The new Skoda Octavia takes a slightly different approach to most small hatchbacks. It offers much more space inside than the likes of the VW Golf,Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and, of course, other VW group family members like the Audi A3 and SEAT Leon. It's great value, too, with decent prices and the sort of standard equipment that's closer to a Kia Cee'd or Hyundai i30. Running costs should be low, too, thanks to a range of fuel-efficient engines with fuel-saving features such as automatic stop/start for the engine when the car comes to a halt. It all adds up to a great value, hugely spacious and high-quality package that easily won our 2013 CarBuyer Best Family Car award.
Mat: Size matters. You know it, I know it and Skoda knows it. In fact that was one of the main selling points of the original Octavia -- it was less money and yet bigger than the VW Golf on which it was based. And this new Octavia is even bigger than before.
You see that boot it isn't just the biggest in its class. It's bigger than cars from the class above. So yes while this car is based on the Volkswagen Golf it's boot is bigger than a Passat's. And if you are into practicality then you will like this. Every Octavia comes with this in the fuel filler cap -- it's an ice scraper with magnifying glass -- that should come in useful.
Anyway as well as having a massive boot the Octavia's wheelbase is 10 cm longer than before which means there's absolutely acres of legroom. Admittedly headroom isn't quite so special due to the sloping roof but it's easily enough for most adults. For instance I have more than enough and in case you are wondering I'm Mr Average at 5ft10 and a half -- I'm mentioning the half because we've already established size does matter.
So does build quality, and the Octavia doesn't disappoint in this department either. Everything is very well screwed together like you'd expect from a Volkswagen group product and all the controls are logically laid out and the instruments easy to read. Storage space is good too thanks to large door bins and a smattering of useful cubby spaces.
When it comes selecting your Skoda the entry level S car has almost all you really need like seven airbags, electronic anti-skid control, alloy wheels, height adjustment on the drivers seat and reach and rake for the steering wheel, air conditioning, Bluetooth for your mobile phone, iPod connectivity and touchscreen with digital radio.
There's a wide range of options too including a self-park system for those intimated by the Octavia's increased size. As well as bay parking it can also parallel park the car lengthways into a space. It controls the steering all you have to do is operate the brakes and throttle.
In terms of the rest of the driving experience the Octavia is generally very good. It's pretty quiet and relaxing at speed yet also steers well, has plenty of grip and doesn't roll about in the corners. I should point out some people may find the suspension a bit on the firm side though you only really notice it on a really badly surfaced road and anyway you could never call this car uncomfortable. Speaking of which, you can change the driving characteristics at the touch of this button. In comfort you have a softer throttle response and lighter steering whereas in sport the steering is heavier and the throttle response sharper. Don't go thinking this makes the Octavia exciting to drive though -- you'll have to wait for the hot hatch VRS model for that.
There is no mistaking the Octavia is a brilliant car, but I wouldn't be doing my job as a car reviewer if I didn't find some problems with it. Can you just give me a moment while I think of some? Okay right -- I think I have a couple -- see this arm rest it's a 150 pound option on all but the top of the range model surely everyone wants somewhere to rest their elbow. Also everyone likes to see what's going on behind them -- but rear visibility in the Octavia isn't great because the back window. It's just so far away.
To be honest though, all these issues are just minor niggles. They should not put you off the Octavia because it's a truly great car which not only does everything well but provides unbeatable space at this price. And for that reason we awarded it the CarBuyer Best Family Car Award for 2013.

But with fully loaded Octavia you get things from Merc C-class which you dont have on entry level Insignia, not even mid range Insignia, some not even on top spec one. For example you have to pay special extra on top spec to get Bi-Xenon headlamps. Which costs about 2 time more than Octavia.

An old company like skoda doesn't give a shit what americans think about thw horse power and the logo.skoda sells more cars every year and they have no intention to expand in the united states. 180 hp in Europe is considered as enough for family cars and octavia is exactly that. Fuel price in europe is approximately €1.60/ litre so the future in europe demands smaller engines like the tsi and the ecoboost.turbocharged to be fast where necessary but aslo affordable

Yooka: Hi, I’m Yooka, and your video review made lots of sense. I’m getting this tomorrow at midday, Laylee is coming with me, and I think I might go for either the optional nets, or the optional armrest. I’m not kidding... By the way, I’m actually getting the used 2014 estate model.
    A day later...
Yooka: Okay, what are my thoughts? Well, the boot is MASSIVE!, AKA the biggest in class, I also went for the optional nets to stop my things rolling about all over the place. And before you ask, yes, I got the more practical still estate version from 2014, and, in the rear, I have lots of room, so six footers should be just about okay in the rear. As for safety, and the driving experience, etc., well, I got several safety systems, and loads of parking aids, and overall, the driving experience was very sharp. The only problem was at the rear, because the seats didn’t fold completely flat. In fact, they almost did, but they didn’t. Overall, I’m very happy with this Skoda, because it’s a replacement for my Ford Focus Estate from 2012. And ultimately, I think it’s very practical, especially with the biggest boot in its class. Hope this helped. Goodbye.
    Another day later...
(insert ear rape version of "Skoda. Simply Clever." jingle here)
    7 months later…
    Bluey: I don’t actually drive.

This is the problem with german cars, if you want to make them interesting you have to spend almost as much as the value of the car itself in extra equipment!!

    • @MrMrbarbosa
      @MrMrbarbosa 7 ปีที่แล้ว

First, having driving license for two years doens't make my opinion invalid. No one is teaching lessons, im stating facts, it's a fact that a base model Civic is way more interesting than a base Golf because of the features. You get more "bang for the bucket" it's a fact. VW only sell so good because of the status the VW brand as reached in some countries. Both VW and Skoda are very good cars but no where near as reliable and base equiped as a Honda or a Toyota, this is also a fact. I love the new Superb and the new Passat and the famous DSG gearbox but most of the buyers have a limited budget, considering that, i think you get more for less woth Honda or Toyota, even the french offer more standard features. So, in conclusion, MBA's and Business school's are an invanlid argument against a fact, wich by it self, you can't deny.

Actually it is, Skodas are always based on VWs or Audis sometimes the current models, often previous gen. cars. The Octavia for instance is based on the Passat, the Yeti is based on the Tiguan the citigo on the up etc.
And for instance the Superb is based on the previous A5 at least it alsways has been don't know if it's the same now.
Skodas are "just" stipped down cheap VWs/Audis.
VWs are the base for "avarge" costumers, Audi for wealthyer ones.
And Skoda and Seat are the cheaper line.

    1.4 tsi 122 bhp and 200nm torque
1.4 tsi twincharged 160bhp and 250nm torque (I doubt this will be an option as it is an expensive engine)

Doesn't matter. Not all cars they review are completely new. The Laguna 3 has had a facelift recently and they haven't reviewed it. In fact, they haven't reviewed any Laguna at all.

Are u sure? Rapid shares platform with Polo sedan (or saloon) which is not in sale in the UK. But Octavia shares the platform with Jetta, Golf and Seat Toledo.

have one with the 1.8 tsi 180hp manual and it's an excellent car, with 17 inch wheels, a perfect balance of space, confort, sportiness-ish, great engine, etc, etc, etc.

That is nice, but there is nothing true about what you said. It might be a little bit true about the SEATs, but it does not apply to Skodas.

Both the Octavia and Superb are great cars but cars like the Insignia are in a class of its own and only Ford and VW owners wouldn't appreciated that - if you dig a little you will see it is the most awarded car considering reliability and Opel has less running costs than any of its competitors, it also doesn't have exterior paint in the interior (like the top of the line Octavia), the highway performance is also on great level and it doesn't feel vague with soft steering and suspension, etc....

Great car but fully loaded it costs as much as a very well equipped Insignia and I don't think the Octavia is even close to Insignia's style, comfort and presence. I like Skoda-s but only if they are cheap :)

A/C of skoda cars are not durable. I have two skoda cars, in petrol 1.8l, I changed the AC once, and 1.9 tdipd, I had to change twice. The company refuses to take responsibility. I paid about $2000 all three times. They give guarantee of two years - my AC stopped functioning just a week before, but I reported it after 4 days and they considered it out of warantee. Cars run good but painful to repair. It was not only my car, but there were over 20 cars waiting for AC repair. So beware.

You don't get any N/A engine anymore. That's a drawback for me. Besides 1.2 is weak, 1,4 has many problems, 1,6 Diesel is too new so I don't know about how it's dependable. All what I might takie into consideration are 1,8TSI and 2.0TDI. Or wait for a RS model ]:)

Has it really because in the UK all I see now is diesel cars on the road? I love the TFSi engine and I'm surprised more people don't opt for it. I think people buy diesels because in the UK the VED for diesels is lower due to CO2 so people think they're getting a good deal but when they shell out the extra £2000 or so for the diesel, the government then instantly rake in the extra VAT at 20%. Just another way for the governement to raise revenue from VAT. I prefer petrols. Where are you from?

  • @W00DYST0CK
    @W00DYST0CK 11 ปีที่แล้ว

Too bad for the live rear axle as well. The Golf has it too with one or two least powerful engines, whereas Octavia has it through through entire range (including 2.0 TDI!) except for 1.8 TSI petrol and all-wheel drive models which has the only appropriate multi-link. In the Czech republic it is much criticised, because the previous model was all multi-link. Well, once again the Germans showed the Czechs who´s the boss :( The same goes for Seat Leon as well...

Beware, the company will not own its technical problem. I changed AC twice in my Laura, Paid 80000/- twice. Second time, I was late by 4 days of fininshing my warranty.
Took 7 days as there were 30 other cars waiting for AC replacements!!!!!
