mature
Why are they bring praised like they discovered something truly new?
cursor is just vs code supercharged with ai
