I just love the standards Martin plays in this series. I especially love when he "Takes risks (Someday My Prince Will Come - Martin Taylor [SS001])" and then improvises freely. Every performance seems like a risk. Hes so good at making mistakes, that non musicians and even some musicians wont recognise when he does make a mistake. Well done Martin, certainly one of my favourite "Keyboard players" on guitar.

My father told me pretty much the exact same story about Freddie Green and his guitar. When he was on the Sinatra band in the '80s they were in Vegas the same time as Basie and a bunch of the guys stopped in to watch the Basie band rehearse. My dad was thrilled to get a chance to meet Freddie and asked to have a look at his guitar. He told me the action was an inch above the neck and held his thumb and index finger apart exactly like Martin. He said the guitar was "unplayable"! It was my dad who turned me on to Martin. He was a big fan. Me too!

The way you pull the time back and forth with those triplet patterns is insane, absolutely crazy.

I saw you play an amazing solo show at Borders Books in Glasgow in the late nineties. I was lucky enough to be sitting just six feet away and I thought it doesn’t get any better than this. But you know what? You just keep getting better and better. What an inspiration. At the end of your show you spent a long time chatting to everyone and answering questions. You’re such a great musician but you’re also an amazing person. 👍

Borders was my fav around early 2000s. Bookstore smell and listening to new music was great.

I love these studio sessions and Standard series, currently revisiting them all in a row right now. Interesting to here that you're self taught and never had formal lessons, then for you to talk about your musical progress over the years. Although I hate this word, very inspirational for a young self taught guitarist back in the UK like myself. I never really had much of a musical upbringing until I discovered the big world of jazz and beyond in my late teens. Folk and Country fingerstyle I mostly play though I'm keen to learn some jazz tunes. I cant help but wonder what sound I'll develop once they become more familiar, considering the styale i play now. Are you aware of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn's take on Goodbye Pork Pie Hat? It's a little twangy and I probabay prefer a cleaner guitar sound. It would be awesome to here your take of the Mingus classic in one of these studio sessions!
