I agree with the other guy. From the leaves it seems it’s an oak tree but no matter and yeah toss of lime. It’s a weird white powder in bag format and actually cheap. I would also suggest to rally rake up the leaves and get rid of all that clutter and get the lawn aerated to assist in drainage. I’m doing this exact thing with my mom’s lawn. Same issue

Thankyou! You answered my question, this was the first video I watched about killing moss. I needed to know after using Moss Out which I did a couple days ago, if I need to rake it out. You said yes which was my feeling so I’ll do that and reseed shade grass! Thanks!!

By the leaves on the ground I would say that huge tree is an oak tree, not a maple. Big difference- oak trees are more acidic and make moss even worse. Lime-lime-and more lime. You can’t “overlime” in the northern areas.

Thank you! I needed some tips for helping my sweet aunt get rid of moss in her yard & garden bed, this video came at a perfect time.
Thank you again and God bless you!

whats the best time of year to do this? in NY

Moss out works best when moss is actively growing. In NY, I’d start late March or early April

Does the baking soda method work well. And do you have to run a power rake. Or thatcher?

IMO the baking soda methods works extremely well. After it turned yellow I was able to used a plastic leaf rake and it came right up. If you have a large area, then a dethatcher or power rake would do the trick.

Thanks for this. This is the first video that comes closest to what I'm dealing with (and it's a tree casting a shade). Do you have any picture of the lawn after reseeding? Did the moss come back? Thanks again!

    • @BackyardLawnandGarden
      @BackyardLawnandGarden  ปีที่แล้ว

I didn’t take pictures but the grass is still holding strong with no moss returning. The right seed mix can make a big difference and don’t be shy about overseeding in the fall. The thicker the lawn the lower chance of moss coming back. I’m glad this video helped. Good luck!

Pro tip: always rake away the carpet of fallen leaves _before_ applying anything to what lies below it. The actual "best method" to kill moss would include that. Skipping that step makes waste of whatever you bought, whether dry/pelletized or liquid solution.

Water that moss and have a moss lawn carpet so you don't have to mow.

I would never get rid of my moss, and ild hate to kill it.

Worse videos I have seen. \it looks like you just wanted to make a video. You didn't rake up the leaves, clear up the loose moss first or aerate the soil before hand. Most of that product went on fallen leaves. You also didn't protect your own skin in those shorts with the powder and dust covering you.

Moss means your soil isn't healthy plus it creates a breading ground for all kinds of horrible pest bugs.

Or just...keep the moss? Why strive for a boring, monocultural grass desert? The biodiversity moss provides is environmentally beneficial. Mix in some white/dutch clover, and you have a pollinator-attracting, healthy lawn that requires very little mowing/maintenance.

You think anybody that sought out this video is reading ur comment and saying hmm maybe I should keep that moss in my backyard that is taking over and causing me issues because of 🌈biodiversity🌈. Their lawn makes up 0.00000001% of the earth. Save that bull for golf courses and your twitter rants not random TH-cam tutorials.

For us the moss dies off in the heat of summer and you just have a patchy nasty looking lawn

I said the same thing for the first two summers of owning my home. First year I think I mowed 3 times. Last year 5 times. And now that my lawn is brown and dying I’m dethatching all the overgrown grass and leaves I mowed and left lay. And I regret it tremendously. Especially cause I opted for a manual dethatching rake. I’m going to opt for a clean HOA lawn but I’m still going to dedicate a section of the lawn away from the kids for the BEEs!
